Love this drinkable, balanced, abd tasty doppelbock. Not too heavy. Quite enjoyable.

The color is a deep chestnut brown. The smell is bready and sour. The taste is balanced, with a round sweet yet adequately hopped and/or roasted? Sessionable. Relatively light mouthfeel and doesn't show it's 7.5% alcohol.

On tap at Lionheart Pub and Brewery in Albany, NY.

This one pours a dark brown color, with a small head, and a little bit of lacing.

This smells like raisiny dark fruit, breadiness, chestnuts, and caramel.

This is a pretty standard and textbook take on the style, with a big fruity and caramel sweetness, a bit of chocolate, and a touch of bready bitterness.

This drinks "small" compared to other dopplebocks I've had, as it's smooth and not really all that heavy. There's a very good drinkability.

I unfortunately don't see enough American breweries making dopplebocks, so I gotta go with stuff like this when I see it, to scratch that itch.

a sweet and sturdy bock here, i had not seen this one before i found it on tap at prost in downtown boise, a wonderful spot for draft german beer! you just dont see enough doppelbock around anymore, and i was stoked to see this on their impressive menu. deep chestnut colored, pushing brown but with some deep auburn edges and a climbing khaki head. it smells like brown sugar, a little soy sauce, proofing dough for dark rustic bread, raisins, and some appreciable alcohol too, not overly intense, not too big, but its a constant here. nutty in the taste at first and an umami element before the breadiness sets in, brown sugar and maple and curiously, a little bit of an acidic tinge there in the center, almond, toffee, burnt butter. its smooth in feel even with the little bit of interruption from the acidity, nicely carbonated for a style thats usually a little still, and just full of flavor. the booze stays warm but never gets hot, and while this might not be a beer to drink several liters of, a glass of it is real pleasing, especially to cap off a solid session. really was vibing with this one last night!

Had on tap. Medium brown mostly clear body, thin mushroom head. Lots of malt, toasted toffee, flowers, slight resin, and dirt. Taste adds in some roasted nuts, but generally is light on the palate for the style. Feel is somewhat thin, smooth, and booze peaks out a little. Solid

2016 hofbrau winter spezial Delicator doppelbock clocks in with an 8.4% abv. This beer like most from Hofbrau is a good value in my area. Easy drinking winter doppelbock with subdued looks and smell. Nice taste and feel. Recommended winter seasonal.

On tap. Poured a clear, reddish amber color with a small, tan head of foam. It smelled of caramel, toffee and floral notes. Roasted malt taste with toffee and a subtle bitter bite.

This is an interesting Doppelbock because it is fully loaded with alcohol, yet very light and the ABV is not detectable, making this one quite "dangerous". It pours a soft, pillowy head, with a dark body, but not completely opaque. Scents of hazelnuts and fruity plums shine through. Tastes of slightly sour cherries, mildly, followed by a distinct malty, dark chocolately backdrop. Nothing offensive. Washes with a slight cocoa flavor, but subtle and nice dry finish.

Pours the color of chestnuts with a good portion of off-white, leaning tan, head. Retention isn't so great, dissipating to a broken film within a minute.
Smell is intensely malty with light notes of nuts, green apple, bread and wood.
Taste is exactly what you would expect from the nose and well-balanced, as well. Malt, nuts, wood, light bread and apple/pear notes.
Medium bodied though finishing a bit more. Drying finish with a boozy aspect that warms nicely. Another solid brew from Hofbrau.

Poured from a green 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a dark brown color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is loaded with bready malts. Taste is dark breads, malty, light sugars, alcohol is well hidden. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is a good quality beer.

Pours dark brown with a fluffy white head. Lacing sticks.

The smell is of grain, toffee, fig, buiscuit with a subtle noble hop touch.

The taste is of candied grain toffee and fig. A noble hop touch in the finish balances most of the sweetness.
Slight alcohol shows in a warming way.

It has a chewy medium to full body.

Very smooth. Sweet but balanced. Easy to drink, esp. for abv. A very nice doppelbock.

On tap at Philadelphia's Brauhaus Schlitz. Nice dried fruit soaked in brandy taste. Apricot and cherry. Astringent aftertaste makes it less smooth but interesting. Light feel doesn't go well with the heavy taste, but not regretting getting this. Lots of flavor.

Pretty good find at Carnivores a $2.50 pick is easy for high ABV into a pint glass.

A - Great carbonation for a DB a 1/2 inch of frothy head that fades out pretty quickly. Beer color is a fairly dark shade of chestnut brown.
S - Grainy, hoppy, and sweet this one sports brown sugar and candied figs. I sip.
T - Smooth body starts off bready and turns to grain with a bit of sourdough rounded to brown sugar and a yeasty finish. Sweet and smooth.
M - Medium bodied and chewy its easy to sip with a good malty backbone.

Overall its quite a good beer that I am enjoying but I doubt I will find another. Will pick it up next season if it's around.

I'm rating the 2015-2016 HB Winter Spezial here because the bottle states it's the Munich Specialty / DELICATOR and I also learned that it's the same beer from the HB importer. The bottle also reports 8.5 ABV, but maybe this first-time bottle export is higher?

Took forever to find this anywhere in my area and I had to travel to the edge of my county for a retailer, but I blame that on local distributors, not HB or their importer.

L -- Pours a clear, deep chestnut color with a firm, dense, off-white head that holds up well.

S -- Aroma of dark bread crusts, mild dark fruits, light cocoa character and mellow peppery alcohol. A very fresh import.

T -- Flavors of sweet, dark bread crusts up front, a good balance of dark fruits and light milk chocolate in the middle, peppery alcohol to mild hop bitterness in the finish.

F -- The mouthfeel is soft and smooth with a medium-robust body that comes across rather chewy.

O -- A very fresh Doppelbock with just the right characters anyone should look for from the style. Liquid bread with a hint of the dangerous alcohol lurking within. The Southern Bavarian Winter Warmer at its best.

This is the 2015 Winter Spezial for 2015, with an abv of 8.4%. There is very little info online about this year's version, so I had the honor of adding this to the Hofbrau list.

Look: The color is a deep reddish brown like chestnut with a crystal clear body. The head is light tan that reduces to a ring and leaves spotty lacing.

Smell: Buscuity, toasty, and sweet malts with earthy and herbal noble hop character. The yeast is generally neutral but has mild notes of clove.

Taste: Mildly sweet and toffee-like with hints of caramel and fig. Vinous, aged wine-like character and dark fruits reminiscent of a Pint Noir. A flourish of warm alcohol is detectable at the end of each sip.

Feel: Medium body, chewy, somewhat resinous, a little bit moist at the end but with a surprisingly crisp finish. The carbonation blossoms if you let it but there is no scrub due to the viscous weight this beer possesses.

Overall: Lots of intensity and subtlety at the same time. Dangerously drinkable for close to 9%! This is the strongest Hofbrau I've ever had and definitely the best Winter beer too.

Pours a medium copper color with good clarity and a solid foam head. The aroma has caramel, toffee and more caramel. Very sweet to the nose. Sweetness follows through with the taste, only a slight touch of herbal, noble hop is noticed. Alcohol is noticeable in the taste, other tasters have noted it being slightly hot. Still, for the Doppelbock style this falls right in line. A bit too sweet for my tastes, but solid for what it is.
