look: 3.5 | smell: 1.5 | taste: 1 | feel: 1 | overall: 1

Pours a clear golden range color with yellow hues and a two finger frothy white head that slowly fades into a thin, lasting ring. Spots of soapy lacing left behind.

Earthy aroma with grassy hops along with some oak and buttery diacetyl presence which is really unpleasant. Lots of pale malts underneath with hints of light fruit.

Medium bodied with a very unpleasant combination of flavors. There's some faint grassy hops and a very strong cider/apple flavor that is extremely unpleasant. The dacetyl presence from the aroma is also prominent with some of the oak character as well. There's a lot going on here and none of it is good. Drain pour.

Reviewed on 9/5/08. Bottle. Pours a light yellow with a small foamy white head. Aroma of wheat and light spices (pepper). Flavor of stale wheat and cardboard. This isn't very good. It just doesn't have any flavor.

Looks like a pilsener, golden and clear. Nose is a bit... off. A bit of an old sneaker thing going on underneath a hoppy scent. Taste is pungent... almost a rubbing alcohol flavor. Sour. Mouthfeel is thin, watery, and not very pleasant. I guess I can see others liking this, but I don't dig it. Everything about it, save appearance, is off.

A slightly cloudy mid gold coloured beer, with a white scummy head, being maintained by a dull bubble.
This just doesnt look appealing.
There is a lot of bscuity malt sweetness on the nose which is not particularly exciting.
Blandness is the hallmark of this beer. The biscuity malt predominates all else and there is really not much else to it.
It is thick and oily orallyand very little carbonic tingle0Very middle of the road.
A somewhat disappointing beer this , as it is dull and offers no excitment at all .

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

A - Pours a nice transparent amber color with a nice head and a decent amount of lacing for a pils.

S - Noble hops covering a malty skunkiness. Not so good. Lots of metallic stuff going on here.

T - Average. A bit a spicey Noble hops and a malt profile that is very light. Skunk is there, but not as much as in the smell. Finishes a tad bitter, which actually helps.

M - Thin, even by pilsner standards.

D - OK. Would be a decent quencher, but it isn't great.

Medium amber with bleached blond edges. The eggshell white cap is so tight-bubbled that it looks like a sponge. I haven't seen much glass coverage yet since the head has barely fallen, but it doesn't look to be a lace monster... or even a lace mouse as it turns out.

Pils smells more like a Euro pale lager than it does a pils. There's a fair amount of stale, musty grain and very little noble hoppiness. In fact, if the beer tastes like it smells, the brewery has no business calling it a pilsener at all.

It's an EPL all right. Either I got an old bottle (I have no idea what a dating code of '88 10 50' means) or Brauerei Schwelm and I have vastly different ideas about what constitutes a pilsener. The beer is acceptably balanced between malt and hops, but that has more to do with a sweet-bitter balance than it does with malt and hop flavor per se.

Like the nose, the flavor profile consists of stale grain and stale hops. In fact, the beer is so flat and lifeless on the palate that it makes me think of something produced by a second-rate brewery in Romania or Bulgaria. A metallic flavor gains strength as I drink, rather than fading as is usually the case. I can't believe this is the same brewery that puts out such a good hefe weizen.

The mouthfeel is as lackluster as the flavor. Thin and bordering on watery, it's unable to sustain any flavor permanance. Come to think of it, that's a good thing. A lack of carbonation is entirely in keeping with rest of the beer's attributes, sorry to say.

Schwelmer Pils is, by far, my least favorite of the three Schwelmer beers that I've had to date. It's a Euro pale lager in pils clothing and isn't a very good one of those. Weizen is a keeper, Bernstein (a Vienna lager) is okay and this one is a dud.

Head froths and goes. Aroma has sweet qualities with some noble charactiersitics but comes and goes. The flavour says that there was a harmonoius balance here once but I joined them at the end of the night where everyone is going home.

Sorry guys, this is a dud bottle of an old beer. It is still sweet and has no bad flavour, but it's lost all the right stuff. Would have been a lot better at the right time.

Serving Type: 11.2oz Grolsch bottle into glass. Served at refrigerator temperature. Bottle opened with a loud, entertaining 'pop'.

