on-tap at the great japan beer festival tokyo 2008-

a: black/brown body with a finger of off-white head

s: chocolate malts with hints of coffee and a little bit of the ocean

t: first chocolate malts followed by warm roasted coffee malts with just a hint of oyster that blends pretty well with the chocolate and coffee

m: smooth and creamy with light carb

d: an interesting beer that could be good with sea food

Had on cask in Tokyo.

Super dark brown, opaque color with a fine tan head.

Aroma is milk and dark chocolate, coffee, and some brineyness.

Flavor starts off very chocolatey, goes to coffee, and then finished a with a touch of ash tray acridity. I think I'm getting some of the brine in the after taste. Pretty tasty beer. Moderately sweet, doesn't build too much.

Mouth feel is somewhat heavily bodied with light, smooth carbonation. Alcohol warmth is about where it should be.

Overall, a fairly quaffable and cozy little beer. It's not blowing my mind, but I'd have it again.

330 ml bottle, no date

pours a muddy very dark brown, close to black, with thick tan colored head. decent head retention. aroma leans toward sweet chocolate. taste is similar, just a touch of woodiness and brine. a little too sweet. medium bodied, a bit oily.

Excellent stout enjoyed at the Lobster Club NYC, e 53 St, a must try sushi place.
Oyster stout from MD I've enjoyed and I wish it was everywhere and came in cans.
a) Dark as ink, flattish, not much head, no lace, low carb.
s) But sweet, chocolate air over wood.
t) Beautiful marriage with Japanese cuisine, sushi. Sweet yet balanced, woody, oaky, simple, chalky.
f) Nice feel, low carb, clean finish, great food marriage.
o) balanced Japanese stout. Dont miss.

an impressive beer, stout brewed with real oysters (shells and all) from japan. its creamy on the pour, a little sediment toward the bottom of the bottle but mostly clear and shiny, with a full inch of the thickest, creamiest, most luxurious tan head out there, great retention and lace. aroma here is not saltwater at all, its clean, chocolaty, biscuits, a little alcohol, earth, cream, soft black pepper. the flavor is great too, really intense chocolate notes to this from the malt, almost tastes like chocolate added, all the way through, a little sweet but also appealingly bitter. the oysters add a slight brine element to the flavor, but more of an earthy creaminess, and it appears as much about texture as flavor in this particular brew, but their impact is very interesting. the beer is thick but somehow delicate, and the flavors are intense and even bizarre at times, but extremely approachable at the same time. not sure how they do this one, or why this beer hasnt caught on here in the states yet, but this is something to behold, one of the best oyster stouts i have had, and really an incredibly unique beer. thanks to drlovemd87 for the hookup on this memorable japanese beauty!

7% ABV per the label.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, earth, and char aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa powder, dark fruit, earth, and char flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is solid for a stout, but nothing about this one would lead me to believe it was brewed with oysters.

My first ever oyster stout.
Is a muddy dark dark dark brown. nice head of dark brown foam. Soft and inviting with good retention.

Nose I initially get some coffee and crisp chocolate and something else I can't quite put my finger on, but it's kind sharp and sweet. Some roasty malts.

Flavour follows suit. Smoothe creamy cold pressed coffee and some sweet cocoa with a roasty finish. This is really crisp. There is a really slight brininess weaving through the whole thing somewhere that's mostly noticeable in the post-finish, and could be partly a figment of my imagination.
Medium to thin body, but crisp and creamy. As it warms I am more convinced that the brine/marine-ness is less my imagination and more real as I'm having flashbacks to growing up on an island and lots of time at the beach.
Pleasant and drinkable

This has a very nice look. The body is super dark brown, the head is light brown, pillowy, and semi-dense. There is a uniform curtain of dense foam along the sides of the glass as I give it a twirl. There is a soapy, soy saucy smell, along with the malt and roast aroma. It has a malty Sapporo smell. The taste is decent and unique, and difficult to describe. I can almost discern some minerals. Mouthfeel is thin and slick, with medium carb.

