Visited on a weekday afternoon and was surprised to find a sizable line 5 minutes after open. This was because they announce growler sales on the FB page a few hours before they open, so lucky us, we got a few. Vibe and space is quite pleasant. There were not a lot of beers on tap, but this was the only place in the Twin Cities we found with hazy NEIPAs, and the ones served here are quite good.

Beautiful space with a good amount of seating. The beer is fantastic. All of them were. I wish they had more than six beers on tap, especially since 5 of the 6 were pale ales and Berliner Weiss style.

brand new, so i am going to give them some benefit of the doubt here. i had a great time, and their space is awesome, but a few less than perfect aspects at work right now. primo location for these guys, right next to dark horse in downtown saint paul, a cool old building with an almost european cellar vibe inside, some wood, exposed brick, low lighting, and barrels all over the place. the ambiance would be brilliant, but the place was so packed on a thursday night that we couldnt sit, and almost had to scream at the bartenders to get a beer and to talk to each other. hard to be upset about a business doing so well, but it was hopefully not a sign of how its always going to be, i like to relax when i drink, and it was unrelaxing. the beer list was hop focused pretty heavily, and they were all good, but better in isolation than a flight, where they literally all look and smelled more or less the same. i get it, hazy ipa is here to stay, but the good ones stand out quite a long way from these messy amateur ones. i hope they dial these in a bit more, all were quite bitter despite being so dry hopped, and it was not bad, but not great either. i did enjoy the berliner quite a lot too, and see they have some other non hoppy stuff in their lineup as well. dudes behind the bar were cool and seemed able to keep pace with the demand. im sure their beer will get better over time, and with a name like barrel theory, i cant wait to see what all of these barrels will yield. i also hope it relaxes a bit more into a beer place rather than a going out sort of place, if that makes sense, but i am of course happy to see them doing so well in the early going. maybe when hours expand the place will mellow. for now, still way cool and definitely worth a visit. more to come as they evolve...

First off, if you're not used to downtown St. Paul, like I am not, parking is a pain. Lots of seating. They have pre filled growlers. Beer is great. Some music playing in the background, but it is loud in here from all the people talking. Interesting place.

The taphouse is sunlit with huge windows with a sunny side outdoor seating patio(open soon). this former magic shop has been transformed into a beautiful space complete with renovated/original turn of the century floors, limestone and reclaimed wood, A beautiful L shaped old wood bar top frames the tanks behind the bar even the lighting fixtures are period perfect. Now the brew its Stouts, sours, and Ipa's, to start. The quality of the inaugural brews are superb with the Berliner Weiss and NEIPA being the best. Service is very good you dont have to wait the folks direct you and want to serve up the brews. The owners Timmy & Brett are usually here visible and approachable, looks like they will have a pass thru restaurant service (wall cut out) available at some point to Dark Horse . In the future a basement below the brewery will house 100's of Barrels for Stouts, Saisons, and wild fermented offerings, This is what they will excel at IMO
