A: Poured a cloudy, lemony-orange with a huge 3 finger creamy, eggshell white head that went the distance retention wise. When held up to the light you can see the strong vibrant nature of the drink.

S: a huge bundle of fresh banana aroma with light orange and spicy clove hints.

T: spicy cloves, fresh bananas for flavor as well fresh wheat grains. Lemon merrang, bright citrus, and fresh pears were also detected. Overall the flavor was sharp and very pronounced thanks in part to the aggressive carbonation that highlighted the yeasty nature of this beer.

M: lively providing a tingling sensation around the edges of the tongue while bringing out the yeasty and citric tones.

D: Drinkability was great making for a refreshing summer time quencher. A good example and worthy of seeking our per style.

.5 liter flip-top bottle poured into a weizen glass.

A- It had huge 3+ finger off-white head that left fluffy sticky spots on the glass. The body was a hazy and bubbly, light golden-orange.

S- It had the classic banana (as if it's been candied) and spicy clove aroma. It's a great example of the style.

T- It had more banana and spice. It was a little lighter in flavor, but it made it even more refreshing.

M- It was nice and grainy, but a little more bubbly and a bit thinner than expected.

D- It's refreshing and an easy drinker.

A - A large white head that fades quickly leaving isolated flecks of lacing sits atop a very cloudy, nearly opaque golden beer with a tint of orange brown.

S - Smells a little of a lambic funk - like lemon and horse blanket. A bit like apricot as well. I generally like that smell, but it is odd for a hefeweizen. A bit of honey is present as well, over some faint cloves.

T - A mild flavor overall, mirrors the aroma only faintly. It is a little sweet of dilute honey. There is a bit of bread flavor and a faint hint of sour apricot and a touch of horse blanket in the finish.

M - Carbonation is high with a medium body, pretty refreshing at first, but turns into an astringent parching augmented by the numbing carbonation, gums in my throat a bit. Hefeweizens generally have awesome mouthfeels, this one is pretty bad though.

D - Not that bad, the mouthfeel sucks, but the flavor is mild and the abv low. It would be easy to throw back several of these in a night. Pleasant enough that it would be worthwhile as well. It is an interesting hefe at least. I might have again - but mostly because I want more Grolsch-style bottles . . .

I went out to buy wine for my wife at a local beer and wine store when a bottle of Schwelmer Weizen caught my eyes. I confess that I only bought it because of the swing top (I wanted the bottle since I brew my own beer) and that I found a very nice beer to add to my favorite list.

A: very nice looking, naturally cloudy, beer with a whitish/opaque yellow color that looked like a lava lamp when looking through the glass against the light. Huge creamy head that stayed throughout the pleasant experience.

S: Strong sweet (fruity/clovy) scent with some citric aspects.

T: Fresh sweet malt with light flowery hop that made it taste just right. Smooth and pleasent aftertaste.

M: Medium bodied. deliciously creamy and a bit tart. Not much carbonation.

D: refreshing that went down like it was nothing. I was regretful that I didn't purchase at least another bottle to keep it going.

Poured into mini-heffe glass at 08 Long Island Micro brew festival. The gent pouring told me Schwelmer has some assoication with the Brooklyn Brewery and Garrett Fitzgerald. Appeareance was cloudy yeasty yellow with a minor head to cap but good lacing throughout. Smell has very promimennt bananas and cloves. Taste is absolutely smashing! If you thought you smells bananas, just wait till your mouth touches this spectacular hefeewiezen. Mouthfeel is even better than the aroma or taste if you can believe it quafers. The carbonation level was balances perfectly to add some tang even with the heavy sweetness and creamyness of the bananas. This is one of the best beers beyond Austria's Edele Weiss. My new top 5 Hefe's.

tried this beer on a whim, excellent taste and drinkability, very nice body with a delicate fruity flavour, not at all heavy, it did not leave the normal full almost bloated feeling from similar beers, balanced very well with steak and potato did not overpower the flavor of meal. overall a very good beer/

Appearance- Body is a fairly opaque apricot color. The head is huge, white, has decent retention. No lacing. Kots of sediment left in the bottom. Tried to get as much as I could into the glass, but that stuff is caked in hard.

Smell- Fairy wheaty, with strong banana in it. Fairly soft and mellow. Very inviting.

Taste- Good balance. Fairly wheaty, but it's not overwhelming. Good levels of a mild lemon and banana in the middle. No hops of course. Not as refreshing as other hefes, but delicious. Nice, mile lemon in the after-taste to.

Mouthfeel- Medium body (for style). Carbonation level may be a bit low, but it works with this beer.

Drinkability- Very drinkable. I like this stuff. Not the best wheat available, but easily in the top 10% overall, and top 5% for bottles.

1/2 ltr flip top picked up today at Tres Bonne Cuisine for $3.25. poured into my small weizen glass.

Nice pillowy head dies quickly leaving no lacing.. slightly hazy straw gold brew.

Aroma is more clove than banana.. fairly spicy with a good amount of wheat overtones.

