Notes: Again, the basic old and young lambic are matured in oak casks. But here we add to one year-old lambic about 400 grams of real cherries per litre. This creates a second fermentation in the casks. Oude Kriek Boon then undergoes a further fermentation in the bottle and has an alcohol volume of 6.5%. After several months, the flavour has matured to the desired taste.
Oude Kriek Boon is a test of your patience. It should lie about 2 years in the bottle. At first, it tastes of fruit, especially sour cherries. Oude Kriek Boon eventually evolves into a deep taste reminiscent of Port or Madeira wine. This is kriek at its best.

2015 bottle, BB 12/07/2020.

Pours lovely ruby color. Translucent, but just barely. Didn't notice much yeast at the bottom, but there are more than a few floaties swirling around in the bubbles. Small pink cap leaves a little strips of lacing and sticks around.

Smells of sweet cherry juice. I don't notice any sour or tart smells.

Tastes of sweet cherry juice. No sourness, a slight tartness on the tip of the tongue. Slight oak tannins. Lively carbonation, and very fine bubbles.

Nothing at all "beery" about it. Straight sweet cherry juice, but really smooth and delicious. Really good kriek.

A-pours a copperish amber color, transparent with a slightly off white creamy head.

S-the nose is extremely artificial and sugar, lots of messy malts with notes of sweet raisins and chocolate. The cherry is so faint, the sugars are strong and non inviting. this is rather messy and poor in the nose.

T-the flavor follows the nose, messy and malty. the flavor is less pronounced and very flabby. chocolate malts and sugary raisins with light tart cherry. these flavors are all mild and very watery.

M-thinner feel and poor finish that falls off substantially. carbonation is low and the finish is watery and weak.

D-this is a poor attempt at a beer, flabby, flat, and watery. too malty and artificial with way too much sugar and not enough anything good.

A deep cherry color, quite clear, with a nice pink head. Not super carbonated though. Smells of cherry and also slightly tart with a woodiness to it as well. Almost cherry candy type aromas. Not very sour tasting at all, though not that sweet either. A little bit of a tannic edge finishes the beer off. Quite mellow for a lambic. Overall this has a nice cherry flavor backed by a pleasing light acidity. This would be a good first lambic beer for those who have not had the style, but in the end it just does not hold up.

As a lambic fan, I'm looking forward to trying this -- "Brewed in Lembeek, the village that gave Lambic its name." Poured from a 375ml corked-and-caged bottle into a Delirium tulip at low altitude in NY.

A: Pours a translucent red wine color (think a light pinot noir) with a thin pink head of almost no retention. Not what comes to mind based on the lambics I've had in the past. No lacing to speak of, either.

S: Mainly smells like Ocean Spray cranberry/cherry juice, with a hint of funky sourness in the background. A fairly strong aroma overall.

T: The cherry juice flavors are definitely overpowering here. The only thing that reminds me I'm drinking beer is the slight hint of funk on the finish. Almost no sour flavors come through. Overall, cloyingly sweet and pretty disappointing.

M: Medium-bodied and almost flat in terms of carbonation.

O: Definitely not a beer I'll revisit in the future. It's basically like drinking a bottle of cranberry-cherry juice.

750ml bottle from 2013. Opaque, dark red with a lacing of bubbles. Sour cherry smell. Medium feel, only lightly carbonated. Sweet cherry flavors. I don't really detect anything else. Great if you like cherries, but there are other krieks with more lambic character.

2013 bottle shared on 7/23/18. Poured a fairly dark red color with a small, pinkish head of foam. It smelled of cherry with hints of caramel. This really hits between sour and sweet - a little bit of both. Strong with the cherry flavor, though.

12 oz champagne bottle poured into my large St Feuillien goblet, Boon Kriek is a hazy magenta purple with a small, tight bubbled off-white head

Smell is very sweet and fruity, like fanta grape soda, with a very slight medicinal tinge, perhaps a hint of lacto. Not to bad, but like candy.

Taste is not as sweet, with some oaky, woodsy, and slightly metallic notes, little to no sourness, with nutty, slightly astringent aftertaste. The nuttiness (roasted peanuts) really clashes and doesn't work for me at all. Candied fruit and peanuts...pass!

Mouthfeel is very carbonated, but there is still that inevitable syrupiness from to much sugar. The slight acidity is evident in the prickliness on the tongue. The tannins and sugar coats the teeth in an unpleasant manner.