Appearance: Golden, dark straw. Little head present but this head remains for several minutes after initial pour.

Aroma: Very faint- almost no aroma at all. Closer inspection reveals faint smell of rich malt. No discernible floral (hop) aroma.

Taste: Very sweet and malty for the style. Dominant tastes: malt sugar and caramel. Thin mouthfeel contributes to a lack of any cloying sensation.

Mouthfeel: Dissipates from rich to nothing within a few seconds. With a flavor as malty as this is, more of a lingering mouthfeel would be expected and welcome. Pleasantly carbonated with very fine bubbles (Champagne-sized).

Drinkability: This beer would match very well with a hamburger or steak, unless paired with a starchy side dish such as french fries or mashed potatoes (just too much sugar to make that pairing work). By itself, this beer is reasonably underwhelming although never offensive.

Oweing much to the wonderful Grolsch bottle, I would purchase this beer again.

I see a datemark --Best before end: 88 10 50 --whatever this means.
Could this beer be 16 years past peak fresheness which 1988 would indicate? I can't tell cuz it is certainly not fresh, but I find it hard to believe it could be that old. It leaves a quick 1/2 finger cap on top of a gold-honey hue. It doesn't smell old. It has a nice malty grassy nose-metallic elements too.
Wet taste of malt and herby-grass-dry finish -a little sticky but not too strong. Has some woodiness and metal-like taste too. Not overpowering. The mouthfeel is very average and the drinkability is also.

Not bad. Little sweeter and maltier than most pils. Gives it a little outside the box character, but on the other hand, maybe not really in the right direction. Poured from the little swing top bottle that foamed over when opened with a medium white head and a tiny bit of lace. Color is a light to medium amber. Aroma is grainy, malty, hint of hop, and honey sweet. Flavor is the same but more intense. Body is decent. Interestingly, bitterness comes out more in the finish

German malt and saaz hop aroma. A soapy head with lace on light to medium yellow. Taste is smooth but it is the enigma of saaz hops that is hard on my mouthfeel. A bit light mouthfeel though not watery. Passable pils but still not the one to chase after.

Pours a bit darker than i have ever seen for a pils. It is a light amber gold with a frothy white head that dissipates leaving some lace.
The aroma is very faint but has a touch of spicy hops.
The flavor is good for a pils as it begins with a spicy almost piney hop bitterness that segues into a bready malt flavor. The balance is broken by a further hop flavor that lingers in the finish slightly. The mouthfeel is a bit thin though it is not unpleasent.
This is a nicely drinkable beer and I enjoyed it as a different example of a pils.

One of those breweries that stick with the swing top lid which is always impressive, well to some at least.

Pours clean with a decent amount of head that quickly retreats back into the body of the beer. Held up to the light this Pilsner maintains a deep amber he that could best be described as a honey color.

Very soft aroma on the nose and very little if any sent of alcohol. The taste is clean with a malt finish which I think diminishes the crispy feel you would possibly expect. Definitely suited to accompany a meal of schnitzel or bavarian sausage or a new twist on the refreshing end of the day beer.

Whilst its not going to make anyone jump up and down or change lives, it does bring a refreshingly different take on the usual Pilsner beer.

I had never tried this pilsner before, so I decided to give it a try...

A- Poured a clear golden blonde... 1 finger head... lot of carbonation... poor lacing. Great looking bottle though.

S- Malty... yeast... light light hops. Eh... light nose.

T- Malty, but not strong malt... slightly spicy... Hops pop in for a brief cameo. Overall rather watered down flavor.

M- Crisp... light light body

D- I drank a 6'er... buuuut, at no point did i really look forward to the next one. It's no Victory Prima Pils

Typical yellowy straw amber colour of the style. Very clear. Pours with a decent head but it's hard not to in a proper pilsner glass. Very thin bubbly head. Average retention above average lacing.

Grassy malt smell, floral hops with a metallic edge. Metallic in a steel keg kind of way, not in the tinny kind of way. Not bad.

Taste had an almost sweet maltiness which fades quickly into a bitter spicy hops. To my tastes was a bit overbalanced on the side of bitterness but left a very pleasing malty aftertaste in the mouth.

