Located just a few steps away from Bruisin Ales the Mellow always seems to be a stop for us when we visit Asheville.

A funky, crunchy interior with lots of psychodelic paintings and decor--almost feels like a vendors tent at Bonnaroo or a Dead show! A large, L-shaped bar takes up most of the left side of the space.

The big draw, when available, is the outdoor patio seating area. Located along busy Broadway Avenue it is a fun place to sit, have lunch and a few pints and watch the tourists, freaks and locals of Asheville come and go.

Service is always a bit hit or miss at MM. It's not that the folks aren't pleasant, they are. Or the food isn't good, it is. It's that sometimes you wonder how long does it take to make a pizza and a sandwich? I mean, are they doing something else back in the kitchen other than making food?

Not that I care too much simply gives me an excuse to order another pint. Speaking of which one would be hard pressed not to find something on of interest with their 70+ taps! Only reason for not giving a 5 on selection is no cask selections are available.

Food has always been solid with tasty pizzas and yummy sandwich choices. Of course, being Asheville, there are plenty of fairly healthy vegetarian selections on the menu.

Overall the Asheville branch of MM is a must stop. One of the largest tap menus in the city, tasty grub and an attractive outdoor patio--really what more could you ask for?

If you have visited a Mellow Mushroom before, the vibe is the same as others. This one has a great outdoor seating area, and inside the place was decorated brightly. The bar was a nice size and overlooked the large number of taps. Lots of local beers here along with the standard and easy to get national micros. I was lucky to find Foothills Sexual Chocolate on draft. Service was decent despite the large crowds here. Wasn't hungry during my visit so I didn't have any food. So why stop here with all the breweries in the area ? Because you may stumble on a beer or two you can't find in town.

Average food and beer not a focal point of this establishment. Seems like a good quick place to grab a bite and an A beer but just not where I would want to hang out to sample beer.

Not being from down South, this was my first Mellow Mushroom experience. According to the reviews here, apparently this is considered one of the better MM locations? After my experience, that isn't a glowing endorsement of the chain...

We opted to eat lunch here because we have small kids, and pizza is always a hit with small kids. So a pizza place that got good beer reviews online seemed like a good compromise.

And this place was kid-friendly.

And they had craft beer. Which I like.

And the pizza wasn't "bad".

There just wasn't a whole lot "good" about it either. The pizza was mediocre, bordering on "sub-par". They had 30-some beers on draft, but in downtown Asheville, with so many interesting breweries nearby, I found the list to be largely unimaginitive. We practically opened the place at 11:00 AM, and despite being one of only 3-6 tables there throughout our entire meal, we received very slow service.

To top it all off, they brought out a pizza larger than what we ordered... my wife decided the leftovers would be useful, so we didn't complain. So that's my fault. But getting the order wrong initially is still on them.

Maybe it was just one bad experience? But all in all, I wouldn't really recommend it.
