This beer starts as one of our Imperial Stout recipes - aptly named our “Vibes” recipe now - and after two rather tedious brew days, more than a month in the fermenter slowly fermenting into a huge, inky, chewy Imperial Stout that we call Vibes, we then finish it on coffee from our great friend Scott Carey of Sump Coffee in South City St. Louis.

After cupping all of the available coffees from Sump, for this batch of Coffee Shop Vibes we chose a Colombian Duarte roasted by Scott.

Notes of caramel found in the coffee, as the beans, when blended with our beer, exhibit huge notes of milk chocolate and caramel candies, bakers chocolate and dark chocolate covered coffee beans. The massive notes of chocolate and overall softness of the coffee led us to increase the pounds of coffee per barrel of beer slightly, over previous batches of Coffee Shop Vibes, but not to a level to lose what Coffee Shop Vibes has become!

Many thanks to Scott for continuing to work with us on our coffee beers and especially Coffee Shop Vibes!

It pours like old motor oil, with a dense, brown head. The coffee is heavy roast, dark chocolate and espresso brownie batter, clove and maybe.. nutmeg? That may be a stretch, but there is a familiar like, five spice note in there. Mouthfeel is soft, with an alcohol burn that grows as it warms. Actually starts to dominate the flavor, which eventually can’t hold up to the wonderful aromas. Great beer, but the heavy booze flavors get a bit overwhelming. Small criticism for such a finely made beer.

Viscous obsidian black with a moderate mocha head settling to a creamy melted chocolate ice cream-like collar leaving curvy arching lace on the glass.

This magnificent coffee masterpiece exhibits perfectly charred coffee bean that emulates crispy cacao nib with a woody bitterness that mitigates the luscious mocha ice cream that takes hold all over the palate. Notes of dark chocolate chip and even thick vanilla crème fraîche roll right alongside this somehow non-cloying decadence.

The medium slick body is thickened by a fluffy soft carbonation finishing semi-dry with a light sting. It becomes even more velvety thick as it warms.

The flavors are extremely intensely expressive in his version of CSV, and I actually feel bad for opening this for just the two of us thinking it'd be as "just okay" as the previous versions I'd had. This early 2019 bottle is absolutely excellent.

Pours pitch black. Dark brown head with 1-2 fingers. head dissipates to a thin brown ring around the outside of the glass. Nose is rich chocolate, roasted malts, ground coffee beans, alcohol. Taste is brownies, fudge, bakers chocolate, not getting a whole lot of coffee, comes through more as a bitterness that gives the bakers chocolate component. A notable booziness is present. Thick, viscous mouthfeel. Overall, a wonderful experience. Truly delicious, although not nearly as coffee forward as prior iterations.