Big complex hefe flavors.. plenty of wheat malt and middle of the road sweetness helps tie the bananas and cloves together very well... some lemony zing throughout. sorta creamy body with soft carbonation.. very drinkable and every bit as good as some of the bigger and more well known German hefes.

This is my first Schwelmer brew and won't be my last now that I know there is a local store that carries at least a few of them... Thanks to Barbara at Tres Bonne Cuisine.

Pours a nice hazy golden yellow color, nice carbonation, nice two-finger plus foamy white head, which leaves lots of nice sticky lacing. The nose is malty, yeasty, nice touch of spices. The taste follows the nose. Medium body. Drinkable, this is a pretty tasty Hefe, recommended.

Pours a bright cloudy golden brown color with a small pure white head that dissipated into a nice sudsy cap. The smell is of sharp wheat malt, apples, some banana and clove. The taste is a tad light but rather smooth. It has flavors of banana cream pie and is slightly grainy. I thought it would have a crisp wheat edge but it doesn't. The feel is moderate with soft carbonation. The finish is quite smooth. Not the best tasting hefe, almost subdued in many ways. However the feel is great and I find this to be an extremely drinkable brew as it doesn't have that dry crisp wheat malt bite.

A- Nice two finger frothy head atop a hazy bright yellow.

S- Very soft mellow floral/banana aroma.

T- Good balance, mild lemon and banana flavor

M- A tad light otherwise good.

D- Tis certainly refreshing.

A good example of the style, but nothing great. I homebrew so i just love the bottles.

Pours a very clouded gold straw with some white head. Nose is a strong mix of wheat, yeast, and fruit. A good touch of banana Laffy Taffy type fragrance on there. Okay. More than a touch. A lot. Flavor is fairly subdued and stronger with banana than I expected. As it warms it seems to be more appropriate. Feel is good. Nice level of carbonation that coats the tongue. As time went on I appreciated this one more and more. Pretty good actually.

After returning from the BADE-BADEN area of germany I had a hankering or more of a loss of true German Hefe Weiss Bier. Alas I found it in the Scwelmer Braueri
1. Great Foamy White Head 3 fingers thick.
2. That classic Banana, Clove Sweet smell.
3. And the taste brought me back to the little town of Guglingen where most of my german relatives live.

I can't wait to go and find another 4-pack. On that note too bad they only come in 4-packs Unless someone can find me a case of theses rare beauties.

500 ml swing-top bottle as shown. Slow pour and swirl into a proper Hefeweizen glass yields 3 fingers of solid white meringue over a lovely opaque light amber body. Lots of carbonation. Head fades to a solid rid and leaves light lacing.

Smell is clove clove clove and banana with a solid apricot (!) presence. Cakey malt, grass, hay. Coriander is there, and a little bit of (weird, I know) salt.

Taste is clove and coriander, cake malt and light floral hops. Dry finish. Nice and refreshing. This would be great with roast pork, schnitzel or wurst.

Mouthfeel is crisp and bright, but the carbonation rounds things out.

Low-ish ABV makes it sessionable, and I'd have given it a 5 for drinkability excep that there is so much carbonation (which is fine in the mouth) it reduces the drinkability a little bit.

A real surprise. This is no Kulmbacher Kapuziner, but it's solid and refreshing. If you see some, get some.

A: Love the Schwelmer swing top. Looks cool. Very pale but with a gorgeous head, but it dissipates quickly.

S: Has that delightful smell.

T: Tremendous wheat flavor. There are slightly better Hefe's, but this is very high quality.

M: A little bit tart. But still a high quality Hefe.

D: Just goes down so nicely. Has a tremendous aftertaste.

One of the best Hefe Weizens. Schwelmer beers, of all kinds, are always fresh tasting. Big fan.

Popping open that bottle top, it sounded as if I'd just released something sinister. A violent force. Gasps & shrieks echo & then die. All is still once again.

The head rises without restraint. Three, maybe four ounces of beer is all it takes to get the weizen glass to start mushrooming. Foggy & dreary to the core, but without any noticeable sediment left in the glass. The Jenga tower collapses so quickly though, that there's hardly any lacing leftover. BB: 881086 err... vwhaat?

The intensity of the cloves scald my brain. There's some green apple in there if you really want to play Where's Waldo. Besides that, it's just plain big up front with artificial Runts candy. The stuff that always gets piled on during Halloween these day. It's more prevalent then even candy corn. The random grape candy in the package is decent, but c'mon. What's all this plastic fruit? Where are all the Snickers? At least give me some Bottle Caps lady.

What you don't trick-or-treat anymore? Where's your spirit? Shame on you.

Taste is thankfully a lot less medicinal. A sweet tropical fruit punch greets you immediately. More then just the typical banana. Pineapple & even kiwi if you dare to imagine for a little bit. White grapefruit to give it some bite, & just enough clove to keep it all from washing away too quickly.

Mouthfeel is inline with the style, with a slighty less carbonation then I'm use to. Not sticky or overly dry on the finish, it washes right down.

