Cork blew off the top when opening. Carbonation is intense, so be aware and chill for 24+ hrs beforehand! Smell is subdued, but has a funky, and slightly wet washcloth character. Mouthfeel is thin (likely due to the high carbonation and high attenuation). Taste is very oaky and green peppery, with a very small amount of burnt plastic flavor. Some mineral and lemon barnyard funk I'd expect in a gueuze, but overall, it doesn't have the classic funk I was expecting. Pretty good, but I wouldn't seek it out. Tasted best at 53 °F, in my opinion.

Boon Oude Geuze was my very first gueuze (aka blended lambic) beer, which I first consumed around 5-6 years ago at this point and which definitely turned me on to the world of Belgian lambic in general. The tart, funky rustic yeast, green apple skin flavor and prominently-dry finish all helped get me acclimated to oak-aged sour ale in a very immediate way. Though I had some other sours before I had it, Boon's gueuze gave me the proper framework with which to conceptualize and otherwise criticize blended sour ale, and it deserves all of the accolades it's been given throughout the years. It is truly an important beer in my (and many others') drinking history!

Fast forward to last week when I finally bought a bottle of Black Label Boon OG for a bottle share as kind of a last-minute addition to what I was already bringing. It clearly didn't get consumed, as I have it with me right now, but I'm perversely satisfied with the fact that I didn't have to share this gem with anyone else. No... this entire bottle will likely be consumed by yours truly over the course of a few hours (maybe with a little help from my roommate and buddy Chris, I suppose...). Let the games begin!

During the removal of the cage on this bottle, I was definitely worried about the possibility of the cork flying off, so I opened this one over the sink. With almost no effort, the cork rocketed off and entered whatever dimension forcefully-popped corkwood stoppers enter when they're shunted off with such intense force as this one was. It's probably in my living room somewhere. Or embedded in the ceiling, whatever.

Anyway, I was surprised it didn't gush even a little bit. Contents are definitely under pressure, but the pour was really, surprisingly demure when all was said and done. Sure, a normal soft-pour yielded about 4-5 fingers of nearly-unwavering head, but it did eventually sink down to about two fingers. And there it still sits, atop a golden orange/yellow beer with a distinct, characteristic haze to it. Consistent effervescence driving to the top even after 10-15 minutes post-decanting. Great pour... love the surprising amount of restraint here. It goes to show that the brewers and blenders involved have incredible control regarding their product. Magnificent!

Nose has a soft and inviting complexion... white/Muscat grape, farmhouse-y wild Brett funk, green apple, bloomy cheese rind, white grapefruit, honeydew melon and some warm toasty oak/vanillin notes. Some crackery malt seems to be present underneath everything else. It's pretty similar, from the initial scent, to the original Boon OG blend I recall, but it has a little more citrus character.

On the palate, this presents with a strong citrus presence, combined with some stunning tropical-like fruit (pineapple/guava) and melon-like, complex flavors that remind me of fleshier fruit varieties. Intense hit of Brett funk bringing up strong horse blanket, hay and rustic overtones that wash over the tongue until the finish brings out warm vanilla, more melon, lemon and green apple tartness.

Absolutely bone-dry finish on this one, as is entirely expected. Bubbly, champagne-like carbonation. There is, however, a slight respite towards the mid-point of each sip, before this dries out my palate entirely... I almost feel like the oak and vanilla notes take over here, until I get more lemon meringue and tart apple skin.

I did a bit of research on the feel of this one, since the back of the label mentions the fact that OG BL is "the driest geuze we make" and that "combining a full-bodied taste with a very high fermentation degree is a big challenge." Though that is quite the claim, I would certainly be inclined to agree, and would say that the blend here is absolutely masterful if this is taken into account. Since process is incredibly important to lambic blending, I would say if you don't take this aspect into account when judging the beer, you're inevitably going to misrepresent it. Anyway, this idea was apparently inspired by a collaboration with Mikkeller a few years back. I guess they wanted to make an insanely dry gueuze, and the Mikkeller collab ended up being called "Bone Dry," and it used the same lambics from the same foeders as this blend ended up using, interestingly enough. This version contains less of the older lambic than the Mikkeller collaboration, but is still considered insanely dry, and I'd agree. Each sip nearly forces me to the next, in an unending search for that which will finally slake my thirst. I know this is an improbable — nay, impossible! — task, but I will try anyway... for lambic is good. That's all I have to say about that.

Sampled at a tasting. Pale golden pour with a huge white head. Lambic funk smell and some sodium bicarbonate. Tastes sour, funky, like vinegar and again sodium bicarbonate. Dry, with a sour/bitter aftertaste.

A- poured out of the bottle into chilled teku glasses after 7 months of cellaring. The head erupted from the glass and stayed for quite some time being continuously replenished from streams of carbonated bubbles eminating from all around the bottom of the glass. The liquid portion (about 1/3 the of glass after the first pour) was honey coloured and translucent.
S- Citrus notes with a white wine backbone, hints of leather from the brett, and a touch of oaky aromas.
T-Complex, and tart. Begins like an Oaked chardonnay, subtle honey notes in the middle with contradicting lemon zest flavours mixed throughout, finishes dry with ever so slight bitterness.
M- smooth and light, with a lively carbonation (in part due to a long stint in the cellar).
O- Fantastic lambic! Perfectly balanced and exceptionally dry, clean finish that kept me coming back for more until it was gone. I would consider aging this bad boy for 1-1.5 years next time.

