Style: English Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our most popular beer, Legend's is a full bodied version of a British Brown Ale. Expect a rich, malt-forward brew with a beautiful mahogany tone. Generous amounts of specialty malts bring flavors of sweet caramel, toasted nuts, coffee, and molasses, all perfectly balanced by a steady but cautious hop dryness. Fruity undertones provided by our house yeast strain bring the final flavor element to round out this world class ale.

Appearance – Four finger head on a clear ruby red body.

Aroma – Rich malt and brown bread, slightly boozy.

Taste – Strong malt and brown bread, molasses, slightly sweet.

Mouthfeel – Somewhat thick for a brown ale, but this one was 6 years old.

Overall – Very good, almost seemed like a barrel-aged beer.

They keep calling this "...perfectly balanced..." Sorry, not. There are too many flavors and things going on w/this beer (read the desc below...you kidding me?) to pull off...and they proved it. I like Legends but this beer is highly overrated by most; don't get the appeal at all. I tried it recently for the first time in a long time...will probably be my last. It just doesn't work.

L) Pours a dark amber/brown hue with a large, creamy off-white head with good retention and lacing. Swirls with a full body.

S) The smell is nice. Has a pleasant nuttiness and light toffee. Ever so slight resin notes can be picked up behind the malt. A slight metallic presence can be noted on the nose as well.

T) The palate is dominated by slightly bitter and roasty toffee. It is quite nice, but again, a slight metallic taste is present detracting from the overall experience.

F) I quite enjoy the mouth-feel on this one, it is very creamy for a brown. Medium carbonation and a crisp nature.

O) This is a great go to brown, hopefully at some point the slight metallic note will be gone from the brew.

My last bottle from the six-pack I picked up a while back when thinking "hey, I haven't had a brown ale in a while." Wasn't able to find a bottled-on or best-by date, but since these were in refrigeration at a grocery store that hadn't previously carried them I'm not worried about age.

This is a very nice-looking beer -- deep dark reddish-brown, with a huge layer of light tan foam on top (that may be partly due to how I poured it, but the fact that it's sticking around afterward points toward it being a feature of the beer itself that I might've amplified a little by pouring faster than usual.) Very clear, with rising bubbles visible when held up to the light. The foam leaves a good bit of lacing at first, but it fades after a bit.

Smell is light, but pleasant -- toasty, maybe a little sourdough-esque. Definitely malty rather than hoppy, like you would expect for a brown ale (especially one described as more traditional British style rather than a hopped-up American version.) After taking a few sips, I'm noticing a bit of a caramelly sort of thing blended in with the previously mentioned smells. Definitely adds some richness to the previously kinda faint smell of the beer, and reminds me a bit of some of the English ales I've had, which would make sense as this is described as an English-style brown ale.

Taste is similar to the smell initially, but noticeably richer right away -- the malt is really nice in this beer, with several different flavors mingling together. Toasty bread, the almost sourdough thing noticed in the smell, and a bit of an almost dry-leaves sort of thing (maybe almost tea-like now that I think about it?) that makes this feel even more appropriate for a late-fall/early-winter night. A bit of sweetness to it from the malt (that almost caramel-like thing is present here, maybe not quite as present as in the smell though) but overall pretty dry. Around the halfway point I'm getting hints of something almost woody. Flavors don't linger for long after a drink.

Mouthfeel is pleasant, light enough to be drinkable but substantial enough to not feel anywhere near watery and leave a bit of a lingering feeling in the mouth afterward. Carbonation is noticeable but not harsh/prickly.

This is one of those beers where the whole seems to be greater than the sum of its parts -- so I put my "overall" score higher than any of the main scores. Definitely worth picking up a six-pack!

Legend Brewing Co. "Brown Ale"
on tap @ Murphys Grand Irish Pub, Virginia Beach,VA
$5 / pint

Notes: Clear mahogany brown beneath a creamy head of off-white. Excellent head retention and lacing. Clean, fresh aroma of lightly chocolatey and golden caramelish malt. The flavor follows with little variation but greater depth; the addition is its mildly leafy and grassy hops. Mildly bitter but still mostly dry in the finish. Short lingering notes of light milk chocolate, medium caramel, and floral/leafy hops in the finish.

Currently my 6th favorite beer is this English Brown Ale brewed in Richmond, VA. I've only had it in a bottle, so I look forward to trying it on Draft;)
