Coopers XPA is all about ‘extra’ hop flavour whilst being well balanced and easy to drink. With Simcoe and Lemondrop American hops added at different stages of the brewing process we have achieved an optimal bitterness level with bright citrus undertones. Like all of our Ales, XPA is naturally conditioned and free from any additives or preservatives.

Purchased at Dan Murphy's in Noosaville in June 2024 and drunk by the pool the next day.

L: Hazy golden yellow with a bright white head. Lots of carbonation in the glass.

S: Strong notes of orange peel and mandarin peel.

T: Like the nose, it is dominated by orange and mandarin pith and peel. That peel note makes it much more strongly flavoured than expected for an XPA, and while I like it, it's certainly not what I was expecting. I suspect the drinkers that an XPA is marketed at would struggle with it.

M: Mouthfeel is soft and sherbety, and carbonation and the carbonic bite are almost zero.

O: I quite like this, but I don't think it's an XPA. It's more of an American pale ale, so I'm marking it down slightly as a result.

Cheers!

Pours out of the can like a cloudy orange soup. First taste is malty then more hoppy and at the end Coopers yeasty bitterness.
Mix of a traditional Coopers ale and a new world hoppy ale, which all in all goes down well.

Slightly cloudy brown, with two fingers of beige head. The smell is of hard water caramel. The taste is of caramel and hard water, with a hint of toasted notes. Medium body with a little carbonation. I got this in Phuket where I’m drinking it, July 8, 2024.

Coopers is Australia's biggest non-foreign owned brewery, and honestly brew some of the best mass produced beers in the nation. It's Pale Ale, Sparkling Ale, Dark Ale and Stout are some of the best on the market, and have now branched out to the XPA market which is taking Australia by storm, and is one of my favourite styles of beer. Let's see how this Aussie classic pairs up to something like Balter XPA, which is one of my current favourite beers.

Appearance: Out of their purple 375ml can, Lovely burnt orange, light caramel look to the beer extremely hazy and cloudy, with a frothy thin head, that dissipates quicker than I had hoped for. I think it's ever so slightly darker than the Balter XPA - although that could just be my lighting.

Smell: Definitely more subdued than the Balter XPA, but bright citrus hops, lemon, orange, passionfruit, mango nectar, with a sweet malt tone as well.

Taste: Summer stone fruit taste, Mango, orange peel, definitely an alcohol flavour to the beer. Definitely more subdued flavour than the Balter XPA, but it's much maltier. Spicy bitter finish.

Mouthfeel: 5.2% alcohol, so it's definitely got a good body to it. Highly carbonated, so it's very fizzy

Overall: It's a nice XPA, but it's not as good as Balter IMO. It's got a higher ABV (by .2%), but the flavours are less pronounced and it's slightly sweeter. Still a good beer in it's own right
