Very Good
IJwitIJwit
Notes: A full-bodied, Amsterdam wheat beer that is dangerously ‘moreish’. Slightly cloudy, it has a beautiful golden colour and a soft, foamy head. When we brew IJwit, we use wheat malt as well as barley malt, which is also how the beer gets its name. The wheat malt gives the beer a delightful, fresh flavour, and the addition of coriander and lemon during the brewing process produces a rich aroma of banana, citrus and spices. Topped off by a fine, slightly sweet aftertaste, IJwit is a delicious thirst-quencher.

From a bottle.

A mildly hazy light orange yellow with a dense, white head with good retention and lacing. The nose is grainy with a prominent wheat note to go with a mildly sweet grain and orange peel note. Sweetish spice notes are present. The palate is similar, with an enjoyable blend of grainy wheat, mildly toasted with orange and a little sweetness. Mild spice notes are present as well. Refreshing and enjoyable.

It is always good to get good banana in a beer not made in Munchen.
Iljit's Looks also are welcome. It is good to have a semi-haze with wheat coupled with copious foam.
Smells are not prominent, but banana yeast and wheat are in there.
Tastes are a nice medley of malt and herbs, again nothing tries to dominate. All parts play nice.
Sits in my mouth soft and I don't want swallow (but I do.)

I went on the 't IJ website and they seem to be accomplished. With two taprooms (one a windmill destination) and an iconoclastic personality (even by Dutch standards), they are finding their niche. Dedicated to their craft, I hope to stop by in another visit to Amsterdam to see my people (they like bikes and trains, too.)

Found this to be a lovely witbier for summer. Cloudy yellow with white foam, it unleashes the wheat aromas with clove, banana, bubble gum, lemon, hop spice, and biscuit into your nose. Taste is balanced, light and airy, as is the body.

Had in Amsterdam countless times, can't even begin to think about how many of these I downed. Really great brewery, too, pretty easy to get through when you ride the tram thingy. Just look for the windmill when you get off at the station. Super flavorful but in a natural way, soft and easy to drink. Really nice to wash down the herbal refreshments with.

Pours a light yellow, opaque but pretty clean. One-finger head, pretty dense. Spotty lacing.

Smells of banana, bubblegum, bready malts, some clove. Some lemon too.

Taste is banana, caramel, bread, lemon. Alcohol is present, but faint. On the sweeter side, but still keeps a nice balance. It has a very full taste, for lack of a better word -- lots of flavor.

It has a smooth, medium body with very light carbonation. Easy drinker.

Pretty good. It's richer and more complex than any other witbier I've had, without straying from the style.

Orange golden hazy colour with a decent head of foam and nice lacing. A tad on the dark side for a witbier, but no complaints here. Very spicy smell, with a lot of clove flavour. Malt, pilsener hops and lemon are also noticeable. Lots of flavour in the taste, with the aforementioned falvours, but also biscuit, (rotten) banana and coriander. Full-bodied and it goes down smoothly. An excellent witbier, with some Weizenbock characteristics.

Pour a wonderful slightly cloudy lemonade color. Not a lot of foam, and it doesn't last long either...but this didn't have a negative impact on the on enjoying this brew. Left some nice lacing,
fact is most of this is not relevant, this beer is one of them beers that just says "drink me fast".
Refreshing sums up this...looking for a beer on that summer day...this stuff cold, fits the bill.
Recommend trying this one.

Color: light yellow, cloudy.
The head is white, made of fine bubbles.
The aroma perceptible soaked wheat, coriander, to this little wet basement.
Taste, like in flavor, moist wheat, lemon, coriander, banana minimum. All very cool more balanced, lemon countered a slight sweetness.
Gentian light, delicate and pleasant.
Saturation high, you get the impression that beer is sparkling. Gently "tweaks" in the palate and tongue.
Alcohol: not perceptible, but I am convinced that on a hot day, rather than invigorate can bedevil.
Very good wit, smooth, soft, very drinkable.

Hazy yellow colour, small head that fades soon,. leaving some lace. Smell is very faint, some tones of spices, banana, coriander. Medium to full palate. Taste has a noticeable citric tone that is not present in the smell. Spices, banana, coriander, clove. Good.

A: clear yellow colour, dense 1cm thick head, doesn't look like a witbier

S: citrus, hints of coriander, slight peppery notes

T: orange, rather sweet, less spices

M: light to medium body, good carbonation

O: doesn't look like a witbier, does taste like one, and is better then a lot of others

On tap at Cafe Fonteyn, Amsterdam.

Slightly cloudy amber-tinged straw with lacey white head.
Big perfumed nose with some toffee and candle wax yeast.
Lemon 'Nilla Wafers with big candy sugar hit, a lemon hard candy center, some vanilla notes and coriander seed end.
Kiwi finish and drying spicy linger.
Medium side of light, some chew, not crisp enough.

Too sweet, but also complex with decent depth of spice (if not enough citrus). Cloys, but also cleans up after itself. A big fruity, sugary wit.

On-tap at Brouwerij 't Ij, Amsterdam, Netherlands

A: The beer is clear yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high white head that died down and left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and coating the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of floral blossoms and wheat are present in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and has a faint amount of sweetness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little thick (for the style) on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is a strong witbier but it is still very easy to drink. I really enjoyed it.

A- A hazy beige color with just a few white bubbles of head. Second beer I've had from this brewery and they both looked like this, I can excuse the haziness and color a little more for this style at least.

S- Kind of a muddled earthy mess. A bit of citrus and coriander but also earth, grain and a touch of piney, spicy hops. Not what I was expecting.

