I visited the Charlottesville area on a vacation with my wife recently and I wanted to find some places to pick up some local brews to bring back to PA. Although the vacation was basically a wine tasting trip, I am glad that we stopped here because I thought they had a really cool beer selection. The Belgian selection was very impressive. The had a host of trappist brews and the best selection of Cantillion I have seen in one place. Although I could not afford to get all the rarer Cantillion's they had, I got a few that were about $30 each but based on how rare they are to find I didn't think that was bad deal. I ended up leaving the place with fourteen 750ml bottles and it was well worth the trip and the money. I plan on heading back to the store my next trip through that area. I would highly recommend a stop here for some good brews. I bit hard to find but worth the trip.

The fellow that helped me with my beer selections was also the waiter at a restaurant I ate at the night before and he remembered me because I ordered a Haansen's Gueze with dinner. Good guy.

This is not a huge place, but Wine Warehouse is an accurate description, in that most of the inventory is wine and it's still in the boxes. But a couple of walls are devoted to beer, and they have a pretty extensive collection of local brews. I had no trouble finding a dozen fairly local beers that were new to me, which wasthe whole reason for stopping. The staff could not have been more helpful. Zero ambience, but I don't go to a warehouse to hang out. Definitely worth a stop if you're in Charlottesville.

This is primarily a wine discounter, so when you walk in there are just stacks of boxes of wine forming aisles in the store. Half of the back and one side of the store are shelves of beer. Good selection, particularly if you are looking for more local beers. There are some of the major breweries, noted Stone, Lagunitas, Evil Twin, and Founders. Not so much Sierra Nevada. Some decent variance in choice, some older IPAs on the shelves. Staff was very friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to help look for what you wanted. Did take note that they said they are leaning away from West Coast breweries to focus more and more on closer breweries. From what I have seen of the area, the best selection this side of C'ville.

V: This isn't the biggest place ever, and most of its square footage is crammed with wine, but they manage to stock some good beers. It's not exactly a visually stylish place, but that makes little difference.

Q: Wine Warehouse has a good quality array of beers. you won't find any macrobrewery nonsense around here.

S: I didn't really ask many questions of the store employee who was there, but he was friendly an attentive nonetheless.

S: A very nice selection of beers. Lots of Virginia brews on display (Hardywood, Three Notch'd, Adroit Theory, Champion), some national (The Bruery, Lagunitas, Cascade, Great Lakes), and a lot of international beers as well. In general, this is a well chosen selection. They pack a lot into their relatively small beer area.

This is an excellent store. The only reason it does not get a higher rating is because it is wine-centric (which I don't personally think is a flaw) and the selection is kind of confusing to peruse. Less beer than other stores I visited, but much higher quality to quantity ratio. They sell singles, and lots of them. They have limited releases and small, lesser known brands along with all the obligatory commercial successes. They have a friendly staff who knows the beer. This was one of the quickest and easiest purchase experiences I've had at a beer store while traveling, and not because I was disappointed. I purchased about a case of beer and every one was a winner, something not widely available, or something interesting. Nice job, guys.

Great place to get beer in Charlottesville, always seems to have great selection of the standard East Coast fare (Bell's, Founders, DFH, Oskar Blues, etc.) and their mailing list is fantastic for getting easy access to whales and rarer beers. They really do a great job of getting special stuff in from local breweries like 3 Brothers and Champion when they come out with something new, so it's great to see them supporting local craft. Knowledgeable staff, always ask if you need some help and more than willing to talk beer at the register.

A little tricky to get to...if you're heading north on 29, you have to bang a right at Hydraulic Rd. (and not before the light at the Kroger entrance) and then look for the sign and the driveway on the right. Very friendly, more of a wine store than a beer store as the name indicates, but good selection nonetheless. We were offered a sampling of three wines before browsing. The website says that the store is kept at 55-60 degrees to maintain freshness; I didn't have a thermometer or look at the thermostat, but it felt warmer than that to me. All the Maine Brewing Co. beers are kept in a fridge, and everything else is out on a shelf. Pretty tightly packed, so you have to do some maneuvering, especially if you're picking up more than a six-pack. Pretty solid selection of Belgians and good American craft stalwarts (Bell's, Stillwater). Some of the stock appears a bit old -- discovered a few New Belgian offerings that were about three months past their best-by date.

Great bottle shop to hit while you're headed to the airport....so I did. Inside you will see a large selection of wine and a quite a decent selection of craft beer. Immediately a young man who was quite knowledgeable about beer styles and local brews was there to help. Without a lot of room in my bags, I selected a few local IPA's to haul and try at my next city. Quite a variety of stuff from the east coast, midwest and some good names from the left coast too. Lots of bombers as well. They let me buy singles, which was awesome, highly recommend this place.

Fantastic beer selection (Belgians, various other imports, American micro-brews, etc.). The temperature is cool, which is perfect for storing beer, and which immediately tells you something about the quality of the place, and how seriously the proprietor, Matt, takes things. The entire staff is knowledgeable, though Matt, in particular, has a spectacular knowledge of most anything beer related, and is always extremely helpful. You can mix your own six-packs on most anything in the place. My favorite beer store in Charlottesville. Highly recommended.

Reviewed after about 10 visits

When I first found this place I fell in love so didn't feel it was time to write a review. However after a good number of return visits I am still enamored and really enjoy each subsequent visit just as much.

They have a large range of Belgians and a nice selection of American beers. The layout is very well done and the ability to take singles if needed is great. I'm always surprised or intrigued by something new I see in there and have yet to be disappointed. Matt is the man who does the beer ordering and is super knowledgeable. He taste's about everything that comes in the door so he can answer almost any question. They also are more than willing to order something they don't have if its in stock from the distributor.

They have tastings and also have a few food events throughout the months as well.

In general this is a great store with a nice selection and great staff to maintain it. A first and regular stop for me when looking for good beer!

Visited this place while passing through Charlottesville on our way to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. We were unfortunate to get there a few minutes after they closed, which was a surprise since it was 7:30 on a Friday. Luckily, a kind employee saw us and allowed us a quick through the store.

The craft selection is off to the right with a nice selection of U.S. stuff as well as plenty of imports, especially Belgian beer. Nice showing of Drie Fonteinen Oude Gueuze, and at really nice pricing. The U.S. selection was quite impressive, as they still had Firestone Abacus and Parabola, the former of which went in a day or so in Northern Virginia. Other than that, lots of standard distribution stuff, but they had it all, so no complaints there.

All in all, I'd certainly head back to this place to pick up some Belgians as well as to see what limited-release stuff they might still have.

After 3-4 visits its time to reviews.

The atmosphere here is wine and beer store modern and one thing I like about it is that they keep the temperature inside the building very cool so that the beverages are at or close to cellar temperature. The could be a bit more careful about exposure of the beer to light, but I've seen worse.

They person who does the beer selection knows his stuff and they have a wide range of things I've wanted to buy. Most all of the beers on offer are from the best breweries, even the local stuff. (I've only spotted beer from one local brewery here and it is definitely the one I think is best.)

The staff are helpful but not pushy and willing to take time to talk, etc. On one visit bought enough that they volunteered at 10% discount.

There is a very large selection here and the beers on offer range from some of the best Belgians through the best of Britain and some first rate US craft breweries.

On the whole I've found the prices reasonable in that they are competitive with other stores that have a wide range of beers on offer, and I don't think I've ever felt I over paid on anything I bought. (Naturally I'd have liked to pay less, but who wouldn't?)

For me this is a must visit place when I have to be in C-ville for any length of time.
