Notes: The progenitor of our series of stouts, Darkling is smooth yet rich with chocolate notes running the gamut from milk to dark to baker’s. A velvety elixir with a hint of espresso accents to balance.

Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque in the glass with a one finger dark khaki head that slowly dissipates to a thin cap with light lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt with light char, cocoa and a touch of coffee. Flavor is dark toasted malt with light to moderate char, dark chocolate and mild dark stone fruit; coffee and chocolate finish. Medium bodied with moderate creaminess. It's nice to sit down with a classic Russian imperial stout with no barrel ageing nor adjunct flavorings. Not that I don't like the latter, but my project to try as many new stouts as I can means that see the classics more rarely now and many pastry and BA stouts are one-offs. Bottom line, this is a very nicely made and traditional dark stout in the Russian imperial style. The tastes starts a little thin for the style, but finishes with a satisfying and completely authentic burst of chocolate and coffee malt. It's nice to remember that these flavors can be drawn from roasted malt alone. Excellently brewed and flavorful. Revision knows its stouts; I will pick this up again when it shows up.

On tap. Surprisingly smooth, moderately sweet, nice cocoa character, smooth milk chocolate, some dark fruit…very velvety mouthfeel, thick and full bodied. Invisible alcohol. Creamy. Strong non-BA non-adjunct offering here. Solid.

From tasting notes 10/02/18
Had on-tap at Round Table Clubhouse in Citrus Heights, CA

Appearance - Served up in a 11.5oz snifter, black with cola brown edging. Mostly barren surface with a fair ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell - Chocolatey, fudgy aroma with a touch of roast and earth.

Taste - Follows the nose. Chocolatey upfront and throughout with lesser roast and a touch of nutty character. Faint dark fruit character. Finish is mostly chocolatey with fading roast notes.

Mouthfeel - Near full-bodied with fair carbonation. Slick, slightly creamy texture with a smooth, easy finish.

Overall - Good, strong flavor profile. A bit simple, but a very smooth drinker. I would drink this again, price dependent.

On tap at the brewery. Looks and smells like a proper RI stout .Taste is roasty and toasty though it seemed a bit on the mild side as it was being compared to 2 other stronger stouts. Wouldn't hesitate to drink again.
