There are 2 questions that are continually asked, “What is the meaning of life”, & “Why the hell don’t Samuel Smiths make more of their beers available in cask-conditioned format?”. I will most likely die before both these questions are answered.

Sam Smiths only make one beer available in Cask format; it is called Old Brewery Bitter (also known as OBB).

Whilst back in the UK at Easter, I really fancied a good pint of Sam Smiths OBB from the cask. There are not many Sam Smiths Pubs near me, but the Old Hall is not too far away, & is always worth a visit for several pints of this classic Yorkshire Bitter.

It is true to say that Sam Smiths have some of the most historic Pubs in England in their Estate. The Old Hall is certainly no exception. Dating from 1472, yes 14-72! (anywhere else & they would have turned this into a Museum, never mind a Pub), it just oozes history. Indeed, Joseph Priestly (he of Oxygen fame, once lived here). Altered little over the years, it still retains many original timber features, & even a stunning carved Royalist acorn wooden ceiling in the ‘Great Hall’ part of the pub. It is one of only four remaining Aisled Manor Houses in the UK, & no surprise then that it is has Grade I Listed status.

Inside, it serves a cracking Pint of hand-pulled Sam’s cask OBB. It has a large No-Smoking area (I enjoyed this rare UK feature) & an outside drinking area. It serves Lunchtime & Evening Meals, I tried neither on my visit, but I know from my Parents that the food here is excellent. But I just come for the beer.

It goes without saying that I am biased, and a big fan of Sam’s cask OBB; it is brewed with their own well water, no adjuncts & fermented in Yorkshire Squares. OBB is still shipped out to their Estate in wooden casks, all maintained by Sam’s own Brewery-based Cooper. I believe it is this unparalleled combination of factors that all contribute to create a marvelously unique malty bitter.

Well the Old Hall only serves one Cask beer, & as such it will never break any BeerBar records. But you have to remember that finding a great pint of cask Samuel Smiths OBB, is not as easy as it used to be. This is certainly one place that I highly recommend to sample the fine, highly quaffable, cask OBB, at a great price, in stunning surroundings. (hence 3 for selection).

“So, why the hell don’t Samuel Smiths make more of their beers available in cask-conditioned format?” well, perhaps because we just wouldn’t be able to handle it!!!
