After spending the Saturday on a rather hectic Pub Crawl in Sheffield, I spent Sunday doing some local Pubs. One of my friends offered to drive, so we headed out to the Angler’s Retreat at Wintersett. It is a country pub between the small villages of Ryhill & Crofton.

A really friendly ‘locals local’ that is frequented by regulars from nearby villages, outsiders from the nearby Towns/Cities, plenty of outdoors type people including Anglers, Walkers & Bird Spotters a.k.a. “twitchers” from the nearby Country Park. It makes for a great mixed clientele. They all come for the hospitality, location & of course, the Beer.

Real Ales features prominently here. There are 4 Regular Beers; the popular Barnsley Bitter, the highly excellent & rarely seen in the Free Trade Samuel Smiths Old Brewery Bitter & the widely available (but good) Theakstons XB Bitter & (average) John Smiths. In addition to these they usually offer 1 Guest Beer, often from an unusual source. On my visit it was Barnsley IPA which was excellent, as was the Sam’s OBB (Mmm!). 5 Handpump Real Ales for a Country Pub is rare enough, but for what is basically a two-roomed affair, it is quite some achievement.

There is a large outside drinking area to the left, & Benches at the front of the Pub. A brick porch front entrance leads to the darkened interior which has a real stone-flagged floor. The bar is at the back of the Pub, set to your right front & nearby there is a Real Fire. The front room is to your immediate right, & the lounge of to your left at the back of the Pub. It can get very busy on hot weekends.

One unique feature that of the Bar is that fact that there is a window on the right hand side of the Pub that opens at just the right height behind the bar. Regulars leave their empties on the window sill, & when the Landlord has time, he replenishes the contents – words are rarely exchanged – this serving hatch is strictly for the locals!

The Angler’s Retreat is one of those rare things these days, one of those out-of-the-way great Country Pubs that do not benefit from what can loosely be termed as a “passing trade”. Many have closed, yet somehow the Angler’s retains a solid local & tourist trade, good beer turnover & hence the ability to keep & serve several Real Ales in top form plus a Guest Beer. It’s nice to get out from the Town & City to the Country sometimes for a “few jars” on sunny days – and this is one of the best places to do it around the Wakefield district.
