this is still really well made cherry beer, but it isnt my favorite that they do. its still seemingly immature, sweet from the fruit rather than puckery from the lambic, but the freshness and authenticity of the fruit make it a worthy drink for me, and there still is a sturdy hit if funk mid palate, even though the sourness of the lambics we love the most doesnt really even show up. the cherries are ripe and juicy, not medicinal at all, although they crowd out any malt flavor for most o the drink. carbonation is fair, but the sweetness of the fruit makes this a beer i only need a little of, more of a cordial at this level than a beer, but you cant help but be impressed by the vibrancy of the cherries, and with the texture of the beer overall. its obviously a quality brew, but i think more time, less fruit, more lacto character, and a little more carbonation would really make this special. still, anytime you get good belgian kriek, you dont complain.

2012 label
Best before end 2017
Cork 40273

A: Deep, translucent ruby color with a foamy pink head that leaves some lacing. Very attractive beer. Some carbonation.

S: Sweet cherry pie filling with a hint of fresh cherry tartness. Musty oak is perceivable.

T: Sweet cherries with virtually no tartness. A hint of oaky woodiness. The finish is sweet and wet.

M: Round with moderate carbonation.

D: Drinkable. Not overly sweet, but not acidic or tart either. Straightforward cherry flavors.

(best by 19 06 2016 - poured into a fat Chouffe tulip)

L: crystal-clear, deep crimson liquid... marshmallow-y pink foam with a good bit of stick to it, streaks of sparkly lace here and there

S: dried, candied cherries... malted chocolate shake (deep in the background)... this smell is quite divine - what you'd hope for... a touch of a toasted grain and cough drop overtone... fairly potent and inviting overall...

T: not terribly sweet or sour, not (acid) bitter... pleasant degree of musty, wallpaper-y funk threaded through... vaguely metallic with some wet stone in the aftertaste, a little raw grain as well... certainly heavy on the fruit, in total - wish it would display a bit more tartness and acidity to balance and excite more

F: medium-full bodied with some rough-sanded edges... mild foamy wash on the palate, lifting it off the flesh, avoiding stickiness... little bit of a lacto/fruit-skin film coating the moist parts... in the end, dry enough and quite easy to drink

O: it's a fruit beer, it's very much flavorful but brings a slow, plodding counterweight to the meager brightness it reveals... cancelled out the semi-dry, earthy tones of the Manchego I started eating towards the end - so don't bother with that - fared a little better with the kale Gouda... that's all the cheese I got right now

Best by 6/18/17.

Pours a clear super dark red with a foamy reddish-khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is slightly sour with malt, cherry, vinegar, and acidic aromas. Taste is much the same with sweet and slightly sour malt and cherry flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty but it seems like the finish product was sweetened up quite a bit compared to other beers of the style.

Serving type: bottle.

Deep ruby red pour with a dark pink one-finger head. Strong aroma of fermented cherries. Great dark cherry flavor upfront with a slightly tart edge. Light to medium bodied with a decent amount of carbonation. Can also taste a hint raspberry and a little oak flavor but the cherry really stands out. Finish with a really nice lingering dark cherry tartness.
