Whatever water is being used at Saatliches Hofbräu is some of the softest water I've ever encountered in beer. The mouthfeel of this Hefe Weiße is world-class, to say the least. Is it the best I've ever had? Sort of, and I would say this is in the top tier of the style, at least for my own personal experince. Pronounced cilantro seed, sweet banana-like yeast, and a pink candied bubble gum flavor that is naturally cloudly makes for a delightful summer beer.

a: slightly hazy dark mahogany and cherry. a touch of dark ruby red and light purple. 3 finger solid tan head

s: wheat, sweet caramel, and a touch of chocolate. dark plums, figs, and raisins behind that. big bready note, and candied strawberries. a touch of lemongrass and sticky toffee at the end

t: not quite as vibrant as the nose. toffee, sticky dough, figs, raisins, and a substantial hit of wheat. fig and plum behind that with a faint hint of chocolate. nice grassy presence and a very faint herbal bitterness. finish is sweet

m: lighter side of medium with high carbonatoin

o: a pretty fair example of the style. i've had some that were more rich in flavor, and featured a little more wheat than this one. easy to drink, and nothing off in here though.

Picked this up by accident not realizing it was a Dunkel. It was very pretty good but I found I dont like the dark HefeWeisse as much as LIke the regular.

Big head on the beer but I poured it wrong also. Smells a bit strong. Nothing floating around in it so that's a good sign. Tastes like rusty water to me. I'm not too fond of that stuff, a little strong. That would be the first and last time I'd want to drink this stuff. Starting to irritate my stomach. Tastes like it came out of the sewer. People been drinking this since 1589? People must have been drunk already to start drinking this shit.

Not much to say except that this is a damn near textbook dunkel weizen.

Brown and hazy with a big, creamy, off-white head. Great fruity aroma with some spices mixed in. Think baked banana bread... More banana with some clove in the flavor. Very soft with medium-full body. Good carbonation. Not as quenching as its lighter hefeweizen counterpart, but it's tasty in its own right. Nothing bad to say about this beer, it's exactly what you think it will be and that's not a bad thing.

Murky brown color with beige head. Aroma has toasted malts, grains, bread crust and some banana esters. Taste follows with the banana notes, dough, light caramel and toasted malts. Medium body with medium plus carbonation. There is a light cardboard and dirty rag off-taste but it's very subtle.

From the tap at the Panama Beach Hofbräuhaus, it was poured into a weizenbier glass and is a hazy brownish amber with a nice light tan or maybe off-white head. The nose is classic dunkelweizen, with a bready scent and some banana. Easy drinking taste that makes you want more... Yum!

Pours a cloudy copper brown color with a medium beige head. Aroma off wheat,banana,bread,caramel and cloves. The flavour is sweet an fruity with bready malty notes and spicy notes from the cloves. The finish has a slight bitterness but the aftertaste is weak and the flavour is a little to watery I think. The mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing. Medium body with a high carbonation.
I think this is a mediocre dunkelweizen compared to a lot off other german examples. Is good and easy drinking but when it comes to the flavour is not very exiting.

The beers produced by Hofbrua tend to have much fame but not the best beers of Bavaria. I usually disappointing. This, without being fantastic, but I found the mediocre, like many of this producer. Style is probably one of my favorite German. Repeat.

Had this on tap at an Austrian restaurant in Kansas City, on draft.

Pours a dark brown, with a small off white head.

Faint clove and overly ripe banana, however, not a lot of nose to this beer.

Certainly more clove and less banana than other Bavarian dunkelweizens I've had. A little more of the base malts coming through, slightly sweet.

From Hipercor. In Bavaria's wheat glass. Perfect foam. Smooth and long-lasting. Great aroma and good taste. This brewery becomes an unexpected favourite of mine. Plenty of nasty sediments at the bottom spoil an otherwise great brew

L) Hazy cola brown, suspended yeast, puffy head dissipates quickly
S) Banana, sweet citrus fruit, mild spice and mild esters. Classic German Heffe
T) Sweet caramel, banana & clove. Delicious
F) Surprisingly light and smooth. Ample carbonation with bottle conditioned fizz
O) Outstanding example of the dunkel weisse category. Unfortunately hard to find but worth the effort

The aroma is largely sweet with vanilla and honey along with some wax, clove, and a hint of cocoa. The body is deep copper and fairly hazy with a foamy, off-white head that lasts. The flavor is dominated by spicy clove and stalky bitterness along with light honey, subdued bready/grainy malt, some yeasty sourness, and a light waxy/grainy finish. The carbonation is intense and prickly.

Very crisp and satisfying but with a rather straightforward flavor for the style. It's not at all bad, but it could benefit from greater sweetness, a more notable malt presence, and softer carbonation.

Had this with some bratwursts and sauerkraut at Hofbrau Munchen in Panama City, FL, at Pier Park. Paired very well with my meal, and as far as I know you can only get this beer at their restaurants/gastropubs. Not the best dunkelweizen I've had, but solid nontheless, and a great accompaniment to German cuisine.

Pours a fairly deep brown, fairly clear, wIth minimal cream bread that lingers as a thin layer of foam. Aroma is banana, clove, toasted, bready malt, light caramel, and a hint of clove.

Flavor reveals more lightly sweet caramel upfront, with a bready, toasted, dry, and lightly bitter/earthy finish. There's a touch of citrus for complexity, and a lightly banana at the close.

A touch more malt body and lose the light metallic character, and this would be fantastic.

The colour os very dark brown, almost black (80 EBC), the liquid is cloudy. The firm four finger head is compact and beige; it sinks slowly leaving lots of lacing.

