When I lived in England, I often went walking on Sundays. Starting early we would walk for a good 3+ hours to build up a thirst, & somehow we would always just happen to be in the area of a great Pub come midday to slake it.

South Yorkshire has some relatively ‘unknown’ great Country Pubs. The George & Dragon is one of the best of these. Its location in the heart of the picturesque village of Wentworth makes it a popular destination for many locals, weekend drinkers & walkers - so it can be busy at times.

Set back from the road (Main Street) that runs through the village, this gives it the perfect opportunity to make use of the room in front of the Pub for wooden benches, great for the Summer. The oldest part of this lovely looking Stone Pub dates from the 16th Century, but it has been gradually expanded & added to over the last 300+ years, which adds to its classic looks. Stooping as you enter the low ceiling main bar, you cannot help but notice the classic Yorkshire Stone Flagged Floor, it is original & a highly prized architectural feature of the Pub.

The Cask Beer Range is healthy. Regular beers are Timothy Taylors Landlord & Wentworth Pale Ale plus the "Coors/Burton-upon-Trent" version of the once locally brewed Stones Bitter. All of which are great value for money, & they are served in the best of condition. Also serves several Guest Beers which vary & are normally from micro-breweries. On my last visit they were all from the Wentworth Brewery, but as they produce some excellent beers, including the awesome Oatmeal Stout, I was not complaining. The beers are all well priced considering the up-market area & there is always a Real Cider on sale, as well as a good range of Single Malts & Wines.

Food is a prized feature of the George & Dragon. Quality homemade food is served at Lunchtimes & in the Evenings. The excellent Sunday Lunches are well known far a field. I usually have one of the monstrous Sandwiches here with my Ale. The focus on quality food has continued with some expansion recently, they have now opened up a Steak & Seafood Restaurant on the first floor.

The George & Dragon has a classic English Pub name to match its equally classic English country looks set as it is, amidst a lovely stone village. It has taken several CAMRA Awards in the last few years, which were all well-deserved. My first beer on many Sunday Real-Ale Rambles was here. Sundays spent walking with friends, the superb quality beer & food here, are both dearly missed.
