Vibe: Cool vibe. Definitely leaning toward the industrial (open space, high ceiling) / hipster type vibe. Big open space. Went prime time at 6:30PM on a Thursday and had no trouble getting a table for two.

Quality: High quality. Fresh and tasty beer and high quality food.

Service: Good Service from the host. Attentive and promptly seated. They also seated me at a busy time without my guest, which was great opposed to having me wait until he got there. Drink and food service was a bit slow. Felt like they could’ve used more servers or had servers that were more attentive.

Selection: Nice selection of beer, especially regional, but not the most diverse from a style standpoint. Nothing unexpected of that’s what your seeking, although I they’ve been known to carry such beers. I had a Hamms and a Pipeworks Infinite Galaxy, so this out of towner was pleased.

Food: I thought the food was very good pub fare. Had some ghost pepper jerk chicken wings that were very nice. The fish (cod) and chips were also tasty.

Would definitely go back next time in St. Paul.

Edit - Went again in September 2019.

Visited around 5:30. Still light out. Sat at the bar. The place was about half full when I arrived.

V - A drinking vibe both beer and brown spirits. But no so beer geekish as to turn off the non-beer drinkers. Clean and bright. 4.25

Q - Proper glassware but a few taps pouring foamy(-). 4.25

Sel - Huge list, five different Abysses on tap. I had a 2015 Abyss and Ninja vs Unicorn. 4.5

Ser - Bartender was great. 4.5

F - An average looking menu. I had the fish and chips, which was good but great. Fries were very good. 4.0

Quite possibly my favorite thing about Dark Horse is it's location - as much as Dark Horse frequently has some great beers, I love that I can have some food and a beer... and then walk right next door to have a few more beers at Barrel Theory.

I really enjoy the ambiance at Dark Horse - it's slightly dimmer, with nice candle lights and pleasant lighting at the bar. Also, it's not overwhelmingly loud - the acoustics things to have been well-considered.

The bar is quite excellent - while I'm not much of a whisky drinker (anymore), the selection is quite good. I believe flights are available as well, which I'm always a fan of. The beers are obviously the truly interesting offering here - frequent tap takeovers and special beer weeks are the main attraction. I had a Hawaiian Speedway Stout when I last visited, and Bourbon Paradise was also on tap, plus 2015 Bourbon County Brand Stout, and a few others.

The food is consistently delicious. It's not a gourmet restaurant, so don't expect that, but the food is quite good and (for a downtown location) reasonably priced.

Great spot - really dig it.
