clear golden straw color topped with a frothy white head. head really just disappears and leaves little lace. light herbal hop nose with a bit of malt sweetness. steady carbonation, light to almost medium bodied. splash of grain and sweet malt flavor yield to an overwhelmingly herbal hop flavor. super dry from the hop bitterness, which is not always pleasant. rather easy drinking if you enjoy the flavors, which is arguable in my book.

the color of miller lite at 4.2% ABV, this beer just does not stack up to most any other IPA i've had, english style or not. drinkable if you can get past the overwhelming herbal hop flavor. not something i would seek out again.

What the flying "F" is this crap. First it is far from an IPA, more like a light ale. Pours a golden color with minimal head and marginal lacing.

Very sweet in the nose and taste. Ughhhh this is awful stuff. Not sure they put one bit of thought into this.

Notes: Avoid at all costs this is the sweetest onesided IPA I've ever had. No matter what style they choose for this its a grassy mess.

This one is a golden colored brew with a one inch white head.
The aroma is of hops and spice.
Its flavor is hopy, but by no means is this a hop bomb. The finish is semi bitter, though there is a definite malt presence throughout. There is a bit of caramel malt and bready flavor to it.
Mouth feel is light bodied and highly carbonated.

This straw coloured with very little head, so we're off to a bad start. The nose is yeasty. Beyond that I can't make much out.

Tastes a little yeasty and feels a little too watery, although there is some decent carbonation and a pleasant yet rather acrid hoppy finish. There is no sweetness here, and no reason to drink more than one even though with such low alcohol content it would be easy to knock a few back. Now I have five more to get rid of....

The Bert Grant's India Pale Ale pours from the stubby bottle a crisp golden orange color with a nice half inch of bubbly white head atop. Aromas of light crystalline malts combine with a combination of floral, brickweed grassy and spicy citrusy hop tones. A bit of candy sweetness appears as well. Just doesn't really work for me.

First sip brings a crisp crystal maltiness upfront with a glaze of caramel that peeks through. Mid palate is dominated by an amalgamation of grassy, herbal, citric hop flavors. A bit bready with a spiciness probably contributed by the hops as well. Clean, full bitterness on the way down that lingers slightly. Eh....

Mouthfeel is crisp and medium bodied with good carbonation. Fits the bill nicely. A fairly run of the mill brew here that I don't think I'd seek out again. I'm much more a fan of the American IPA style wise.

Michael Jackson once called this the hoppiest IPA in the U-S. That was an older book....I have no idea if it changed or the rest of the U.S. changed but this is one of the most mediocre IPA's I've had with little hop goodness.

It looks more like a Helles Lager in the glass..bright gold with just a little haziness...Nose is sweet...earthy in some ways...definitely more English style hops but the malt backing doesn't feel "English" to me....basically tastes like a poor Pale Ale...light bodied....semi-sweet with a slight earthy hop taste...

A big let down...Not recommended..but there are worse beers you can drink

Aroma: Intriguingly yeasty for an IPA. Bitter, but not as aggressively as I had expected. Decently malty.
Appearence: Medium golden or straw colored. Well carbonated. 1/2 inch head is white and efforvescent.
Taste: Bitter, as expected, from the nose. Afterwards, gets weak quickly into the body. Bittering hops hold strong, but body gives way quickly. Finishes bitter and weak. Mildly malty and a bit yeasty.
Aftertaste: Bitter and metalic. Dry with little lingering malt.
Impression: Impressed with the attemp at reproducing an original IPA, but have become accostomed to better IPAs.

Poured a clear yellow with a moderate head that stuck around for a while. Smelled of hops, low malt, a spicyness in the aroma, plus the obligatory citrus, not much else. First drink I could immediately taste the hops, but could not taste much of anything else. Subsequent drinks, I was able to begin tasting some sweet malt, even a little bit of an earthy, fruity flavor. Wasn't incredibly moved or impressed with this beer. IPA is my favorite style, but this just didn't do too much for me.

Clear yellow body with about a fingers worth of white foam. Dies quickly leaving no lace at all. Fairly weak smell of citric hoppiness. No malt in the smell just a light hop. Bitter grapefruit hops with a dash of caramel malt backing it. Some biscuity malts in there as well. Ends on a lightly hopped flavor. While the flavor and smell are not bad they are both WEAK! Even for an English style IPA this doesn’t have much life in it. Mouthfeel is a bit light while being crisp and clean. Ok drinkability here as there really isn’t nothing bad about it. Though the mildness would get boring rather quickly.

Bert Grant's IPA showed up with a yellow transparent colour. A foamy head rose up and deflated. This looks like a mass produced lager.

The smell threw yeast and modest hopping at my nose.

The taste was light. Not very bitter. Not much interesting happening here. What a disappointment. This is a supposed recreation of 19th century British IPA. All I can say is, if that is true those poor fellows were really missing out.

The mouthfeel and drinkability were just like your average Joe beers. The label says medium body, but I wouldn't go that far. This stuff is an average Joe beer. Highly disappointing.

I hate to be so harsh, but I am really unsatisfied with this one. Maybe the American IPA's have jaded me. This is just a confirmation that good beer is alive and well. I have a renewed appreciation for the truly above average brews after trying this one.

Edit: 05-11-05 I had a few of these in the early morning after work one day. They were much better than I had awarded them credit for initially. Not a huge amount of character, but this is a nice middle of the road stop. Goes really good with some pub pizza too. I do not feel like re-doing my whole review. Plus that is how I felt at the time, so I have to respect that. Bert's is alright though.

First tasted courtesy of a vendor sample. I was delivered two cases, each with slightly different packaging. One of them tastes older than the other. The fresh one nearly matches my original review, only the bitterness seems more overwhelming than I remember. Inconsistency, or is it in my head? Anyway, I'm changing the taste score from "5.0" to "4.5."
___

Unashamed, brassy blond wood-colored liquid.
Biscuity, bread crusts toasted with a dab of butter combine with forest and August prairie grass perfumes.
Outrageaously refreshing for an IPA!
This never signed-up for the North American race to sticky sweet, Vermouth-flavored IPA. A perfect sword-edge of bitter tannins characterize lemon and herbs flavors on the dry finish. Silk-textured. Bone dry. What's really fun is the polished, classical frame that supports the intense dryness. I love the pale color and lack of sticky sweetness. Try drinking it warm folks. I intend to buy lots and drink it all.

Only after drinking and grading this beer did I notice that it is intended to represent what ACTUAL India Pale Ale tasted like 100 years ago. Can anyone honestly think that British soldiers would have consumed what passes for IPA in this country today? Not likely! They would have drunk beer like this: a DRY, intensely bitter pale ale, that quenches one's thirst and demands to be followed one with another.

I'll be honest right off the bat, this stuff was awful. It's not even worthy of a decent rating. Pours a clear golden, urine-like color with nearly no head after a strong pour. Lacing is decent at best. Seriously, I thought it tasted gross. Definitely not an IPA in any sense of the style..it's a Pilsner, and a bad one at that. no hops really present at all, certainly not high enough alcohol, and no quality ingredients.

Somewhat drinkable because of it's light mouthfeel and the almost necessity of having to chug this stuff in order to get any sort of value out of it whatsoever. Poor offering by Grant's..
