Nectar of the gods. The flavors were deep and complex. The typical bitterness of an Imperial Stout was very subdued in this offering. With this ABV a few snifters had me snuggling the bottle to tell it how much I love it. The bottle I had was brewed 2018 and tasted 2021. I look forward to finding another bottle to give it the full description it deserves.

Poured a brown body with minimal head and no lace. The aroma is a mix of yeast, chocolate, and chocolate cherries. Smooth, slightly dry roasted malt taste under a chocolate cherry like sweetness with touches of that classic Belgian yeast. Get some mild sweet booziness, which is not surprising considering the ABV, but it is easy to drink and enjoyable. This isn't really a stout, at least not the classic booze bomb stouts that stout lovers like my wife like, but if you like Belgians and stouts then this is worth trying.

Pours a dark-brown color with a medium top off beige head that dissolves quickly.
Aroma is of dark malts, toffee, dark bread, chocolate, raisins, figs and spices.
The flavour starts off sweet with strong malty feel in the back. Dried dark fruits with bready malty notes allong with some nice chocolate tones. The finish has some slight herbal bitterness ballanced with the malty tones in the background. The finish leaves a long aftertaste, the alcohol is masked very good in the flavour. Soft and creamy mouthfeel with a medium carbonation and a medium body.
Really nice and enjoyable.

Got this in the mix sixer pack at just 3 bucks for the bottle it's quite a good deal for a 12% stout. One of the few beers from the pack that didn't erupt with carbonation. In a way it's quite good sweet well hidden abv smooth but not much stout notes very Belgium bubble gum, stone fruit and some sugars. Oh a way I want to say it's a real high gravity quad. Mouth feel is quite good a touch of booze in the taste but for the Abv it's extrodinary!

Overall I would love to find it again 12oz bottles around same price or on tap. Definitely a beer I could drink a few a sitting!

2/13/22 Bottle from six pack variety.

As many have already noted, this is an interesting marriage of an BSDA and RIS. Definite flavor notes from Gulden Draaks Belgium ales. Stoney, toffee and alcohol comes through. Sweet, but not over powering for the style.

Aroma is dark fruit sweetness, a hint of dark malts and bubblegum. The flavor is fruit/dark fruit, malts, Belgian yeast and a mildly sweet/characteristic Belgian strong alcoholic finish.

11.2 ounce bottle. Dark dark brown with lasting small tan head and a little lace. Coffee chocolate earthy ashy aroma with subdued fruit. Sweet chocolate with some plummy fruit and herbal bitterness. Medium-full body, highly attenuated. Lively fine carbo. Very good.

So... as a beer hunter, this brew is off the charts. Nice lacing on a surprisingly lightly colored RIS.

Nose has notes of chocolate and Belgian yeast esters. Quite a bit of Quad in the malt construct. Quite delicate overall.

Flavor is ridiculous. Big smooth malt front. Sweet malt and lightly bitter chocolate notes. Lots of dark fruits, with figs featuring prominently. Dry but amazingly mild bitterness. Lots of malt in the finish

Feel is surprisingly light and lusciously creamy.

This beer is superb.

750ML bottle, 2018 vintage, poured into a snifter at 55 degrees F:
L - dark with very little head
S - notes of toffee and peat
T - flavors of caramel, toffee, peat, burnt brown sugar
F - lots of carbonation, although it settles a bit, medium mouthfeel
O - this beer drinks like a Belgium dark ale, wonderful flavors

11.2oz undated bottle poured into a tulip glass at 60° Fahrenheit 12% ABV per label. The beer pours opaque dark brown with prolific light brown head. The head recedes to a rocky and uneven cap and ring. Heavy lacing. The aroma is faint with some chocolate and coffee plus a hint of Belgian yeast. The taste is semisweet with the clovey yeast flavor popping through first and the restrained dark malts offering coffee and chocolate on top of the Belgian malt base. Moderate bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with above average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, delicious in it's own world. Classified as an RIS currently on BA, I would offer that it's more of a love child between a BSDA and an RIS. The type where all the good stuff from both comes through in the offspring.

Ok. I am drinking this right after a 9000 quad. And I would say this one is better and more likely to be a quad than 9000 quad (I feel like "9000 quad" is more like a dark strong ale).
Again this one does not like any stout I had before.
Maybe we should have a new category as Imperial Stout - Belgian?

Part of a variety 6-pack $23.79 Tamuras 11.2oz bottle
2018 Edition so 3 years old
Smell of dark chocolate
Dark black color
Heavy, creamy mouthfeel
Medium carbonation
Taste of chocolate, figs, raisins, molasses, hides 12% ABV really well
Overall a great beer. As I just bought this beer in a boxed 6-pack I was surprised that it is from 2018 as this was put on the shelf rather recently so they must age it at the brewery. When a high ABV beer can hide the alcohol so well you know its well made. Really fantastic at this price.

