John Labatt ClassicJohn Labatt Classic
Notes: John Labatt Classic was introduced in 1983 as Canada’s only national domestic “premium beer”. It is Krausen-brewed (slow, low temperature with a secondary fermentation process) and has a longer cold-aging process. Classic uses all-malt and a unique blend of western-grown North American hops, providing a smooth, full flavour product with a true malt taste that is slightly sweet.

This beer poured out as a clear golden yellow color with a fizzy white head on top that leaves a very light scattered lacing on the glass. The smell of the beer has some grainy aromas as well has some moderate hop aromas too. The taste of the beer was average to say the least, it had some sweet grains to start then it went into a dry bitter finish. The mouthfeel of the beer was carbonated nicely and was very drinkable at least. Overall this beer was ok, I can't really find much to rave about over it though.

Note was cleaning out my beer fridge and uncovered a bottle of this stuff which was at least 9 years old. I had a trucker friend that used to bring me back cases of this stuff from Canada, I really liked it back in the day, it was a good notch above the yellow fizzy stuff.
Anyway it poured with a nice thick head and laced a little. There was 'things' suspended in the gold yellow brew. I was very surprised at the taste, it had hints of caramel and vanilla in it which was not in the beer 9 years ago. Felt like velvet in my mouth and I really enjoyed it. It was a nice surprise.

A - Poured a golden color with a thin white head that leaves some lacing behind

S - Is mostly of grainy corny malt

T - Tastes like sweet corny malt too

M - This beer has a medium body with higher carbonation to it

D - While this isn't the best beer out there it really isn't all that bad I'd rather drink this than most other American Lagers

Serving notes - 0.5L German glass, cellar temp
A - Light malt aroma. No hops.
A - Clear straw colored. Three fingers of head on pour, a thin quarter inch of foam lingers for the entire beer.
M - medium, low to medium carbonation.
T - No hops. Light malty sweetness. Some corn or other adjunct flavor. Very clean finish.
D - Not much different than any US macro.

A- The appearance is a nice golden color. The head of the beer was nice and profound when I first poured the beer but disinagrated quickly after a couple of sips.

S- The smell is nothing extraordinary. The best way to describe it, is it smells like any old beer.

T- The taste is very average. Nothing really stands out and there is no real unique characteristic to the taste. There is no apparent inital taste but there is a mildly malty after taste.

M- The feel resembles a watered down, or a light, beer. There isn't a lot of carbanation and it goes down rather easily.

D- The drink-ability is good. Since there are no harsh flavors or aromas, it goes down pretty smooth.

This one pours a golden amber. It leaves a decent thick head that lasts longer than the Labatt red or porter as well as a little more lacing, though still light. I got mostly grains and light citrus in the smell. I strained to find the hops, but I found them hiding. The taste is mostly the grains, maybe some cereal grains, light sweetness and citrus. Hops was hiding again but not completely missing. Mouthfeel is a little thin but at least this one doesn't seem as diluted as some of the other Labatt offerings. It seems to be an attempt at mixing micro with macrobrewing efforts. They should just go all the way.

Certainly not a top pick in the category, but it isn't all that bad. The appearance and aroma is that of a typical pale lager. There isn't really anything special taste wise. With that said, I don't mind sipping these down. The taste is lite enough to sip on while doing yard work or stuff around the house. Not a bread winner... but it isn't terrible either.

Great looking bottle, not bad in the glass and then we slip into mediocrity.
Pours a light golden or straw yellow. Head is white to one shade off white with solid head retention.
Aroma - get some graininess that is on the weak side. Average carbination some sweetness and a dry finish.
Because of the head, head retention and some sweetness it actually reminds me a little of Miller High Life but at nearly twice the price.
There is nothing offensive about this beer other than its price is way, way too high for the mundane characteristics and quality that it provides the end user.

This beer poured a light yellow with a big head and lots of visible carbonation. The smell is some standard malt and maybe some corn. The taste is a lot like Labbatt Blue with a tiny bit of hops, starts off with some sweet malt that's cut pretty quickly by some very faint hops. The thinness of the beer and carbonation make for a pretty crisp mouthfeel. Not a fantastic tasting beer, but a pretty drinkable one.

12oz bottle purchased as part of a mixed 12-pack. Pours a light straw-colored translucent body with a short-lived half-inch white head. Smells sweet, slightly vegetal. Tastes vegetal, sweet, hints of bread. Very light thin mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. While initially unimpressive, this beer grows on you as you drink it. Nothing special, for sure not the best example of the style, but an easy-drinker and I wouldn't refuse it if it were given to me.

Feels like I'm drinking an upscale Pabst...although I'm not nearly as satisfied with the value. The bottle has all the hopeful markings of a beer that I'd want to label with a proud red maple leaf hanging out near the top. Hints of straw/corn and a head that faded quickly after pouring. Next to no lacing (which I don't care about...just describing). Feels like a Macro disguised as a craft brew and drinks the same. Not terrible, just not anything noteworthy. This beer lands in the purgatory between Macro and Micro, and doesn't accomplish either field really well. If this stuff was in 30 packs for 10 bucks, we'd all be rejoicing and respecting a quality value brew. As it stands, it's part of a $10 mixed 12 pack that makes one wonder if it's just a repackaged malt that would have found it's way into a 40oz bottle if the Micro market didn't explode in the past 5 years. Beats the usual Macro line-up, but save your money for something you love drinking.

