I had this on tap in August of 2009 at the Walking Man Brewery in Stevenson, Washington. The colour was a cloudy amber with no head. The aroma was sweet with citrus and macerated golden raisins. On the palate, there were plenty of hops up front with a golden sirop sweetness and a cloying quality. On the back of the palate, there was a gently coating feel with flavours of golden raisins, zante currants and medjool dates.

On tap at Roscoes 3-20-13. 2010 vintage.
A: Reddish brown with a placid ring of head. Surprisingly lacks legs. Not particularly appealing.
N: Bready and biscuity. There's a noticeable salted caramel effect, some leather, and a good amount of tobacco up and above the sweetness.
T: Very bready and sweet. Hints of over-ripe pineapple, some caramel and toffee.Hoppiness lends a welcome undercurrent. There's lots of brown sugar, though some medicinal elements detract. Sweet, not cloying.
M: Sticky and heavy. It's really what you want out of a beer of this style.
O: A really good beer from Walking man. Trying this again brings back good memories of time spent at the pub in Stevenson. Good show.

The rotating brewer saga at Walking Man appears to be spawning some recipe changes as well. After having this barleywine in 2010 I re-attacked this at The Red Hot Tacoma while it was on cask. Wow. Completely different beer. See notes below.
A: Poured a deep, deep brownish black with some burgundy hues, a small whispy head that immediately fades as the server sits it down.
S: Chocolate nose, with some toffee, leather, caramel, a nice pungent booze sting
T: Wow. Very good, better than I recall from the old batch. Starts with a chocolate base, some, eather, tobacco, roast and hints of coffee, toffee, minimal hop bite, some char and roastiness on this. Booze gives a sharp little stinging bite.
M: Full bodied, warming, hearty with loads of decadent flavors on the palate
O: Amazingly good. Whatever the news guys at Walking Man did to Stumblefoot worked. This cask bwine is delightful!

A: Poured a nice orangish color, deep orangish, seemed to change colors as I looked at it with a nice white head.
S: Nose is sugary sweetness, citrus and a light booze sting
T: Taste is big citrus hops, caramel, lighter booze than ABV lets on, a big cider like flavor, apples
M: Full bodied yet over carbonated a little bit.
O: Very dangerous because the ABV is so well hidden and this is very tasty.

Why does he have to be old? Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a orange almost reddish hue throughout. A soft white head with limited lacing.
The nose is light for a barleywine but noticeable hop aroma. To start there is a blend of citrus, grapefruit and herbal aromas. Some minor cat piss notes but light. The malt is noticeable but is second to the hops. Some caramel notes and a light biscuit backing. Mostly clean yeast but some esters and noticeable alcohol, but not solvent-like.
The taste is a bit more balanced but the hops are still the stronger flavor. To start there is a noticeable bitterness that lingers into the finish. There are nice citrus and herbal hop notes but are hidden just a touch behind the bitterness. Some minor skunk but I was the only that picked it up in my group. The malt comes out more versus the nose. A light caramel note with more of a malt and grainy flavor. The yeast is clean with some plum esters and a touch of raisins.
The body is moderate and a touch light for a barleywine. The carbonation is light as well but ok. Overall a good barelywine. Hides the alcohol very well but would like the bitterness to back off.

On tap in a 4 oz sampler glass at the Walking Man pub.
Tried the '09 and '10. The '09 is more flavorful and matured by far. This review is reflecting the '09.
appearance - dark amber, big retention and amazing lacing that literally covered the entire glass...truly have never seen anything like this on a beer
smell - strong and sweet caramel, an orchestra of hop notes
taste - heavy complexity, enormous caramel malts dominate the palate while the aforementioned hop notes swim around the mouth, the difference with the '10 was much less maturity in the flavor profile and the alcohol was more prominent but the '09 shined in the taste arena
mouthfeel - incredibly smooth, huge body, very mellow finish
drinkability - for the '09 this was deceiving easily to drink for an 11.00% beer (11.90% for the '10), it's a huge beer but complex and enjoyable, needs to be sipped slowly
From the brewery:
Barleywine style ale. As much malt as we can fit in the mash tun and almost all of the hops in the brewery. Strong, balanced, age-worthy.

Old Stumblefoot delivers a mellifluous, brown sugar flavor with muscular bittering on a tawny body leaving modest lace on the tulip glass Walking Man serves their big beers in. Best I can say is that while this barleywine is ultimately enjoyable, it doesn't compare to the rest of Walking Man's lineup and could probably stand another year or two in the cellar.

