Style: Hefeweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
True to style German Hefeweizen. Wild Warthog is made with German Grains, Hops, and Yeast. Expect a light bodied beer with the yeast produced flavors of banana and clove along with a hazy appearance due to suspended yeast and protein. Literal translations of the German word hefeweizen is hefe=yeast and weizen=wheat.

A - Exactly as one would expect from a Hefe Weizen and its not German!

S - Again this was hitting the right notes, wheaty and fruity.

T - Pleasingly fruity, little bitterness.

M - Good carbonation and very smooth.

D - A second is almost a necessity.

Of the beers I tried at the Tampa Bay Brewing Co I enjoyed this the most.

Enjoyed on-tap at the brewpub. Above-average, creamy mouthfeel, a lacey hefy with a wheat aroma. Cloudy bananna colour. Cloves. Suitable carbonation, though it is above average.High in pilsner malt. This batch listed at 5.2%. A sourness though really sweetened with sugar, malt.

Description says it is made with 60% german malted wheat and you can definitely tell. The beer was a cloudy, tawny, light yellow with a good head that stayed all the way down. I wasn't able to get many aromas as this was served with a lemon that I didn't ask for already in it. Tastes of banana, yeast and light cloves were evident and accentuated by the lemon. Fairly highly carbonated beer with a good body to it. Avery drinkable beer. If I didn't have to leave I may have been sitting there all night drinking it. Wow, this is probably one of the best american hefe's I've had to date. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who visits this place. The food was not the greatest I have ever had, although I would be willing to give them another chance, but the beer quality and selection were both awesome.

Cloudy yellow color, nice foamy head. Faint smells of citrus, yeast, and bananas noticable. Taste was very good and balanced, nice smooth banana, clove, and slight citrus taste. Very crisp and dry finish. Slightly watery feel, lacked the yeasty thick full bodied goodness of a hefe. I think maybe being on tap, it doesn't get the yeasty swill finish, is this possible ? All in all, really refreshing and tasty, a good version for a brewpub. But not as good as the big boys.

Excellent, refreshing example of a hefeweizen. Hazy, pale golden color. Slight bit of sediment as expected. Creamy two finger head that fades quickly but leaves sea foam lacing.

Fresh lemon zest floats from a bready background with hints of black pepper and clove. Fruity notes with faint bannana hints.

The flavor is bready, grainy, and earthy with spicy notes of black pepper, clove and ginger. Bright fruit notes of lemon with bubblegum hints.

Crisp, thin, light, grainy and refreshing like a hefeweizen should be.

Overall, an excellent, refreshing example of the style.

Good x 5. Nice yellow color. Simple cloudiness hangs around under the thick white crown.
Curry (?), some pepper, orange, banana and lemon (she didn't put one in so I'm thankfull but I wouldn't care). Big aroma for a hefe.
Taste and mouthfeel are refreshing, and clean. Lemons, orange, and a mild malt undertone with a smooth grasp of hops following through. Slick but dissappated fast leaving anticipation for another drink. Too easy to gulp 3 more of these without paying attention.

First had: on tap at the brewpub in Tampa

Somewhat hazy pour, banana yellow, with a small white head that retained well and left a bit of lacing on the glass. Usual aroma suspects: wheat, banana, clove, all in light quantities, but nothing really "off." Similar in the taste, wheat, banana, clove, light citrus notes, sugar sweetness. Light body, fairly drinkable, not great, but not too bad overall, and one of the better brews I had at TBBC.

Aroma: pungent banana (too much to be only yeast oriented... did they supplement this with banana extract?), some breadiness, some clove

Appearance: straw color, reasonably cloudy. Despite the 60% wheat malt content it had LOW head retention (even with a dirty glass, it should have held up better). The bartender served this with a lemon wedge stuck on the glass... that's their practice, I guess... I removed it as soon as he put the beer down in front of me.

Flavor: Bananas and... mustard?!? That was my initial sense, really (and I wasn't even eating anything, let alone mustardy). Bananas and mustard slathered on fresh, peasant bread and sprinkled with some lemon juice. Has a tart, dry finish.

Mouthfeel: light-bodied and tight, spritzy carbonation.

If you've never tasted anything from this brewery, try something besides this one. I tried the casked One Night Stand Pale Ale and was happy with it.

Poured on-tap at the Tampa Bay Brewing Co brewery in Ybor City. The beer was served in a pint glass, and it is an opaque, pale, creamy yellow coloring with plenty of sediment and a thin film of head that clings well to the glass. The beer has a light nose that is bready and slightly clove spiced. Flavors are heavy floral and lemon tart that is so strong it's almost syrupy. Tartness becomes bitter on the aftertaste; almost astringent. The body is pretty smooth to begin with, but finishes with a spicy, crisp, dry bite.

Had a pint with dinner at the Tampa Bay Brewing Co. brew pub in Ybor City FL. Served in a chilled pint glass as a slightly hazy light gold color. Good size delicately bubbly white head with some spotty lacing.

Aroma is great. has it all....astringent, bananas, cloves, a little lemon, mild wheat bitterness.

Taste is good, but no match for the promise of that smell. Some hefe aspects, but it is more lemon zest and wheat without much of the complexity the other flavors could bring. This is still a tasty beer but not a great hefeweizen.

Mouthfeel is a hair light but the beer is still crisp and inviting.

I enjoyed it with food on a warm Tampa December night. I would enjoy several of these on a hot night.

As expected, it was very hot & humid in Tampa (early August). After walking around Ybor a bit, I was ready for a refreshing beer.

This was served in standard shaker oint, It is a hazy dark yellow with a bone white head.

It has a big banana nose with some clove and allspice in the background.

Wow, lots of spice in the taste. I like the clove, pepper and allspice. It overpowers the grains. Maybe a bit unbalanced, but still tasty.

The mouth is slick and slightly oily.

I like the amped up spices, but it is a one and done for me.
