Golden to abmer in colour, nic ehead retention and good lacing, head lasts a while. Smells of loray and fruity hops. Taste is quite balanced bwteen the fruit hops and malt undertones. A tad standard? Easy to dring beer and one of the better Squire beers

One of my favourites, nice and hoppy with citrus overtones, very drinkable and not tiring over a long session.
Served in a standard pint glass off the tap, tastes best chilled, not a beer that improves with standing and temperature increase.
The best beer from the Malt Shovel Brewery by a fair way, glad it is now a permanent member of the family.

A difficult beer to rate: it's the second hoppiest, and second tastiest, beer that I had in a month in Australia. I had it on tap (20 ounce pint) at the James Squire brewpub (in the restaurant side) in Melbourne for the slightly difficult price of AU$8 per pint, and then again had several pints for AU$5.60 at the James Squire brewpub at King's Wharf, Sydney, at happy hour.

In Melbourne, I ordered the IPA and my friend asked what else was on. When the apparently competent server said they had a Golden that was their hoppiest beer, we both did a double take, looked at one another with doubt, and then my adventurous friend ordered it. We were shocked and pleased.

The beer was a medium copper, very limited aroma, served ridiculously cold (as were all the beers down under), and had very vigorous white head but active bubbles and carbonation visible and in the mouth. Head diminishes, but they pour wiwth such stupid, reckless abandon in Australia that it's hard to tell what head was just bad pour. (This is from watching in pubs, brewpubs, and restaurant bars in NSW, TAS, SA, VIC, and QSD.)

First taste: whoa! An Australian beer with hops! Second taste: more of the same! Holy sh*t! Hops! In Australia! No, really! We spent most of that pint trying to be sly about sneaking drinks from it, while the IPA languished.

Great solid fresh spicy citrus hop start, which remained consistent throughout. That is, while the beer was cold. Then something bizarre happened: as the beer warmed, it got worse. A wet, slightly stale and sour grain aroma came out, and this in the taste as well, though not as strong. The hops became distinctly less assertive in both the body and the aroma. This was only the case in Sydney, since we greedily gobbled the beer down in Melbourne. It happened three pints in a row, though it remained the best beer at James Squire, and up to that point, the hoppiest beer in Australia, so I kept ordering it (especially at the AU$5.60 happy hour pricing.)

So I'm not sure what to think of this beer: it was one of the best I had in the whole country in a month, yet got spookily stale and less assertive and less interesting as it warmed. (And in case anyone is wondering, I prefer my beers at cellar temp, and have found almost no others which tasted worse upon warming, except for american macro lager styles.)

If I could rate on initial taste, it would be something like a 3.5 for taste. However, as it warms it comes closer to 2.5, so I've averaged. Drinkability is rated relative to how thirsty I was for good beer in a continent which apparently has very, very little of it.

I would order it again, for sure, as it was excellent compared to the immense amount of pissy yellow swill served in Australia, and one of the better beers at James Squire. I would just drink it fast.

Golden-copper in colour, small white head and reasonable lacing. Honeyish, flowery and tropical fruit aroma. The label speaks of toasted barley and wheat flavours. Also some peachy flavours, some flowery, lightly spicy hop flavour, honey, and a mild bitter finish. Flavour seems to be a lot more evident at around 10 degrees C. Light mouthfeel, like that of a lager, and mild carbonation. Could easily have several of these. I believe they have now made this part of their permanent lineup and I'm glad.

Had this on tap at the sherlock holmes.

A = Golden orange with a thin foam head that quickly dissapates.

S = Light fruitty aroma with faint hop notes

T = Light fruitty taste that followed through with a slight hop finish. Very tasty.

M = Moderately carbonated. Easy to drink.

D = Good. Easy session beer.

Deep orange to gold with a static variably bubbled head and a small amount of bead.
It looked enticing
It smelt of flowery stewed stone fruits
The taste was reminiscent of a Jaffa Sweet oranges with a hint of chocolate It finished sharp and crisp.
This delovers bigtime for me and for what the label says it will do
It is thirst slaking and uaffable.
It is not overly complex or bitter and would make a great session beer.
in act if it stays at around $2 a stubby I will be drinking quite a bit more over summer

I tried a pint of Golden Ale at Elephant & Wheelbarrow in Melbourne. They had a $5 pint special on it. Anyways, I wasn't expecting a whole lot from it. I'm not a fan of their Amber Ale and figured this would be comparable.
To my surprise this was a quite tasty brew. Nice balance of malt and citrusy hops. It pours, um, golden in color, with an attractive head. Carbonation was quite good too. For $5 this was a good buy. There's nothign totally outstanding or memorable about this beer, but it doesn't lack in any category, either. I give it straight 4's. Give it a shot.

Golden ochre-brown body. Little carbonation. A centimetre-deep off white head.

Smells very similar to their IPA, fragrant fruits, sweet malt and a hint of sharp hops as well. Very sweet, quite pleasant.

It has a great deal of that nasty sour yeast character, which I feel ruins whatever other potential may be in there. It starts well, with a sweet, fruity lightness. But after a while it just sinks to this wek sticky bad yeast flavour.
Eh. It's drinkable, but certainly not special.

So not interesting enough. It's rather bland, and very forgettable.

This beer is great. It's a very good example of an English Pale Ale, with heaps of hoppy, fruity flavours and good session potential. I *wish* Malt Shovel made this one permanent and on tap at more places, because it would be great to drink this one all night. The only complaint is poor head retention (partly expected from the style) and a somewhat coarse mouthfeel. However, these do not detract from the fact that this is by far the finest James Squire ever released, and that it's exceptional even from the bottle. I would buy casks of this stuff if I could. Best beer I've had in a long time, and perfect for cooler nights in the Australian summer.

well, been a long time since ive been down this road.

color is a bit deeper. clear gold, with an orange tinge. ok enough head. reforms well with a swirl. same orange tinge joins the usual whiteness.

aroma is like a completely different beer. much more apa like with more obvious citrus right up front. orange zest with a hint of yeast.

i can see how this has become so popular (or why they push it so hard). probably the best australian "crossover" beer. like trying mango chicken as your first curry. definitely some different flavors going on to the usual fish and chips, but not the straight up head of a vindaloo either.
nice balance with the hops making a showing, and not too much sweetness from the malt side.

not sure if anything has changed about this beer since its release, other than my opinion. much more palatable than i remember.

well, pretty interested to finally try this one.
fairly light in color. gold, with not much head forming from the tap. slight lacing forms with a light swirl of the glass.

not much aroma to it first up. as it warms, a light citrusy/spicy aroma shows up. thought this was supposed to be similair to cascade (as in citrusy) but not really noticeable at all.

flavor is really leaning towards spicy/peppery from the hops, with the malt secondary.

with the advantage of hearing from one of the brewing reps, and getting their objective from this beer, it seems they hit their mark. having a slight ale flavor, and a majority lager everything else. as in a crisp clean taste/mouthfeel.

sadly though, for me at least, this seems like a cop out. but its not a bad beer by any means. though, i have to think, why settle for trying to be second best or appeal to the masses?