Another Walking Man brew Buckeyeboy provided at last weekend's tasting... Grolsch Flip-top filled at the brewery ... Badass.. Thanks Jeremy!!
Very bright orange brew with a good white head and lacing.
Nose is also "bright orange"... tons of citrus/grapefruit zest... some lite caramel and malty sweetness to push the hops forward and out of the glass... DIPA territory for sure.
Great bitterness out of the gate is balanced by barely enough malts.. slight sugar cookie sweetness... citrus hoppiness blows things out mid palate with a lingering hoppy finish....
The body is medium with a lite/medium carbonation...
Wow.. this tastes fresh... the hops are juicy and very abundant... not even sure that this belongs in the BW category, but I am gonna go along for the ride and give a nice round applause. Much applause should go to my Buckeye Buddy!!

On tap at Walking Man 12/2. Tasted both 'new' and 2006 vintages.
Dark amber white head slow dissipation. The '06 had sweet and bready malts in the nose, with a bit of hops in the back end. Same profile in '09. Deep, rich, sweet taste, hops are pretty mellow in the taste, with a fairly dry finish. Vanilla, fruity esters (cherry) dominate the taste, but there is a significant hop presence. Significant alcohol heat in the finish. Dangerously drinkable for ABV, but you better be walking after drinking this. Exemplary for the style, the '06 was particularly outstanding. Worth a drive across the Bridge of the Beer Gods for barleywine lovers. Highly recommended.

On tap at the Walking Man , menu noted 12.3% abv.
Aroma: Sugary base, like an IPA, but no hops noted.
Appearance: Nice white cap on a deep amber glass that showed great clarity.
Flavor: Mild caramel aspect, no alcohol notes which is scary. The beer is really pretty mild.
Mouthfeel: A light body, feels alcoholic but doesnt taste it.
Overall Impression: Very smooth, almost too mild. This is dangerous. It actually tasted like a British mild in some ways. Hard one to review, easy one to drink.

07 Vintage on tap at the brewery. Helped ease the pain of loosing my ATM card. 12.3% ABV
Absolutely no hint of booze. Remarkable.
Appearance: Mildly hazy and very bubbly orange-brown, almost chestnut hues with a small amount of lacing.
Aroma: Earthy yet alive with notes of coffee and citrus. Not the faintest notion that this is a 12.3% beer.
Flavor: Explosive dark figgy/plumy fruits, roasty and toasty malts, coffee, toffee, and toast completely balanced by highlighting amounts of citrus in the finish.
Mouthfeel: Warming but not boozey. Smooth, rich, full, and sexy. Balanced.
Drinkability: Flawless.

Had the 2005 vintage at the Lucky Lab barlywine fest, just now catching up on my notebook of reviews. Of the many barelywines I had at this fest, it was the best of show, really fantastic. I made sure to have a couple glasses!
Copper colored with no head or collar, leaving light thin lace.
The aroma was really nice, very strong citrus mainly, and some rich, yet understated malt.
The taste was just phenomenal, so damn balanced and silky smooth. Some citrus and malty of course, but not too sweet or cloying, nor overly bitter. Very neutral, but very good.
Mouthfeel was smooth as silk.
Maybe the most drinkable barelywine I've ever had!

On tap for Barleywine long haul 2005 - Vintage 2003.
There were three samples, and of them, this was the most challenging to describe. so here goes.
The appearance is a very hazy orange high turbidity. Holding it to the light reveals some reds. There is very little if any head for most of the beer. Equally little lacing. Overall, it gives the appearance of a pressed cider.
The aroma is rather lazy and just whispers some spices though the mildness is a nice comfort. Nothing yet suggests that this is a strong barleywine.
The taste is somewhat enigmatic. Every flavor is restrained dancing but never declaring itself - even when well warmed. Through it come gentle pale malt flavors, delicate fruits tarts from the yeast and warming spices that never assert them well enough for clear identification. The overall smoothness and sensualness of the ale is astounding and puzzling. One would never believe drinking this that it was a strong ale as there is no alcoholic sensation.
What annoys me from a reviewers stand point is that this beer just will not give me any definitive. Everything is so gentle and alluring. HiroP is right though - its certainly another masterpiece from Walking Man.
