It's in a fairly large, old building with several other businesses. Actually has a parking lot. Large open room with long tables and a good sized bar. Beertenders were helpful with good advice. Tasty beer. Only about 12-15 beers on tap. Crowlers available in the coolers, too.

I've only been to HeadFlyer Brewing once. I usually like to visit a place two or three times before writing a review, but my experience with their beer was bad enough I feel that beer savvy people should know about it.

The one good thing I can say about the place was that the beertender on my visit was good at what she did. She was friendly and quick, and that is all I really need from someone behind a bar.

Now the bad parts.

The beer: My friend and I each had two full pours, and sampled two other beers. Five had overtly noticeable flaws. A couple were diacetyl bombs, a couple were infected, one was both, and most seemed under attenuated. The one beer that was free of flaws tasted stale. Beyond the beers we tried, one of the beers on tap was a butterscotch version of one of the other beers on tap. (Did they add butterscotch, or are they actively trying to sell a beer they know is laced with diacetyl?)

The selection: They had 20 or so beers on tap (I'm not sure exactly). I would usually call that a great selection from any brewery. However, given how bad the beers we tried were I have no faith that the vast majority of the rest weren't equally as bad. 20 bad/seriously flawed beers is a bad selection.

The vibe: We where there at night, and the lighting was way too bright. I talking as bright as it is at closing time at most bars when the bartender turns the lights way up as a sign that everyone needs to get out. The patrons that were there were also of the obnoxious 'I'm from the suburbs, I don't get out much, I don't know anything about beer, I don't know my limit, and I know even less about how to behave in a bar setting' type. (We overheard one of them telling the beertender that his group had just come from Surny Brewing. The beertender tactfully asked if he meant Surly Brewing. He insisted that it was Surny, and one of the guys in his group confirmed that it was indeed Surny.) Breweries can do a lot of things that can greatly effect who their clientele will be. Making bad beer seems to draw the kind of crowd that knows nothing about beer, and acts poorly in public after consuming a little alcohol.

Overall, I won't go back to HeadFlyer until I've been convinced by people whom I resect in the Twin Cities beer scene that the quality issues I experienced have been addressed in a positive manner, and I hope they do. I don't want to see them or any other brewery fail. I simply want to see all breweries making good beer.

i liked this place a lot, surprised the cities can keep assimilating new breweries into such a busy local market, but these guys already seem to have established themselves nicely. the space is rad, lots of outside space, on the ground floor of an apartment building or something, some other businesses going in too, old brick showing but a modern decor, minimalist furniture, some neon lights around but mellow, and a really cool way to display the beers behind the bar, artistic and fun. the staff is super nice, down to earth, and generous with the samples, which is the best! folks posted up playing games on a friday night, beers flowing. they had maybe ten on, all fairly basic styles, i really enjoyed their simple pale, and the vanilla bean stout was also nice. in fact, all the beers i tasted were great. the honey ale was also nice, kind of raw and really forward with the honey. none were bad. not a ton of innovation apparent on the wall, but they are young, and i expect that to come. seems like they are off to a great start, and i am looking forward to seeing what happens next! their beers are good, their space is unique and relaxed, and its a great spot to post up and have a few. ill be back next time i am in the cities! very friendly crew in here!

Wow does this brewery have a great vibe/location, to the SW you have the Minneapolis skyline and to the NE you have freight trains slowly lumbering by, i like both looks. HF is located in the Miller Textile Building and occupies about 9000 sf of a building that housed Miller Bag for over a century. The brewery itself is beautiful. in side you have a large open bar area with farm style tables actually made from the floors of this building, another small seating area in front of a walled fireplace they also have large windows that allow alot of natural light in ...outside you have a nice patio with several tables , back inside the tanks are also visible to the side rear behind big windows, the brewery makes use of the original stone, brick, and wood columns both historic and beautiful.. they also built the table,s out of re-use wood floor's. HF has 5 beers on tap to start, they want to go to 8 then 13 or so with flagship and rotation brews. I sampled all 5 brews several were good 1 or 2 need some work, but hey this is day 1. their location and brewery is superb and the brews are good and they have around 84 parking spaces. I expect great things from this brewery and will go back for sure.
