From the 750ml bottle in a snifter. This mighty nice "imperial stout"
pours a rich ruby tinged dark brown with a nice head of pale tan
foam that subsides to a thick ring, light sudsy layer, and shows some
rather attractive soapy lacing. Nose of dark fruits and dark sweet
chocolate with dark candy sugars intertwined nicely. Flavors exceed
the nose on the "imperial" and "stout" with a dark candy laced dark
cocoa laden Belgian special ale with dark breaded fruit notes of dates
and bruised plums with a touch of anise and cola with hints of vanilla
and earthy malts. Nice mouth feel; medium body, smooth, warming,
boozy, medium light fluffy and silky carbonation, and a sweet candy malt
finish.

Overall, this is a solid BSDA with an Imperial Stout moniker that
while may be a bit of a stretch on the play field is a very nice
brew that covers all the bases for what Belgium does best---
make great little brews with punch and interesting use
of ingredients...even if it is outside of the category.

Cheers

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a very dark orange red, with a fine, two finger khaki head with great retention and thick lacing. Aroma of lightly caramel and toasted malt, Belgian yeast, fresh and dried plums and cocoa. Flavor is caramel malt with light toasted biscuit notes, fresh and dried plums, dates, raisins, cocoa. Finishes with delicious dark fruit esters and cocoa. Medium bodied with light creaminess and sharp carbonation. Interesting. This is delicious, but except for some light toasted malt and cocoa notes, it has no resemblance to a stout and certainly not a Russian imperial stout as categorized here. I thought there used to be a Belgian stout style, but this is even fruitier than than a typical Belgian stout. The profile is very close to a Belgian strong dark ale with some darker malt and cocoa flavors. The brewery calls this an imperial stout, but unlike most of that style in color and malt. On the other hand, as a somewhat toasty Belgian strong dark, this is very, very good. The flavor has great Belgian yeast dark fruit character and the finish, which has both bright dark fruit and chocolate notes is quite fine. I liked this a lot, even if it was not what I expected. Worth a try.

BEERchitect has it right: "Make no burns about it, this is a quadruple ale, not in stout clothes but rather in stout socks perhaps."

It is not dark enough for a stout, tastes like a quad (Belgian yeast esters, dark fruit, etc.), and isn't nearly tasty enough to justify the 12% abv. Not undrinkable by any means, but also not that good and not at all an imperial stout.

Dipping their toe into the roasty and robust character of charred grains, the Brewery Van Steenberge knows a thing or two about the stronger, dark Belgian ale, but stout...? Make no burns about it, this is a quadruple ale, not in stout clothes but rather in stout socks perhaps.

Deep ruby and jaded in a gaze of dark shadows, the ominous ale share a yeasty haze and a rocky ecru cap with the eye. Rife with dark fruit, vinous spice and a candied sweet scent, the nose picks up on aspects of spiced rum and brandy. Sweet on the tongue, the candied malts develop into a savory taste of brown sugar, molasses and steely caramels to delight the tastebuds.

Remaining rich on the tongue, the more yeast driven flavors begin to emerge. Fruity with a plethora of fig, cherry, date, raison, plum and prune, the fruitiness dives right into a rummy, brandy soaked middle palate of fruitcake. Trailing yeast spices reveal a balance of peppercorn, allspice and light clove for a peppery counterpart to the fruit and trailing sweetness.

Lightly bittered, the hops provide a woodsy bite while the mild roast character from grain brings a mild coffee and cocoa contribution for a complex but rounded taste. Full in body, the beer's wine influence peaks through the roast and sweetness for an ideal holiday beer, that's not quite a stout.

Pours a deep ruby brown color with a huge tan head and tons of sticky lacing.

The smell is dark fruit and milk chocolate.

The taste is very sweet dark fruits with some chocolate. The beer screams Belgium.

The mouthfeel is sticky, medium body, and medium carbonation.

This is a really great beer, very sweet. I would have a hard time pegging this as a stout if I tasted it blind. There's a ton of Belgium influence on this beer.

Had this at a BJs beer dinner. Awesome body to this beer, I got dark fruit/dates out of it with slight bitterness but excellent maltiness.. Good abv but not so boozy to be a problem. This is good.

From magnum 25.4 ounce bottles into 8 ounce Pilsner tasting glasses, at the December Holiday Prime Rib Beer Dinner BJ's Brewhouse, Hurst, TX. It was very good and paired with BJ's Prime Rib that was served rare with mashed potatoes and an au jus dip. A "you should have been there" moment in dinner times. If you find this one on the shelf, take her home. She should age magnificently. Good Beer Times. From memory as it was not posted for a quick review and I forgot a pen.
Can't edit the Russian out of IMPERIAL STOUT??
"Strong stout with a Belgian twist. Fruity notes combine with rich and robust malt flavors balanced by a delicious roasted bitterness."
