Enjoyed on-tap at the brewpub. Jet black with whitish topping, lots of lace. Above average carbonation. Very well roasted, so how you like the roastiness is how you like the porter.Chocolate malting, northern and cascade hops.I do not know about coffee, and OK on quaffability.

First had: on tap at the brewpub in Tampa

Dark brown-black pour, with a small khaki-colored head; moderate retention and lacing. Roasty aroma, dark malts and coffee. No surprises here. Taste of dark roasty malts, cocoa powder, mild earthy hop notes. Medium body. Pretty basic, sub-homebrewy, and a bit bland overall. Sample-worthy, but nothing more (sums up about all TBBC beers).

Poured on-tap at the Tampa Bay Brewing Co brewery in Ybor City. The beer was served in a pint glass, and it pours a dark, deep brown/black color with ruby highlights and a thin film of head. Roasted coffee and light molasses aromas, with a slight overall roasting character. The flavors are dark roasted coffee with slight smoking and toasting. The beer has nutty sweet undertones, and a slight bittering that balances everything very well. Smooth and mid-bodied, with a dry-roasted aftertaste. The finish is a little dry, but aromatic of roasted coffee grounds and sweet dark chocolate. Good lacing on the glass. Tasty beer!

Served on-tap in a clear pint glass

A: Thick ruby-brown with thin tan head and minimal retention and lacing not unlike most porters

S: Plenty of toasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and mild licorice smells

T: Deep toasted malt flavor with pleasant sweet chocolate and coffee contributions. Mild hops bitterness to smooth out the sweetness. Minimal acrid character which I liked and helps the drinkability.

M: Smooth and creamy with nice carbonation and pleasant sweet toasted malt and chocolate aftertaste.

D: Sweet without feeling or tasting syrupy, the low acridity lends this to be a sessionable porter.

My favorite TBBC brew.

A: Pours a nice dark blackish brown with a nice solid khaki colored head. Good retention with nice chunks of lace.

S: Nice dark malt aromas with hints of coffee, chocolate, and a touch of smoke.

T: Tasty porter no doubt. Nice roast malt and coffee up front. Light smoke mixes with tones of chocolate. The finish is nicely hopped with a blast of bitter.

M: Medium in body, smooth, and drinkable.

D: I like to enjoy several pints of this one everytime I drop by TBBC.

Pours a very dark brown with garnet throughout. A good-sized, off-white head with decent retention thatcleaves some lace behind.
Smellier roasted malt, hops and caramel.
Taste is roasted malt, toasty, hops, caramel, vanilla and coffee.
Medium bodied with a medium effervescence forward, smooth finish. Slightly dry. Good stuff and quite quaffable if you will pardon the pun.

Made with British 2-row pale, Crystal, Carapils, Chocolate and Black Patent malts. Willamette and Cascade hops.
Clear, dark mahogany with a light-tan head. Good retention and lacing. Aroma of chocolate, smoke, vanilla, muskmelon-very nice. Taste is pretty good..fruity and similar to Bell's in some ways, husken with a light chalk note, mildly sweet hint of alcohol that becomes more pronounced as it warms. Finish is roasted, sharp, burnt, and lightly astringent with dry, roasted husk character. Mouthfeel is unusally acidic owing to the Cascade hops and medium bodied. An overall good porter.

As with most beers at this nice brewpub, the beer was served in a standard pint glass. It is almost an opaque brown with light tan head. Good lacing.

Nose of brown sugar, and roasted grains.

The taste is of heavily roasted almost smoky grains, molasses and something earthy. The flavors melded together well.

The mouth starts fine but thins a bit in the end. A nice porter that went well with my meatloaf (made with beef & pork and wrapped in bacon!).

I got this on-tap in Ybor. Poured black (but when held to light you can see it was a deep brown). Coffee colored lacing that slowly disapated to thin layer that stayed until the last sip.

Smell is all roasted malt's,a second inhale gave the smokiness, very feint aroma's of bitter chocolate and coffee.

Taste is pretty much the same as the smell only it get's stronger with every sip, The roasted maltiness kick's you right in the chomps until you crave more.

Mouth is silky smooth with a full body a great carbonation, didn't go flat like alot of darker brews have.

Drink is good but it is a little heavy to have a session going but easily drinkable for the occassion.

A- a deep, deep brown, with only a hint of light getting through when held to the light. Also sports a nice big creamy tan head

S- nice roasted malt aroma (mostly coffee) with some notes of alcohol sweetness

T- the same big roast notes from the aroma, but better defined. Distinct coffee and hints of chocolate.

M- nice and smooth.

O- a really, really good porter

Dark brown, almost black with two finger tan head, nice retention, and sea foam lacing.

The aroma is balanced with roasted malts, coffee and dark chocolate, dark sugars, molasis and brown sugar with vanilla hints and earthy notes.

The flavor is nicely balanced with coffee and chocolate notes, brown sugar and a nice bittering balance.

Prickly, medium bodied, and smooth. Slightly overcarbonated for the style.

