This one does not deserve the low reviews. Sweet cereal grain. Spicy, herbal European hops. Overall impression is of lager on the sweet side, and at 5.4% ABV, with more alcohol than your average American lager. In Spain (where I live) - at about 4 euro for a 6-pack, it's a great deal.

Yeah, this one is pretty foul like Kirby Puckett turning on a burner. You take a drink, and it’s a small shock. Not a big one, but a small shock of skunkiness like Pepe Le Pou before his next date. It’s not the worst, but neither is Taco Bell when you’re struggling.

Is somewhat like German brand Warsteiner... See Warsteiner reviews. If anything, Warsteiner is t better from my experience, more flavor and more tangy bite. This beer is inoffensive, quaffs easily when iced, but lacks any real substance or style. Good summer beer when you want something headier than a AAL light.

330ml bottle, with best by date of '05/19'.
Clear, straw/pale gold colored body. One finger of white bubbly head, leaves behind a few strings of lacing.
Aroma of sweet, toasted malt, with a whiff of slightly spicy hops.
Taste of sweet grain at first, and then some floral and spicy hops arrive toward the end. Not bitter, and not much in the aftertaste.
Thin to medium mouth feel. Very good carbonation.
Quite a sweet lager, very good when imbibing with food.

Damm S. A. "Estrella Damm"
330 ml brown glass bottle, "BEST BEFORE END 07/19 L280504" and sampled on 28 January 2019"
$2 @ Wegmans, North Wales, PA

Look: Clear golden body beneath a short head of white foam that fades steadily but leaves some nice lacing behind. Plenty of fine bubbles can be seen steadily rising within the glass.

Smell: Sweet grainy malt backed by subtle herbal hops.

Taste: As the aroma suggests, it's a sweetish beer upfront but it manages to balance itself in the end through a median bitterness and a healthy dose of spicy and herbal hops. It has a richer malt than most Euro lagers.

Feel: Medium in body and crisp with a standard carbonation level.

Overall: A fairly unique European lager but nothing to write home about.

On tap at the new Westin Hotel, Brisbane, Australia. L. Appropriate yellow/gold with a modest head that fades to froth and spotting. S. I have a busted nose, but a slight fruit/grain/corn hint. T. Lots of carbonation astringency upfront, that fades to a sweet corn/fruit middle and a dry finish. Interesting to follow the transition, but not remarkable. F. Light and frothy, but settles. O. Not bad, I will drink it again, but nothing exceptional.

Pours a pale gold with active carbonation bubbles, but no head

Smells of corn. Taste is a bit more interesting. Grainy corn, but also a hint of apple.

Heavily carbonated. Slightly oily.

Pours a nice gold color with a white soapy head, and descent lacing on the glass. There is a slight bitter taste towards the finish. This beer is neither great nor bad, it is just middle of the road.

Wow! this is really smooth & easy drinking. They even put a best by date on their box. I think they should put dates on the bottle labels too, but what do I know. This taste like a Budweiser without the nasty adjuncts. Put down the Budweiser & pick up a 6 pack of Estrella Damm. Cheers! B

I am actually very surprised that this beer is not well rated. It rivals my favorite German lagers. For me, this specific beer represents everything that a light-bodied lager should be. It maintains a very refreshing feel from start to finish, and that's exactly what is ideal.

Had this on tap at a pub in a park...Christmas Day I think it was. Overall, not great, but not that bad...I have had worse for the style. It was smooth and easy to drink. If in Spain again, sure, but would not order it elsewhere.

This is not an offensive pale lager. It looked fine; I do like a bit more head and lacing. Pleasant smell and taste. Slightly sweet, breads, but crisp. A malty finish.

12oz bottle poured in to glass.
Look: pale gold, with a medium white head.
Smell: Corn, biscuits, and grassy notes.
Taste: corn, biscuits, grassy notes. The hops make this stand out. It makes a balanced flavor.
Feel: classic Macro, session beer.
Overall: this beer is probably one of the best non craft beer, I have ever had

L - clear yellow, white head, dissipates quickly
S & T - watery, corn and pilsner malt. Slight Whitebread sweetness. Very light. Then a generic Hop bitterness, but quite generously bitter, not too light.
F - thin, quite heavily carbonated

O - meh. It's beer. Must have when in Barcelona but not so much anywhere else

I wouldn't really recommend it.