T- Much better than the smell. Spice (coriander and clove) shine through above notes of citrus, fruity bubblegum and banana. A pleasant mix if not entirely what I expect from a wit.

M- Medium light in body with medium carbonation, okay for the style but I think the high alcohol made this one a bit more dry than it should be.

D- Far from the best wit, it has decent spices but the coriander/orange flavor should dominate, not wrestle with clove, bubblegum and dank earth the way they do here. An okay beer but not one I will soon go for again.

Cloudy and a yellow that's close to orange. There is a lot of yeast in the bottle.
Smells like yeast, spices, citrus peels, fresh bread and some more fruitiness I can't really pin down.
It's a little more bitter and less sweet than most witbier I've had. It feels light and crisp, very nice and just right to make it easy to drink with a fairly strong yeast flavour and some tropical fruit next to the usual citrus flavours and a dry and slightly bitter finish that makes me want to drink more as soon as I put my glass down. The higher than normal alcohol isn't noticeable at all.

A lovely witbier that is a little different from the standard and definitely worth trying.

exp 5/2012
A: quickly disappating head. like a slightly cloudy natural soda. lively carbonation both seemingly random and with a few mini columns. looks like a ginger beer. darkish yellow with a hint of orange.
S: kumquat, mango, yeast isn't so bright but sits in the middle. yes smells like a witbier but with fruitiness. fermented fruit.
T: alcohol isn't very present for 7%, not really any sweetness, neutral, not really bitter, but leans on that side. perhaps hay and lemongrass, but the mango/kumquat is still there but subtle. lemon also. Nice, but very different. I've always thought of witbiers on a scale, an everyone on a point toward or away from perfection, but this one doesn't fit on that scale. Unique. Relatively heavy.
M: the yeast sort of elevates the heaviness of this, lightening it, but you can still feel heaviness underneath. Another thing that makes this one special.
O: special and good.

On tap at the brewery.

LOOK: Cloudy straw, nice lacing

SMELL: Citric peel, spice, yeast, fresh bread, pears, papaya

TASTE: Smooth, medium body, spice forward, clean grain, yeast, plums, coriander bitterness, grainy grassy finish

An excellent example of the style, the dry finish with the long lingering grain and spice after taste makes for and amazingly drinkable beer. A wit where I could have more than one or two.

The third and final of this quick IJ tasting. Common denominator seems to be somewhere in the yeast. Similar mango esters as the triple. This is a bit more tart and has a slight hint of bile in the nose (not a bad thing to me). Color is hazy straw, head is somewhat rocky but goes away quickly. Nice wheat and yeast flavors. I like the body of this much more. Very light. Finishes clean. Really just dig the birds on the label.

Bio wheat beer, 33 cl. bottle. Unfiltered and unpasteurized.

Murky brown colour, thin head.
Smell and taste is bready, with citrus and spicy. Koriander.

This has quite a big bite in the aftertaste. Bitter and spicy, but also alcohol, making this one of the more robust wheatbeers... not for careless drinking on a terrace, when it's warm.
The 7% abv is just too demanding for that.

Had on tap at the Brouwerij 't IJ in Amsterdam.

Pours a honey gold with a very, very thick and full head. Nose of wheat, hay, and honey. Very smooth with a very light mouthfeel. A light wheat flavor and a little bready, this is a very subtle beer.

Very drinkable and very enjoyable: I was drinking it in the sun on a beautiful 75° day and it hit the spot magnificently.

S - Bits of yeast and zesty citrus.

T - Nice wheat flavours up front with a spicey booze finish

M - Light body and carbonation

D - A very good wit beer

Had this beer at the brewery in Amsterdam. Served on tap, cool in small taster snifters.

A-light gold, murky body and a white head.

S-light grain and yeast.

T-grain husk front and a well balanced hop finish.

M-light

D-Very nice. Great with Gouda cheese and salami. Good to see something like this in Amsterdam given what is commonly found. I would drink this again.

A- Pours a hazy yellow with a frothy head that doesn't last very long and leaves little lacing.

S- Smelled really nice, lot's of Banana, fresh baked bread, and some vanilla. Very sweet smelling with some spice added

T- Not as clean tasting as most Wit's, but still very tasty and I am not complaining. Again, banana along with some other fruity flavors, apple maybe, cloves, spice, and some pepper on the back end. Very different but really tasty and went SO nicely with brunch. Weird because it was not what I was looking for but still I really liked it.

M- Pretty smooth, but normally that is not what I am looking for in a Wit. Hmm usually the big bubbles and light zing is a great palate cleanser with food. This one is smooth and creamy. . . good but not what I prefer in a Wit.

D- Very easy to drink, but again when compared to most Wit's it does not have those same clean, refreshing qualities. I could still drink this quite a bit but it's just not the same.

Very good beer, but not in the traditional sense. Most of the Beers from 't IJ that I have tried have been a bit "different" so I guess this is no surprise. In the end I rated this as the beer itself and NOT as or compared to other Witbiers.

Pours a clear amber with a fizzy white head. Wait a second, clear? Well after careful inspection I realized that the fact that my beer isn't reflecting the other reviewers must be due to a thick layer of yeast stuck to the bottom (inside) of the bottle. I'm guessing this has aged at least two years.

Anyways, despite the clarity, the beer was fresh tasting, and quite carbonated.

Taste, I'm getting a bit of alcohol in the taste, some honey, malts, wheat, spices and etc.

Overall, a highly drinkable beer, but due to the outrageous cost to purchase ($4.50 a 12oz bottle) I might wind up sticking with Unibroue for now.

M- Light like it should, very simple and refreshing

D- very good