So I bought this 12 pack with the Classic, the Red Amber, and the Porter. Good price at $9.99. This Classic is just average, though. In a pint glass the beer was a yellow color with a medium-sized white head. Aroma very limited, just a faint grainy odor. It tasted of corn and a tiny bit of hops. Not a beer I'd want to drink a lot of.

The beer pours a pale gold color with a 1/2" white head that fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a dry and grainy pilsner malt scent with low hops and a clean lager yeast aroma. The taste is decent as well. It has a crisp, clean taste with just a hair of malt sweetness. It's easily quaffable with a dry, prickly finish. The mouthfeel is good. It is a low bodied beer with good carbonation. This is a pretty good all malt lager. I'm not sure why they ever introduced adjuncts into brewing. The originals are so much better.

Poured clear light gold with a thin foamy white head that reduced quickly, leaving light stringy lace.
Smells like weak malt with a weird off scent that I can't quite put my finger on.
Taste is fairly clean overall, a touch of sweetness in the middle, but finishes with a crisp grassy bitterness.
Mouthfeel is lightly creamy; good carbonation levels.
It's drinkable, but not much better than a Labatt Blue.

Another Labatt beer from the variety case that I bought. This one was poured into a pint glass and created an average-looking white quickly-dissapating head with a little bit of lacing. The aroma isn't bad it's just not really there. Slight earthy grain stink like a farmers field. Or some freshly hacked hay being baled. Slight bitter presence. A little hops, perhaps. Tastes slightly bitter, hint of sweet malt, and cereal grainy. Nothing special but not bad. I can't really speak out about any outstanding flavors here. It's better than Pabst Blue Ribbon but inferior to Sam Adams. It's somewhere in between. Medium body and goes down pretty easy, I suppose.

I know, I am not saposed to like anything but micro brews but I have a softspot for some Labatt beers. This beer is very simular to a Labat Blue but a little differnt to mix it up a bit, a blond lager that is easy to drink, I don't think anyone can say that it is terrible, the flavor is not very strong but if your looking for somethng that won't fill you up this is a good choice.

Basically the very same as a Labatt Blue, light yellow with lots of bubbles, can see right through it's so lite, thin white head and very mild lacing.Smell was mild skunk and wet grass and corn.Taste was clean and refreshing with some pronuonced corn and bitterness shining,a little mouth puckering tartiness and finishing off with some sour notes, carbonation really coming but all going down watery thin, extra cold on a hot day it'll serve it's purpose.

A - poured a clear bubbly golden straw color with a foamy 1/2" white head that lasted less time than it took to type this. Poor lacing

S - It basically smelled like a Labatt Blue but with a stronger maltiness. Cooked corn husk, some malts, a bit of hoppy grassiness and notes of sulfur.

T - Pretty unbalanced bitterness fighting with malts and the malts winning. It was somewhat sweeter than what I expected. Eh...

M - light bodied and very carbonated. Not as thin as I expected. Hmm...

D - I gave the other half of it to my gf and I cracked open a Unibroue Maudite instead.

Overall - I wasn't deeply impressed with this beer. I personally would've preferred a normal Labatt Blue. This one seemed like it was struggling to be a craft brewed lager but failed. I only paid $4 for a 6 pack but I feel like the other 4 bottles I have in there (I gave one away for a friend to try) are now useless. If you want a macro lager, just get the Blue.

Pours a clear golden color. Small head, no lacing.

No aroma , this could be my allergies.

Taste is clean , I get some grainy sweetness. Very small perception of hop bite.

Mouthfeel is smooth , carbonation is good.

Overall an easy drinking beer , but I expected more from a signature brew.

12oz to flare pint, pours a golden straw color, white foamy head fades to lacing

smells skunky, malts, not really appealing

taste is bitter, dry, skunk, good amount of carbonation, not really tasty but at least flavorful, i wouldn't want to drink many of these

mouthfeel is crisp and nicely carbonated, bitter, not really amazing

i wouldn't likely buy again.

S: Lager, macro, candy sweetness, not much else

A: Yellow, fizzy, standard burp beer

M: Good foam, stinging bitter at the end with candy like aftertaste.

T: Don't know what to make of it. Not a corn soda, very candy like with a mild hop profile with a slight grapefruit taste. This is a slightly better macro.

O: It's the average fizzy with a bit more flavor. I think this would be a great pizza companion but is too complex for lawnmower.

A- Golden yellow color, clear, one finger thick fluffy head that lowered to a thin lacy cover

S- Pale malts, corn, grains, fairly sweet

T- Honey, light malts, corn, grains, hint of hops

M- Light/medium body, medium carbonation, smooth, crisp, sweet

D- Not too bad

I wish they would push and market this over Labatt Blue because in my opinion this is much better. Still isn't highly rated on my scale but a lot better than Blue.

It pours with a big fizzy head that fades fast leaving nothing behind. The body is clear with a light golden color. It has a rather light aroma with hints of light sweet malts. The taste has a semi-sweet barley malt and corn flavor with very light hops in the background. Its body is light with a rather thin texture and an almost flat carbonation. Overall it is a rather boring beer to look at and drink.

I had the good fortune of trying this on a trip back to Western New York, and I'm glad I did. It pours very well--two fingers of white head on a dark body. The smell is well-malted, for sure, but little else emerges. I like the taste, bitter-sweet with lots of malt, and hops sneaking in the back door. The smooth texture does much for this, blending with the back bite near the end to add some much-needed complexity to this nice beer. This is a good beer overall, and Labatt's should take what they do periodically with John Labatt Classic and infuse the rest of their beer with it. This, in fact, should be their regular Blue. It's far superior to it.