330 ml bottle into lager glass, best before 8/2016. Pours slightly hazy pale golden/yellow color with a 1 finger dense white head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of cracker, corn, white bread, lightly toasted biscuit, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Touch of yeast fruitiness, but not overdone. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of pale malt and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of cracker, corn, white bread, lightly toasted biscuit, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of cracker, corn, white bread, lightly toasted biscuit, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Nice robustness and balance of pale malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Perfectly clean on lager flavors, with zero yeast notes present. Moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderate crisp, and bready/grainy/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.4%. Overall this is a nice pale lager style. All around nice robustness and balance of pale malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink. Very flavorful for the ABV. Nice hop presence for a Euro lager; with plenty of pilsner malt flavor too, aside from the adjunct notes. A nicely enjoyable offering.

This beer is all about the environment in which it is drunk. When it is 30degC in a beach bar in Spain it will taste excellent. On a cold Wednesday evening in Edinburgh it probably won't.

Decent enough session lager.

Overall, a disappointing beer. It was very light. A bit bitter to drink, way too carbonated (overpowering). The foam head stuck around for a long time. Some folks may like it, but it wasn't my kind of beer. No-go for me in the future.

On draft at Amada in Philly. Nice flavor for a standard lager. This is what American lagers should taste like. Smooth and refreshing with a sweet orange note in the finish. Goes well with Tapas or any food. Overall very impressed with this Spanish lager.

I just tried a couple of fresh pints in Barcelona, where it is brewed. Very good, light, just the right amount of flavor. Based on other reviews it may not age/transport well to the US but in Barcelona don't hesitate to try it.

Served cold from 660ml brown bottle into straight pilsner mug.

L) Pale golden colour, clear, very bubbly, fluffy white head.

S) A bit of a weird metallic smell. Bits of lagery malt.

T) Pretty weak flavour, no real bitterness, a bit of a weird herbal flavour right in the back.

F) Light and quite fizzy. No skanky aftertastes, very drinkable.

O) Sub-par lager, if you want something cheap and cheerful go for Stella instead.

I like the red bottle, looks cool...

Brewed from barley and rice.

Look is pale lagerish and nothing special, best to drink from bottle :)

Aroma is fresh and hoppy.

You can definitely taste the rice. Works well actually. Though like most lagers and pilsners, I will probably be bored before the end of the glass!

And yes, I am bored.

Unique with the rice taste, though I much prefer the Madrid competitor, Mahou. However, I would enjoy this on a steaming hot day watching girls walk past in Barcelona. Though as an actual beer, it's only a little above lowly beers like Carlsberg.

It has a crisp taste, though not enough happening to really be unique, except the ricey taste that gives it a refreshing crispness

Distinguished by its popularity in a Mediterranean wine culture, Estrella Damm should not be expected to do much more than refresh. It does; starting with Mediterranean fruits for a nose and finishing crisp and clean, Estrella does its job and, obviously, provides broad satisfaction. While a bit thin in the mouth, that may have helped it pair well with a bevy of tapas appetizers.

Reviewed in "1001 Beers You Must Taste" (in the "Before You Die" series of Universe Publishing), the reviewer noted how the brewery's 19th Century founder immigrated from Alsatia... perhaps explaining how the brew fits the Barcelona kitchen broadly and how Damm can continue making efforts in that tradition. For that, Damm deserves to be on the "1001" list.

A fairly aggressive pour from a tall can nets a meagre one finger of bubbly white head. Colour is gold, with lots of visible carbonation. Head retention is weak, and only a bit of lacing.

Smells like an American adjunct lager, like there's either rice or corn here. A bit of apple skin, some biscuit/cracker and a light herbal twang. Taste echoes: a bit oily, slight corny sweetness, but some apple skin, sweetness, but there is some nice biscuit/malt character and a bit of a hoppiness. Raw grain. Aggressive, cola-like carbonation and surprisingly heavy body.

As far as adjunct lagers go, I actually think it's pretty nice--on the heavy side, given it's cut with rice AND corn, but drinkable, and there's at least a bit of a hop presence here. Having said that, it's not worth import prices, and it's not really "good" by any metric I can think of.