Lightbodied and relatively well carbonated. It's crisp but not particularly crisp for the style. Leaves a wet finish. Normally I'd expect a pilsener to be a lot drier.

Refreshing enough and light. I find the bitterness is a bit out of balance. I want a spicier bite and something drier. But the pleasing malt aftertaste makes up for it.

Wouldn't go out of my way for it but certainly would drink it if it was around. Suffers from good average foreign beer with huge boutique price syndrome where I am.

Best before 23 06 07.

Pours a light amber/honey colour. Nice rocky white head, leaving good lace.

Nice aromas of malts & grains.... a subtle, spicy note, not unlike a meat pie. Sounds strange, but that's what I pick, and it works OK.

Very malt-driven beer, more like a Northern German lager than a Pils. Nutty, dough-like. Herbal aftertaste, and a medium bitterness.

Lows: Pretty average

You gotta love the pop from the swing-top bottle. Pours clear orange with some carbonation. Nice thick fluffy white head that unfortunately fades rapidly leaving some good lacing behind. Nose of malt, slightly musty. Taste is lightly bitter, malt, and nearly-cloyingly sweet. Fairly typical pils/lager. Mouth is wet and bubbly. Finish is malt; a little sweetness lingers on the end. Drinkability is pretty average.

Overall: Meh, there’s lot’s better out there. Not impressed.

nice bottle..love those swing tops. Pale golden colour lager, bubbly white head. a surprisingly malt orientated aroma,,malty/buiscuity..there is hops though. Again in taste this has a surprising amount of malt present, though the hops appear strongly at the end. Unusually bitter after taste. Typical german pils palate.. Overall not a bad Pils, more malt sided than most, but nothing very exciting. I would probably drink again if offered.

I'm such a tool for cool gimmicks like a resealable bottle. This beer poured a golden copper color with light half-finger head. The smell is pretty sweet with some definite honey characteristics along with malts. The taste is fairly dynamic and starts off sweet and ends with a decent amount of hoppiness and a fairly clean palate with a bit of lingering bitterness. The mouthfeel is kind of watery with decent carbonation, and makes for a reasonably drinkable beer.

A- One finger head atop a rich golden color.

S- Rich floral hops, crisp pale malty aroma.

T- Crisp somewhat astringent, good balance.

M- Kinda thin even for the style.

D- Goes dwon easy, quite refreshing.

Not too shaby, but I did expect a little more out of this brewery.

Great looking and easy drinking, but this beer is just too simple. It basically tastes and smells of pilsner malts with no hint of hops. The IBUs on this sucker have to be around 2 or something. Still, it could possibly be a gateway beer and its still pleasant and entirely unoffensive. Oh yeah, and the bottle is way sweet.

Out of a flip-top bottle found near Las Guardia airport, NY this beer was a slightly hazy straw color. The white head faded quickly and left weak lacing. The aroma was of sweet pale malt and typical pilsner malt. The flavors were at first of that sweet malt but then it went very dry and grainy. There was a slightly stale and musty element to the flavor profile. The finish was crisp and acidic. The mouthfeel was slightly watery, the body light and the carbonation light but not under-carbonated.

Brilliant golden color. Wet grain, clay, and bread dough aromas. A round entry leads to a frothy medium-to-full-bodied, toasted pale malt palate with strong grain and mild, candied citrus peel flavors. Finishes with a light touch of citrusy hops. An interesting pilsner profile. This beer is excellent with pot pie, excellent with food.

.5 Liter Flip top Bottle.

Pours a gold colored beer with a fast dying head.

Smell is some sweetness, grain husk, and biscuit aroma. Some grassiness with lots of perfume from noble hops.

Taste is dry and sharply bitter in the first taste. After the first hit of the bitterness the herbal flavor of the hops comes through. Lots herbal flavor along with a faint rum flavor. This beer though is mostly strongly bitter for the style.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Drinkability? This is probably not a beer you would want to drink all night. It is sharply bitter and that would pair it well with spicy foods. This would also work well to clean the palette of food or beer flavors.
