This is the beer whose name kicked up a contention stir among libertarians and free market types because after being on the market since 1985, the old Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms in 1993 objected to the term "Spiced Ale." Not properly descriptive, not a real beer style, whatever. It was probably the first step in what would become the brewery's dissolution. So now a bottle arrives at the December Chicago Beer Society tasting of Christmas beers, date unknown. Okay, its smell and first taste impressions are very sweet, with overtones of clove, cardamon and a touch of cinnamon. The mouthfeel was by turns a little watery, then syrupy. Yet I thought the maltiness did a good job of holding up its end against the spices. Not much hop character beyond the basic bitterness.

This was a pale amber, slightly cloudy beer with no head. The lack of head was a disappointment, but I may have poured wrong.

The aroma was of light spices, cinnamon, clove, and a little sweetness.

The taste was of light cinnamon and ginger, in a mild malt matrix. Pretty good, and one that would be all right on a winter's night.