Satisfying. :)

Poured from the flippy with a thick, meringue like head that disappeared quickly. Nice cloudy golden color, no noticable yeast that is usually noticable in hefes. Very subtle notes of clove, banana, and I noticed some slight citrus in the begining before the head went away. Tastes like a pure German hefe, light with banana, good balance between the clove and fruit elements. Feels great on the tounge, leaves no after taste that that would keep you from enjoying more than one. ABV a little high to be a session beer but for people with a little higher tolerances, it very well could be.

Serving type: 1 pt .9fl oz

Appearance: Pours a cloudy golden colour w/ a light head that faded a bit quickly

Smell: Bubblegum...banana? Not super sweet, some malts/hops today

Taste: Bubblegum at the beginning and ends what I can best describe as banana's. You get a slight tartness flavour when you begin to taste the banana's but in no way is it overpowering. Adds a nice finish to the drink

Mouthfeel: Pretty light body that lingers slighty on the sides of your mouth. The tartness stays present toward the back of your throat

Drinkability: This is my first time trying a Hefeweizen and I am pretty happy w/ the outcome. It is not overly sweet(which I do not like) nor is it overly tart(which I also do not like) the end it makes a nice happy medium which many people might rather enjoy.

My only complaint is this...I wish the head was present a little longer. It might increase what you smell or help w/ the smoothness. Overall a good drink though

Appearance: Pours a slightly cloudy golden color with a foamy head that retains reasonably well and provides some lace

Smell: More bubblegum than banana, but not overly sweet; some clove elements, too

Taste: Starts out with a bubblegum flavor that is joined by mashed bananas at mid-palate; a little tartness appears just before the swallow, and increases, thereafter through to the finish; cloves make an appearance as well; at the very end, the finish is very dry but there is a honey banana aftertaste that appears that is very pleasant

Mouthfeel: Creamy, with prickly carbonation

Drinkability: Not a bad hefe at all; there are others with more flavor but this one is decent

Pours cloudy golden with a thick, bubbly head that quickly descends to a thin cover.

The smell is of banana/clove and wheat dough.

The taste is of banana/clove and wheat bread. Sweet finish.

Appropriately light-bodied and refreshing, this is a classic example of a HW (that could use better head retention).

This beer poured a yellow-amber color. It had the pure white head of every hefeweizen. There was little to no yeast sediment. It was the typical hefeweizen in every way except for taste. The alcohol taste was in the forefront more than in the typical hefeweizen, providing a little balance to the otherwise sweet and malty flavor of the beer. I'd love to try this fresh.

A - My first swingtop bottle I've ever opened. The cork-type "pop" got me excited to try this. It poured an extremely cloudy peach similar to some wits I've had. It almost glows in my glass. The head erupted up and died down later. I didn't get too much lacing.
S - I got the standard Bavarian Hefe banana and clove smell which I love.
T - The taste was a tad different. It had the banana/clove up front, but had a sour/tart aftertaste which was more noticeable as I drank it (lemon-like sour). It adds complexity by dulling the yeast flavor at the end.
M - has a solid body. Creamy yet tart with the wheat. Good stuff.
D - The sourness was a very nice addition in the beginning, but towards the end it overpowered a little. Overall it was a solid Hefe.

Poured from a 0.5l bottle with a "Best before end" date of 881071 (?) into my faithful Miasel's Weisse weizen glass.

A. Nice cloudy amber straw color. Swirling the last ounce really brought out the yeast, an essential in a Hefe. Small quickly dissipating head with some lacing.

S. Very classic banana clove smell. Quite typical of a German Hefe.

T. Again, typical but high end Hefe taste. Very reminiscent of Pinkus.

M. Here it was dissapointing. I enjoy the higher carbonation of this class as a rule. This beer was poorly carbonated. I am not sure if I got a bad bottle, so I will try it again in the future.

D. As for this whole class, this is a highly drinkable hot weather beer. Could definitely down a few of these.

In summary this is a solid German Hefe. There are a few better in the class, but if this were on of my few choices, I would definitely go with it.

Half-liter swingtop bottle, best before 881075, whatever the hell that means. It pours an opaque peach/grapefruit juice color, with medium carbonation and a fluffy, white, three-finger head that leaves light lacing. The aroma is decadent, with loads of fresh bananas, lemon zest, a clove spiciness, tart wheat, yeast, grassy and floral hops, vanilla and perhaps pears. It tastes quite similar, with banana pudding and nilla wafers, cloves, lemon, yeast, and spicy/grassy/noble hops that impart a mild bitterness. The body is light/medium, fairly carbonated (almost tingly), yet smooth body that delivers a medium finish. Overall a very complex, yet traditional hefeweizen that is packed with flavor and aroma.

I beleive this may be one of the more under appreciated beers in the database.

Poured a murky brown in color. Sturdy white head that quickly dissolved to a thinner scuzzy film. Nose is full of wheat and with just some slight hints of banana and clove.

Flavor is solid and true hefe. Rich and sweet wheat provides a solid backbone. I can pick out some solid yeast breadiness. Citrus gives a bit of a bite. Cloves have a nice herbal presence. Banana provides some hints of fruit. Even picked out some honey-like sweetness. Full mouthfeel that is perhaps a bit watery but I have noticed that is fairly common for German hefe offerings. Great, slow drinking evening beer.
