A: appears opaque and very dark brown, but if held to the light, it's crystal clear and mahogany; 1 finger finely pored light brown head that receded to a wispy cap; light lacing;

S: balanced between deeply roasted grain and milk chocolate;

T: deeply roasted grain through the middle; milk chocolate comes out a bit toward the end; moderate bitterness with a bit of coffee in the aftertaste;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;

O: I liked the aroma better than the flavor;

Reviewed on 11/14/2009. Growler from the brewpub. Pours black with a small ring of tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, roasted nuts, chocolate, peanut butter. Flavor is equally nutty, with some charred roasted malt and bitter chocolate. Excellent porter with a nice blend of roasted malt, nuts, and chocolate. Very drinkable too. Well done!

A: Pours a jet black color with a half finger caramel colored head. Nice retenion and decent spider web lacing.
S: Roasted barley notes with a nice infusion of chocolate. Slight hop presence peaks in also.
T/M: Roasted barley with burnt coffee, sweet chocolate and caramel flavors all make the taste buds dance. Roasted malt notes sort of morph into dark fruit or fig flavors. Extra silky smooth and soft on the palate with a dry finish and slight hoppyness. Burnt coffee notes in the aftertaste linger at the back of the mouth.
D: If they didn't have so many other great beers, this would be one that I would sip on all night long. Smooth mouthfeel makes drinking this a pleasure.

Have not had a good porter in a while. Have now.

Poured a dark brown in color. No matter how hard I tried (short of putting it up to a flashlight), I could not get any light to penetrate the beer. Very little head and hardly any lace.

Nose was burnt coffee. Sometimes when I pull the coffee pot out and a couple of drop fall down from the filter and hits the hot plate out comes a very (almost) therapeutic burnt coffee smell. That is what is smells like.

Flavor was a lot of the same as I got from the nose. Also got some charcoal and some overripe plums at the very end. Sweet flavors quickly followed up by some bitter malts. Slight hop presence--most of the bitterness came from all the roasted grains.

Medium bdy with a nice dry finish. Dry enough to make another sip very desirable.

Another greaat beer from Willimantic. Solid, flavorful and completely satisfying.

Enjoyed on tap at the brewpub.

Shaker pint glass presentation. Dense 3/4" tan head over the almost opaque dark brown brew, with heavy lacing. Deep, roasty aroma, with dark malts dominant over a light hops character. Taste is dueling sweet and bitter dark malts, then mellows into some roastiness, and then closes with a tilt back toward the sweetness, coupled with a tinge of hops bittern. Mouthfeel and drinkability are superb, went down so smooth, and paved the way for swallow after swallow. Left me wanting more, but it was time to head home. Check this one out, for sure.

The postal porter is probably the best porter I've tried this holiday season. The porter seemed to be jet black to me, the hops were lightly balanced which I really appreciated since an overhopped porter tends to lose its creamy mouthfeeling. Aromas had to be of chocolate and coffee since my tongue screamed delicious. My all-time favorite Willi brew by far. This beer went down so good I almost regret I tried a few others instead of spending my lunch embracing the glory of this seasonal favorite.

Very dark brown, maybe black no light gets thru, with a small brown head. A great aroma of coffee and chocolate from the roasted malts. At first there is some chocolate on the tip of the tongue then the roasted malt bitterness takes control of the whole tongue witha dry coffee finish on the back at the end of the swallow.

On tap.

A deep brown head with great retention. Condensed lacing throughout the pint with solid strength. A thick black in color with a burnt brown hue.

Coffee, hazlenut, and milk chocolate aromas. Very powerful aromas begging to be drank.

Coffee and chocolate flavors along with the roasted malt sweetness. Hazlenut and almonds work as added flavors that are balanced very well. A dry and slightly bitter aftertaste; all very pleasant.

Full bodied; slightly syrupy and coats the palate very well.

A very drinkable porter; this one will leave you wanting more so be prepared to have a few more after the first one. One of the better porter's I've had in a while.

Arrives looking deep black, with a thick tan head. Unfiltered?
Aroma is malty and chocolatey. Extremely roasty and rich. Very robust.
Flavor is very chocolatey, with some coffee and a touch of cherry. Very clean. Carbonation is moderate to mild. Very good. I had a bunch of this beer and didn't regret a drop. There's a lot of good porters out there, but this one has a great pronounced chocolatey flavor that makes it memorable. Probably one of Willi's best beers. Thank goodness for Stein Night Sundays!