Hazy golden color with white head. Aroma has intense, puckering funk, lemon zest and barnyard notes. Taste starts sour, lemony, dry and zesty. Body is light and very effervescent. Really good gueuze, dry but not overly funky, quite easy to drink.

750 mL bottle. Cork flies off and it gushes immediately. Big white head that lasts forever. Murky orange body. Smells very musty. Dry hay. Oak. Light acidity. Tastes of lemon sourness. Very yeasty. Strong oak. A little bit astringent and grassy in the back end. Medium body. High carbonation. Really nice. Surprisingly good from Boon.

This was a nice one to try, the leftovers from Boon's Mikkeller collaboration Bone Dry, blended in different proportions.
Love the throwback to the old Boon stencil label.

Slightly hazy saturated orange, explosive champagne streamers of rapid carbonation. Instant billowing head of foam, even a gentle swirl rekindles the head immediately. Lasting surface coverage for the first couple sips, some minor lacing.

Aroma is citric and grapefruity with an underlying sourdough presence, mild oak in the background.

Taste is tart and super dry, crisp and effervescent like champagne. Grapefruit pith and peels, oak hints.
Extremely carbonated, the cork blew off at the lightest touch. A little more fruity and obviously more dry than the standard issue Boon Oude Geuze, though not as funky as Mariage Parfait.

A masterfully blended classic Gueuze from Frank Boon.

This one pours clear light orange, with huge fluffy head, and lots of lacing. There's lots of little bubbles in this- it looks quite carbonated.

This smells like dry grassy funk, lemon rind, green apple, and chalk.

This is exceedingly carbonated, really champagne like, which makes it one of the lesser Boon gueuzes I've had. This isn't to say it's bad- it's not, at all. It's quite tasty, with a great dryness to it- prickly and rindy, with a sharp grassy funk, and just a hint of old barnyard/basement funk. There's some lemon, pear, and apple skins, too. It's not the bold mouthgasm that the absolute best lambics are. However, it's much easier to get than Cantillon, Tilquin, or 3F, and it's still quite tasty anyway.

This is light bodied, with a very prickly mouthfeel, and a very high level of carbonation.

This is a fun beer for sure- it's not Boon's best, though.

Poured into a Wicked Weed snifter. Back label says 26/03/2035.

A- Pours a medium amber color with a full three fingers' worth of off-white head from a soft pour that fizzes away to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a full sheet of sheer surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves large clots behind.

S- Lovely Gueuze funk exhibits notes of lemon, pear and apple all with some sharp lactic acid and wild yeast essence.

T- Excellent balance between tartness and funk with a big spritzy burst of carbonation. More lemon notes plus some oak and barnyard quality. Somewhat leathery finish. Quite dry too.

M- Very tight on the palate with moderate pucker, medium-high carbonation and a lightish body.

O- A Gueuze as it's meant to be. Very straightforward but with all the complexity you expect from the style.

A: Orange-gold with some honey - hazy - the cork more or less exploded out of the bottle and the carbonation matches - gigantic fluffy white head - gradually fades to a white head - leaves massive blotches of lacing

S: Sour and woody, simply put - nice amount of sour, with some musty lactic notes, but mostly a solid acidity - some lemon - touches of grass, hay, and earth - some light fruits, mostly green apple - but the real highlight here is the oak - super chewy wood - reminds me of some Drie Fonteinen gueuze, to be honest - so much oak

T: Sour, tart, woody, and lightly fruity - some funk, with some barnyard and hay, but the sour is more prominent, with some sharp acidic sour and some lactic flavor, musty dirty basement - some fruitiness, with some white grape, white apple - some white wine as well - loads of wood - chewy, deep oak - ripe wood

M: Medium body, smooth, high and fluffy carbonation, woody finish

O: Back in black

Oude Geuze Boon is a nice Gueuze. There's a lot of sour, some tart, and a ton of wood. I'm not sure how limited this is, but it's worth a try if you can find it.

2016 vintage. Poured from 750 mL bottle into tulip.
A: Pours a hazy lemon hue with high carbonation producing a 3+ bubbly, rocky white head with excellent retention.
S: Sweet orange, tart lemon, moderate farmhouse funk, dry earthy minerals, fresh wood, and a hint of salt. Quite the treat!
T: Sweet orange hits first, quickly followed by the tart lemon and the farmhouse funk. Then the dry earthy minerals and fresh wood kick in. There is a mild saltiness throughout. Pear, tart Granny Smith apple, and a hint of peach also emerge. Even better than the aroma with more depth and stronger notes!
M: Light body and refreshing. Excellent balance of sour, tart, and fruity sweetness. Mild saltiness. Very dry. Lingers and matures nicely on the palate too.
D: A truly exceptional geuze! Phenomenal for style...seek it out! Perfect balance. Love the depth the blend of various barrel aging gives this brew.