Drinkability is lower for me, this is just another candy beer with really no semblance of the base lambic, more like a wine cooler. Not worth the price, even though I got it on sale, I was hoping it would be funky with a slight cherry tinge. Instead it tastes like cherry slurpee syrup again in oak barrels. I now realize I was thinking of the Oude Kriek, whoops! I couldn't finish this, to sweet and syrupy.

Cannot get past the niquil taste. May be better with a few years on it but drinking the 2012 in late 2014 proved pretty disappointing to me. By a different one for a few bucks more would be my advice.

375ml bottle at the Malt House in Madison, WI. Poured into a Duvel tulip today, 1/27/2014.

App- dark brownish red body, minimal white head, looks syrupy. Not much retention, no lacing.

Smell- Medicinal, cough syrup, Robitussin. Some cherry flavor, extremely sweet.

Taste- Disgusting. Overly sweet with cherry makes it incredibly medicinal.

Mouthfeel- Medium-thick body, custardy. Had to choke half the bottle down. Luckily for me, another BA was sharing this bottle with me.

Overall- Disgusting example of a kriek. You can do way, way better than this with other shelf krieks.. even Lindeman makes a better one. Look for the likes of Hannsen's or Oude Beersel.

A: Poured with a small, light pink head that dissipated to a thin film quite quickly. Body is dark reddish pink, with good clarity.

S: Aroma is slightly vinous at first, then the sweet cherries come through and stand-out well. Not much at all in terms of sourness/funkiness.

T: Sweet cherry flavor is very dominant, but not overpowering. Slightly acidic and sour, but not as much as a lot of other Krieks I've had. No real barnyard characteristics present.

M: Light-medium body, with moderate-high carbonation. Not really puckering at all.

D: A tasty beer, but overall not one of the stronger fruit lambics out there.

375ml, Corked and caged, into White Birch flute. 2008.

A- Pink, purple, fizzy, three finger head that looks rose-colored. Head is very long-lasting.

S- Cherries, mild vinegar, but sweet and fruity notes dominate. Almost like cherry cough syrup or a cherry freeze pop.

T- A lot milder than what the nose was alluring to. It's still damn fruity, but it isn't cloyingly sweet, and there's a fair amount of mouth-puckering tartness here which does the cherry flavor very well. Eh, after 2/3 of the beer the tartness is all but gone. Boo.

M- Like carbonated cherry juice, not nearly tart enough... I was expecting more. Carbonation is fair, though.

D- Eh. Too juice-like. Needs moar sour.

Dark blood red with a modest pink head. Sweet and artificial cherry nose. Just a touch of sourness. The flavors are pretty much cherry cough syrup and artificial cherry flavoring. Sweet with barely a hint of sour. Medium body with mild carbonation. Nowhere near what I want in a kriek.

375ml shared by none other than cbutova.

Pours dark red with huge fluffy pink head, awesome colors, awesome retention with thick cotton candy lacing.

Big authentic cherry smell, very sweet, reminds me of Wisconsin Belgian Red. Slight notes of vinegar.

Taste also reminds me of WBR (fresh cherries) but much less intense, watered down. Pretty much all sweet, some tart, and no sour. Some bready and oak notes. Pretty one-note, excitement is lost after a few sips.

Pretty solid mouthfeel+carbonation, but I guess I've been spoiled on lambics for Cantillon, I was hoping for gut-wrenching sourness with a huge cherry taste. Easily drinkable and more or less enjoyable, but I can't see myself ever getting this for the price.

Bottle from New Beer Distrbutors, into a pint glass. Bottle notes a best before date of April 20, 2014.

Pours a dark red, fluffy and dense pink head. Nice lacing and strong retention. Pretty! Nose has some marschine cherry, mild medicinal notes, some lactic presence. A general yogurt feel to it. Taste has more cherry sweetness, mild lactic notes and this mysterious yogurt comes through again. Mouthfeel has some slight tartness. Good feel with some good cherry flavour. Tastes way better than the nose would indicate.

A clear red brew, the head is pink, small unevenly sized bubbles, a few lacings and some curtains.

The smell is distinctly fruity, cherries, rhubarbs and some yeast.

Sweet, candy-like cherry flavor, sour fruits and some almond, normal and bitter.

Medium carbonation, a bit spritzy, aggressive small bubbles, syrup feeling. rather light body.

A rather "normal" kriek, good as aperitif or digestif.