Pour was a clear light brown, dark black-brown and close to opaque in the glass; 12% abv but you'd never know it - kinda drinks like a brown ale/ Baltic porter hybrid - sweet, with something like a roasted molasses character - sweet brown bread flavors with notes of chocolate and licorice... Mild bitterness (mostly sweet), medium-bodied, with a hoppy shellac to the finish...

Russian imperial stout? I don't know - it really isn't like any RIS I've ever had - if there was a Belgian stout category it would go there...

Gulden Draak Imperial Stout Limited Edition from Brouwerij Van Steenberge NV. Purchased 11/10/20 for $ 22.20 (Including tax and discount) for 25.4 oz cork and cage bottle ($ 0.874/oz) from State Line Liquor, Elkton, MD. On shelf at store and stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 9/1/21.
Marked on front of shrink-wrapped label “Limited Edition 2018” and on side of label “Brew Tank No.1, Brew Year 2018”. Served at 52.5 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 57 degrees. Opens with a distinct “POP” but no geyser.
Appearance – 3.5.
First pour – Amber brown (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Ruby brown (SRM 24), opaque. When held to direct light, penetration occurs around the edges, then beautiful ruby/garnet and clear.
Head – Large (Maximum 5.5 cm, aggressive center pour), buff, medium density, short retention, leaving a one to 1.2 mm crown fed by effervescence, and a thick island cap. Some pieces of lacing remain as the head retracts.
Lacing – Very good. Wide band of mostly near-microscopic bubbles with a ragged upper boundary and a few small bubbles chinking the otherwise solid wall.
Aroma – 4.5 – Begins sweet and malty, followed by a slight sourness, no hops, no yeast. Remains sweet with a bit of dark fruitiness. A bit unusual for a RIS.
Flavor – 4 - Hints of chocolate and dark fruits, no hops, no yeast. No alcohol (12 % ABV, as marked on container) tase or aroma. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Never develops the slight bitterness or char of roasted malt. Remains mildly sweet throughout.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, creamy, soft but lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4 Interesting take on a RIS – slightly sweet, fruity, not bitter. Good, but certainly not what I expected.

Pours nearly jet black except with a slight reddish tint when held closer to light,a one finger tannish colored head atop.Big raisin and prune notes in the nose, underlying chocolate becomes more prominant as it warms along with a bit of roast/char.Flavors are big in the dark fruit department, definently a Belgian spin on the style, mild roast and chocolate underneath.Like others have noted big in the quad flavor category except with some roast and chocolate intertwined in it,nice to have a on a chilly day around the holidays.

Black in color, but there's definitely some light getting through the body. I'm smelling fig and chocolate. This is fairly sweet tasting with plum and fig. The mouth was sticky and chewy.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter glass
Appearance – The beer pours a dark brown color with a ruby red color tint and a small head of tan colored form. The head has a good level of retention slowly fading over time to leave a decent sum of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is strong of a cocoa aroma mixed with some aromas of dark fruit of cherry and raisin as well as a bit of prune. Along with these aromas comes some nice toasted and roasted malt smells. There is a bit of yeast and some spice of nutmeg as well as some caramel and brown sugar. Overall nice and tasty.
Taste – The taste begins with a sweeter dark fruit taste of prune, raisin, and cherry along with a bit of a roasted malt flavor. There is a bit of a cocoa taste that gets stronger and stronger as the taste moves forward. Along with these tastes comes some flavors of a light yeastiness as well as a bit of a clove spice. These tastes go to the end where they are joined by a touch of hay, leaving one with a fruity and lightly roasty and toasted, almost more Belgium quad like taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is light for a 12 % brew with a carbonation level that is rather high and effervescent. Overall the feel is great and makes for a easy sipping brew that matches the nice blend of fruit, dark, Belgium spice, and sugar.
Overall – A very tasty brew. It is very quad like in nature with a bit of a roasty and cocoa taste. Not surprisingly for Gulden Draak, but this is a very enjoyable brew overall!

L - dark amber brown at the start to a think black. More closely resembles a quad than a stout. One finger of dark brown head.

S - sweet, dark fruit, mild chocolate. Again, resembles a quad.

T - I’ll say it again, quad. Classic quad flavors, with maybe a little bit of bitter coffee towards the end as it got warmer.

F - light carbonation, with think coaching. Very nice.

O - got this beer in a sampler pack, with I could find it just by itself. If you like quads with a little spin on a stout you’ll enjoy this beer.