Overall, I have settled on this tasting somewhat like a stoutly Sapporo. Stout-99%, Sapporo-1%. No oyster taste. I would have this again, if bottles weren't $7 per 12oz. This is worth a try.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours pitch black with a one finger light brown head with great retention and lots of lacing. Aroma of sweet toasted malt, chocolate, light lactose and coffee. Flavor is nicely integrated semi-sweet toasted malt, chocolate, mild oyster shell brininess, hints of coffee. A very pleasant light sweet chocolate malt flavor comes in at the end before a long toasted malt finish. Good creamy medium bodied. A quite well made, well rounded roasty stout with just the right touch of sweetness to tie the other flavors together. Great balance from oyster shells with little evidence of marine flavors. I really liked this stout and am glad to have run across it.

Served from bottle into pint glass.

A- Dark brown, no head.

S- Roasted malt, coffee/caramel, a little bit of salty shellfish note, but it is very faint.

T- Again, roasted malts, coffee and dark sugars. Caramel. You can get some salty water taste in the end that you know is the oyster, but it is also very faint in the taste and it is covered up by the alcohol.

MF- Light-medium bodied, creamy, little carbonation, smooth and this does stick to the mouth well. The alcohol finish hangs around for a while leaving a warming feeling.

O- It was interesting to try, but didn't wow me so much. Kinda hard to find, even if you do, expect to dig into the wallet a bit. This is something I would like to try again on tap if I can ever do that one day. Not bad though.

A- very inky. Not much head.

S- sugar comes out on the nose

T- a very good stout. Not overly sweet, but enticing enough. Very full taste. Could only have one. Alcohol taste is there but not at forefront.

M- coats the mouth. Not a bad thing given the taste isn't overwhelming.

O- one of the most balanced japanese stouts I have had i.e not too sweet. Will have again when I see it.

Pours a deep, rich black with a single-finger brown head. Head slowly subsides. With each drink, it does not stick to the glass, but the head withers slowly away, with the remainder clinging kindly to its beer brethren.

Very faint aroma of chocolate. Some fishy / shellfish aroma, but extremely limited.

Deep roasted and chocolate malts permeate the taste from front to back. Some ever so slight hop bitterness comes in at the tail as well. A little milky and creamy at the outset, but it quickly gives way.

Not quite what I would expect from an oyster stout ... more complex, more bitter undercurrents, not as creamy. Definitely higher in carbonation than is necessary, but not in a bad way with this beer.

Absolutely nothing wrong with this beer to keep me from drinking more of it. The bittering hops leave a hair of dryness, and the sweet chocolate aftertaste just leave me asking for another bottle.

Pours a nice brown/black with a medium tan head that quickly fades.

Nose is of Belgian candi sugar and fruit. Smells like a nice Belgian double, not a stout. Sweet fruit, sweet carmel and malt. No typical stout nose characteristics.

Mouthfeel is thin cream but lightly rich and quite appealing. Very well balanced with light carbonation and a buttery character.

Flavors are all well balanced stout with nice "basic coffee" flavors and and a semi-sweet dark chocolate flavor and finish. Nice balanced acid and very pleasing. There is no oyster character to this brew whatsoever (although one is tempted to "find some" because we know it's there, it still doesn't exist no matter how much one looks).

Finish is a nice rich black dark coffee with an espresso bitterness.

This is actually a very drinkable and pleasant stout that has lots of flavor, balance and character but is not too heavy or burdensome to drink.

Had this one on tap at Popeye's in Tokyo. Appearance is textbook - very dark brown, bordering on black, with maybe an inch of cream coloured head. Roasted malt aroma has cocoa, coffee and a touch of the sea. Nice roasted malt flavour, with the chocolate coming to the fore, and only the slightest hint of brine in the finish. Smooth, soft mouthfeel with low carbonation. Nice... I liked it.
