A- This pours with a thick frothy foam head that is caramel tan in color, has excellent retention and eventually settles down to a dense film over the liquid. The Stout itself is deep, dark and super dark brown in color with cola tinges around the underside of the top of the beer....it would appear to be a clear-ish product but of course it is much too hard to see through....making the carbonation invisible to the naked eye. Lacing is decent enough, with stringy artwork clinging to the inside of my glass.

S- Chocolate (dark variety), black french press coffee, burnt and/or heavily toasted black and chocolate malts, hints of vanilla creme, Earthy roots (think licorice/sarsaparilla), mocha, dry grainy goodness and a muted hop presence right at the finish! Overall it is robust and fresh smelling....very nice in the nostrils!

T- Flavors follow suit, with the coffee flavors now reminding me a lot more of cold brew....it's dry astringency really hits the sides and back of the palate! Huge dark chocolate, baking cocoa (freshly ground), creamy yeast, vanilla bean pod. Somewhat like a Coffee Crisp on steroids overall is the best way to describe the flavors found here!

M/O- Solid medium body that leans towards full, and it is complimented nicely by plentiful, yet wee tight carbonation that explodes subtly on the palate, allowing the flavors to show themselves to the highest degree. The drinkability is very good....a most enjoyable Stout that would pair well with a slice of chocolate cake but the dessert like qualities make it a great stand alone! Another winner from Van Isle!

650ml bottle - an 'Irish-style Export Stout'. They also call it a 'perfect nightcap', but it sure sounds more like a breakfast-friendly brew to me!

This beer pours a clear (I believe), very dark, amber-edged brown colour, with three chubby fingers of puffy, rocky, and mildly fizzy beige head, which leaves some decent layered cirrus cloud pattern lace around the glass as it rather slowly sinks out of sight.

It smells of rich artisanal coffee, bittersweet cocoa powder, bready and grainy caramel malt, a bit of free-range char, and some plain earthy, musty, and floral hops. The taste is medium chocolate wafers, fresh cafe-au-lait, grainy and doughy caramel malt, a hint of black licorice root, and more understated earthy, herbal, and gently lit-up floral green hoppiness.

The carbonation is adequate in its structurally supportive frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and generally smooth, with maybe just a soupcon of ashiness creating a minor snag in the proceedings here. It finishes off-dry, the milky coffee and cocoa exhibiting the most lingering fervour - quelle surprise.

Overall - this does a swell job of mimicking that java shop staple of titular renown. Yup, coffee and chocolate, laid over a sturdy base Export Stout. There's not much more to this one, but there doesn't really need to be. Good, good stuff.
