Style: British Barleywine

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This black beauty features a grain bill that is as immense as it is dark. With a deliciously chocolaty aroma, this Black English style Barleywine has dark malt and chocolate flavors that accompany the high alcohol percentage associated with the style. Very similar to an Imperial Stout.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a short tan head that died down, leaving lacing on the surface and a narrow collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of dark malts are present in the nose.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste has lots of flavors of dark malts and a bit of roast. Hardly any alcohol is perceptible.
M: It feels a bit more than medium-bodied and a little dry on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. Faint hints of warming from the alcohol are present.
O: This is an interesting beer—it's almost like a blend between a barleywine and a stout. It is quite drinkable considering its strength.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into snifter.
A: Pours a very dark brown with a generous 2-3 inch foamy dark tan head with good retention.
S: Booze soaked raisins, caramel malt, cinnamon, nutmeg, milk chocolate, and a hint of a vinous note.
T: Dark bitter chocolate, earthy spice (e.g. nutmeg), raisins, that vinous note, and sweet caramel malt. Kind of an odd middle ground between a barleywine and an imperial stout. Hint of butterscotch with warming.
M: Soft and supple feel. Medium-heavy body. Sweet with mild stickiness. Mildly bitter. Lingers and matures a little bit on the palate.
D: An interesting--and slightly odd--brew for sure...walking the line between barleywine and imperial stout.

Another 750 ml bottle in their Reserve series.

Black but not pitch black. Smallish head of foam, lacing is better than I expected.

Smells of caramel/sweet malt, dark fruit, a bit of hoppy bitterness. In that order.

Dark chocolate, pitted fruit, caramel malt and more hop bitterness than what the smell insinuated. A wee bit astringent but, overall, quite smooth. The ample alcohol does a good job of hiding in the background.

High end of medium bodied, moderate carbonation.

Bottled February 9th. Might have been somewhat rough fresh. At this point, it's a lovely drop. Could be even more enjoyable given some more time.
