From a 330ml bottle served straight from the fridge at 8 degrees Celsius into a white wine glass. Best before date: 06/07/19.

Look: The beer pours a clear gold with 6cm of dense, rocky, white head that dissipates into a solid cap within 4+ minutes. Exceptional lacing and persistent head. Effervescent. Beer doesn't look much better than this.

Smell: Medium-light strength and balanced. The aroma is very Belgian with fruity esters and spicy phenols along with grainy pale malts. The yeast dominates with little to no hop aroma. I wish the nose packed a bit more punch.

Taste: Moderate strength and leaning towards bitter. Fruity and spicy with some ethanol (especially as the beer warms). Pale malts provide a platform for the other ingredients which fail to come together as a delicious combination. The finish is pretty short (dry) and faint with moderate bitterness.

Feel: Medium body with high carbonation. Prickly and sharp with restrained alcohol warmth. Effervescent with moderate astringency (which counts as a negative). The mouthfeel is not bad but it's a bit unpleasant.

Overall: Augustijn Grand Cru falls short of my expectations for a Belgian brew. It looks absolutely stunning but the rest of the journey is downhill. It's not simple per se but it certainly lacks complexity and punch for the beer that it is. Finding specific descriptors was a challenge so I kept most of my terms general. Something's off and I'm not sure if it's just lack of craftsmanship. I'd be curious to try it fresh on draught to see how it adds up. Having said that, it's not all bad and it could be worth a try. However, there are plenty of more delicious examples of the style. This is the first beer I've tried from this brewery and I'm left unimpressed.

-Golden-orange look and very opaque. Big foam head, the foam isn't very dense and leaves a trace of fine foam in the vase.
-Not a huge smell but it reminds a little bit to the smell of Hefeweizen.
-Carbonation can be felt, hints of alcohol.
-The taste is ver good.
Overall a very good beer.

Gold color with orange reflections, slightly hazy. Head white, made of fine bubbles, creamy in consistency, sizable, but not for long remains on the surface of beer.
Aroma: yeast, wine, slightly floral, slightly sour.
The taste very clearly noticeable white grapes, yeast, again delicate floral note and characteristic of Belgium. Each sip reminds me of wine, maybe even champagne.
Gentian properly shortage, high saturation characteristic of sparkling wines. Alcohol although nice warms up the esophagus, it is perfectly stowed away.

Pours golden with a bit white head and lacing sticking all over the glass. Pleasantly light, fruity nose. Taste has a grainy malty sweetness with some of the same fruit as on the nose, but not overly sweet or copying like some of the Augustijn products. Definitely the best of the Augustijn labeled products.

330 mL bottle from a sampler pack picked up at the LCBO a few months back; best before May 7 2016. Served at cellar temperature.

Pours a hazy, effervescent golden-yellow colour, generating about one inch of puffy, eggshell-white froth at the surface. The head recedes, slowly but surely, over the course of the next ten minutes or so; left behind in its wake is a modest cap and a generous, foamy collar. The aroma is fairly typical of the style - grainy, bready malts, with some honey sweetness, red apple, apricot and pear, with plenty of yeastiness. Candi sugar and clove are also noticeable, with a hint of grassy, floral hops.

Pleasant flavour, with nothing out of the ordinary worth mentioning. The malt profile is grainy and sweet, with a wide range of orchard fruit flavour coming to the fore - red apple, apricot and pear, with faint suggestions of banana, citrus and sultana raisin. It becomes yeastier and spicier toward the finish, as notes of clove, white pepper and grassy dryness successfully cut through the sweetness of the candi sugar and malt profile. Off-dry aftertaste, with the 9% abv hovering barely on the fringe of detectability. Medium-bodied, with assertive carbonation and a soft, smooth, somewhat prickly feel on the palate. It's much easier to knock back than beers of this strength tend to be.

Final Grade: 4.02, an A-. Augustijn Grand Cru falls under one of my favourite style categories - and while I wouldn't say that this BSPA manages to top any of my first choices in this grouping, it's still a very well-made and exceptionally quaffable Belgian pale. Great stuff; I'd pick this up again, even in its sampler pack format - and for the record, the other five beers are worth checking out, too. Not a world-beater, but beers don't necessarily need to be world class to be completely satisfying.
