A- Tallboy pours into a tulip glass with a deep black body and a one finger, thick and foamy head. The nutty brown cap has fairly good retention and wide sheets of thin lace attach around most of the glass.
S- For the most part this one is about the malts with plentiful extraction of aroma from the grains without suggesting too much sweetness. Represents the toasty to roasted melt spectrum as chocolate, toasted nuts, coffee, slight licorice and caramel come to mind. Definitely a hint of earthy and pine hops in the backdrop.
T- Loses a bit of a step compared to the aroma. The chocolate and nutty tones from the grains really take over and on the whole this is a drier stout. Dark bitter cocoa, roasted barley, caramel, coffee, toast, nuts and very slight dark fruits and bread. Slight earthy, floral and bitter hops.
MF- Overall the brew has a medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a slightly silky and foamy consistency.
It is a shame that more breweries have shied away from brewing beers like this due to the market as having a plain lower ABV stout feels like a thing of the past at this point. This one gets some good use out of the darker grains but lacks the depth of flavor and balance that the great ones have on the palate.
