having a beer like this from these guys, that is so decidedly different from the hazy ipa types that are making them famous, to me anyway, gives them an entirely higher and more meaningful degree of respect, this is a competent brewery through and through, not a one trick pony riding a fad, not that i thought that anymore after drinking and loving so much of their beers, but this really does give me a lot of confidence in them, i mean, this is a killer belgian dark, not overly complex, but that is to its credit in this case, where so many american brewers ferment these yeast strains at brutally high temperatures and all nuance is lost to these esters that make people think they dont like belgian beer, despite it not being belgian at all. this is refined and understood, and the subtle but unique yeast complexion is a welcomed change of pace in one of these. the dark grain is really nice too, powdered baking cocoa, light anise, ashy roast, under extracted coffee, dried red fruits, and a soft cooked sweetness as well. i think its excellent. black pepper, tobacco, and raisin also make appearances. i could see this being great in port wine or cognac barrels, but it hardly needs them. an impressive beer in a neglected and misrepresented style in the american craft lexicon. thank you to outer range for restoring some decency to it!
