even though its the biscuit thats getting all the attention, this is a world class brown ale, and was my personal favorite from our visit here. this beer is wonderful, of the highest quality, and plenty darn distinct in a category that has really become kind of bland and samey in the american craft seen. obligatory brown ale at some random taproom, this is anything but. brewed with a large selection of specialty malts and house roasted pecans, it really is something quite special. chestnut brown color to it, with an airy tan head on top, crystal clear and on the lighter side of the color spectrum for the style. bran muffin, dry cocoa, toffee, and fresh cereals on the nose, with a toasted and sweeter side, possibly a pinch of rye in here as well. the pecans are subtle in the flavor, seeming to add to the body and the smoothness as much as the flavor, where they have a pleasant earthy richness that is wonderfully compatible with all the grain, never becoming sweet. the chocolate malt is light for a brown ale, but comes through really well. it feels hearty and healthful and has all kinds of malt nuance, but the beer remains very clean and drinkable, almost to an unimaginable degree for how flavorful it is. i had this with their mole, and the combination of cocoa and spice in the dish was just perfect for this beer,it did not overwhelm it. i liked all the beer here, but this was both the most inventive as well as (for me anyway) the most enjoyable. one of the best brown ales ive had in a really long time.