Overall, very easy drinking, sessionable porter

Served in a pint glass. Menu stated it was 5.7% ABV:

The beer was a deep black with an off white, almost cream colored head that persisted for awhile before dissipating and leaving some nice lacing. There was not much of an aroma to the beer, very light malt with maybe a hint of the coffee and a little smoke. Very nice flavor, malt and coffee flavor, well done. Overall, the beer was rich, creamy, not much carbonation to it but it was very easy to drink. Maybe one of the best on tap.

I enjoyed this cask-conditioned porter as part of a large sampler at the Tampa Bay Brewing Co. I haven't had the regular tap version. But this porter is super smooth with an aroma of roasted malt that makes way to a great flavor of roasted malt without tannins or other harsh flavors. A deft hand must have been used when brewing this. The mouthfeel is glass-like, even slick. It is very good. Try this porter if you can.

On-tap poured into a 4 oz. tasting glass.

A: Deep browinsh black with a wet sand colored head that retained well and left strong lace.

A: A little light here, but I did get some nice coffee, chocolate, and roasted malts. I think if I were to drink this out of a regular pint the aroma would have come off better.

T: Again chocolate and coffee. The roadted malts really shine. There is a subtle earthy hop presence toward the finish, that tries to balance the beer.

M&D: This is one of the more smooth Porters I have had, low carbonation and medium body. Excelent drinkability due to the 5.7% ABV and the smoothness. Overall, IMO, the third best beer at TBBC. A must have. Skal.

Pours a dark red/brown color with a thin tan head and spotty lacing. Smells of roasted nuts, chocolate, dark fruit, and smoke. A good chocolate beginning with some coffee notes and a good hop bitter finish. Medium in body with good carbonation, smooth. Easy to drink, one of the best beers from TBBC.

The aroma is right to style with toasted malt, coffee, and a hint of chocolate. The appearance is dark brown with an average head. The flavor is like the aroma. The palate is right for the style. Overall a nice porter. I would recommend this to anyone.

On tap at Tampa Bay Brewing Co. 2-17-11 Notes from phone

A- Black body with a creamy tan head

S- Brown sugar and some roasted malts as well

T- Molasses, more roasted malts. A pretty standard take on the porter

M- Full-bodied and smooth but a bit watery in the finish

D- A good example of the style but the mouthfeel makes it tough to give it a higher rating.

Pours a nice deep black with some red or brown when struck by light. Nice medium thin body with an energetic carbonation forms a nice head.

Smell is great notes of coffee, chocolate, and more roasted grain notes. Not much hops going on here.

Taste is roasty and wonderful. Dry character and clean on the finish.

Mouthfeel is rounded out nicely but thin enough to be refreshing and easy to drink.

My favorite offering at the TBBC.

Dark brown to black with a decent beige top. Stringy lace and a gentle froth left a good resin on the sides.
Nice aromas of baking cocoa, burnt nuts and just a hint of smoke. I could be wrong but I thought I smelled some vague pine and oak tones.
Flavor is rich, full and came with good strong coffee notes. Roasted nuts satisfied as a small splash of the bitter hops came in on a last bid for taste.
Not as slick as I suspected with my first glance but it wasn't dissappointing.
A very good porter, slightly sweet and a great finish. I'd love to have this again.

This is one hell of fine porter. I'll elaborate, but that's all you really need to know. A very dark brown which effectivelyt blots out the Florida sun. A persistent cocoa-colored head which yields a chocolately, slightly nutty aroma with a little smoke to boot. The flavor starts out with a quick malty sweetness that is quickly balanced by the chocolately-dark flavors and a finely-tuned hop bitterness, and a bit of piney (Simcoe?) hop flavor. Quite complex and interesting. This is a very sessionable beer, not overwhelming yet enough different flavors woven together to keep your attention pint after pint.

I had the sampler and this was the pick for the pint. Poured a nice brown and ruby red color with an off-white head. Good malt and roast aroma. The balance favored the malt, but there were enough hops to even things out nicely. The dark malts added a good body and mouthfeel to the beer.

A good solid and very easy drinking porter.

On-tap at the brewpub.

A - pours a jet black with an off-white head.

S - roasted malts, coffee, and brown sugar.

T - A great combination of roasty flavors, with dark coffee, some nuttiness, molasses, and anise. The level of sweetness is balanced by the hops. One of the better porters I've had.

M - fairly prickly carbonation. Body is not too heavy, which is nice.

Overall - one of the best porters I've had, and probably in my top five. Well done.

had a pint of this stuff a few days ago with my family while visiting for the holidays, so i'm reviewing this from memory of that single pint. both of my brothers and i ordered a pint and we all thought it was great stuff.

it was very dark with a small ring of head. tasted like roasted malt with a bit of chocolate. can't honestly remember how the mouth feel was... had the beer a few days ago and was eating while drinking it. all in all, it was a very smooth and easy to drink porter. not my favorite porter, but it is certainly a very good one. definitely worth a try if you can get in there for at least a drink. i'll be ordering another one the next time i am there without a doubt.
