1L howler from Sherbrooke Liquor store - apparently brewed with Modern Times Bourbon Barrel Aged Coffee beans. So is that kind of like adding wood chips or spirals to impart the desired oak flavours? Just asking for a friend.

This beer pours a pretty solid black, with minor amber basal edges, and three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly brown head, which leaves some decent painted and frilly lace around the glass as it slowly dissipates.

It smells of rich artisanal coffee, bittersweet cocoa powder, some subtle acrid wet oakiness, cold cream, bready and grainy caramel malt, a faint damp ashiness, and some understated earthy, musty, and floral green hops. The taste is semi-sweet, bready and doughy caramel malt, medium-dark chocolate pudding, cafe-au-lait (heavy on the milk), a still fairly innocuous rye barrel woodiness, soft earthy nuts, and more laid-back leafy, weedy, and musky floral hoppiness.

The carbonation is average in its palate-satiating frothiness, the body an adequate middleweight, and quite smooth, with a nice airy creaminess right there from the get-go. It finishes off-dry, the chocolate, caramel, and genial coffee in a lingering arms race.

Overall - another stellar offering from this well-behaved toddler brewing concern (best I could do, Patrick old boy). Full of flavour, pleasantly restrained in the acidity typical of a coffee stout, and with zero sign of the extra 2 and a half points of ABV. Great stuff!

This is a great coffee stout. Extremely balanced, and not to astringent as many are. This has the flavour that many require age to optain. Only issue is that it comes acrpss a bit thin