The smell is a bit roasted and semi-sweet. Low levels of alcohol and bitterness. Christmas spices and tart, dried fruits.

The taste is roasted and a bit similar to a porter in the malt profile. Light bitterness. Some dried fruits and exotic spices, hints of soap. Light to medium body. The aftertaste adds a crispy clean bitterness ans some green fruits. The sweet finish is quite light and short with some spicy flavours.

The carbonation is strong with lots of small long-lived bubbles. The liquid is semi-smooth.

A surprisingly light dunkelwiezen. Much more gulpable than the pale one.

Enjoyed 12 oz. at Beer Revolution. A reddish murky brown, about as dark as some North American brewed weizenbocks, with an unassuming tan head. Smells like the expected banana and clove yeast flavors, with the banana predominating, along with smooth caramel and a tinge of citrus rind. This was just what the doctor ordered after recently trying some fairly sour dunkelweizens that underachieved in the malt department, a nice rich malt complexity, almost smoky, with subtle dried apricot notes ... Potent yet refined. Very banana-forward, with clove present as well but relatively downplayed. I do not taste much in the way of citrus but there is an earthy root cellar spice in the finish. Not super sticky or thick but does have some chew, and pleasingly enough the spice builds on the palate as you go, drying things out and providing a nice contrast to the rich malty and fruity beginning and middle. This is how this style ought to be executed ... Says the non-German amateur beer geek. If nothing else I try to pay close attention, and this was well worth the mental effort.

Drink by 9-17-14. 500ml bottle. Dad picked this up in Italy.

Appearance: Diarrhea water never looked so good. Extremely hazy orange/brown color depending on where the light comes through. Small very light tan colored head goes away pretty quickly leaving about 1/16th of an inch of a thin head on top. No lacing that I can see.

Smell: The malts bog down that normally bright dunkelweizen aroma. Caramel malt with a little bit of that banana character typical in the style. Not a strong aroma, but quite nice regardless.

Taste/feel: That's the ticket! This is really nice. The banana character is there plenty, but the caramel malts keep it under control. The after taste is a biscuity flavor with the banana and it's really nice. There's also a very slight tanginess on the end that calls for you to take another sip. The mouthfeel is outstanding with about a medium body with a mid-level amount of carbonation.

I was thinking about going with 3.75s for the taste, feel, and overall rating, but this is an excellent beer for *me* if I want something of the style. Silky feel on it, pleasant lingering slightly spicy and tangy banana biscuit aftertaste... this is some good stuff. My first from Hofbrau, and it won't be my last.

500ml bottle poured into Weisse glass 22/4/13

A hazy reddish brown but has more clarity then I expected, two fingers of tan foam sits around for a few sips before falling to a thin film that leaves a single thick ring of lace

S a little bruised banana and brown sugar with a little chocolate covered raisin and sweet dark bread, earthy notes I can't place with a hint of molasses

T a little spice to go with what I smell but quite similar, solid example of the style but not mind-blowing, a little sweet but it works

M silky at first with the bubbles stopping short of creamy but they play their part, not thin but could use a little more body but it's a minor complaint

O pretty smooth easy drinking beer, not the best example of the style but nothing to be ashamed of

500ml bottle. Nice to see more choices than the long-standing (yet of course still drinkable) usual offerings from this most hallowed of beer-producing regions.

This beer pours a hazy, dark chestnut brown-tinged amber colour, with two fingers of fizzy, very tightly foamy off-white head, which leaves a low shoreline of ebbing lace around the glass as it evenly slides away.

It smells of lightly roasted grainy caramelized wheat malt, banana bread, mild cloves, fruity apple and pear, and a slight earthy mustiness. The taste is more bready, wheaty malt, with just a wisp of toasted schwarz character, musty ripe bananas, softly yielding yeast, mildly sweet coriander spice, lilting chewing gum, and faint earthy, weedy hops.

The bubbles are a tad peppy, and somewhat frothy, and fade at an agreeable rate, the body a decent medium weight, and really quite smooth, in an unsurprisingly fruity manner. It finishes off-dry, the fruit and slight char continuing to play well together.

An adequately enjoyable dunkelweizen, the lack of expected roasted notes, while a concern at first, fades from worry rather quickly, leaving us with a nice fruity quaff, suitable for summertime excursions, and early spring snow days alike.

I had this beer on-tap originally at the Hofbrauhaus in Germany and then again at the Hofbrauhaus in Las Vegas. You simply cannot find this beer at any store (in the US) outside of going to one of the Hofbrauhaus restaurants.

Simply put, this is the best beer I have ever had. I sure some of it had to do with how fresh it was in Munich, but everything about this beer is nearly perfect.

The color is a deep brown and it almost looks like it would be extremely heavy like a dopplebock. However, when it hits your lips, you can almost not believe how light and flavorful it is, and it is so smooth on the palate.

I have bought many a dunkle weiss in the states and have been unable to find anything close to how good this beer is. If you ever come across this beer, do yourself a favor and order a full liter.

A:
Mahogany brown color, thick light tan head with good retention, there are particles of yeast floating all around from the push of medium to high carbonation, some patches of lace clinging. The carbonation produces the silky foam on top upon swirl.

S:
The aroma discloses banana to big banana bread, fruity, bready malt to dark bread and some clove spiciness.

T:
Bubblegum, fruity and banana ester snap first then supporting by some malty sweet and some zesty. Phenolic spice yet clove reveal from the middle to the end. Bitterness from hop is at the very end and leaves with just a wee note.

M:
Rather light to medium body with lively good crisp and carbonation generating fine refreshing touch through the palate, smooth and dry finish.

O:
The quaffable quality is so good, worthy Dunkelweizen.
