330ml bottle in a hotel in Surabaya, at INR65,000 the cheapest on the menu. I had to check the label as I initially thought the waiter had brought me a non-alcoholic version. Very little to recommend here other than the fact it can be gulped down like water, taste not dissimilar to water in fact. Boasting the colour of weak tea and a rapidly diminishing foamy head, this drink entices the nose with very little at all. The tasting doesn’t disappoint, as the hope of any flavour is dashed by its soapy blandness. If you’ve been surfing all day this stuff is probably great, but I hadn’t, and it wasn’t.

Looks and feels like most standard, malty American lagers. Bland malt smell, head thins into a broken lace. Looks like apple juice or urine, tastes malty with a metallic-tinge and a slightly chemical, soapy aftertaste. In the part of Indonesia where I stayed, it was the most abundant and affordable alcoholic beverage, and was a decent thirst quencher. Avoid otherwise.

Decanted from a 11.2 oz (330 ml) can into a custom taster pint; best by 30 July 2019.
A: Pours a nearly clear, dark golden color with a less than one finger, briefly foamy white head, no serious retention, and little or no lacing.
S: Picked up a butyric acid aroma throughout. Hard to smell anything other than that.
T: Dry. Almost an apple flavor, very light malty and grainy with low bitterness.
M: Light bodied with very low carbonation. Drinks smoothly but slightly astringent.
O: Off aroma of butyric acid is pretty much a deal breaker. This was also not an old can, based on the best by dating, so no excuse. Basically, a very low end Pilsener. Might be my lowest rating ever.

It has been quite the exotic couple/few days for me! First, I had some Serbian & Armenian beer, thanks to @tone77 & now I am moving on to Indonesia, courtesy of one of my recent visits to The Beer & Beverage Shoppe on Roseville Road, off of the Fruitville Pike. It is getting to be like my travels & travails in the Navy!

From the CAN: "International Quality"; "Brewed with quality ingredients"; "For export ONLY".

Phew! Good thing that I purchased it outside of the country or who knows what sort of punishment might have befallen me! I happily Crack!ed open the vent & then beCAN an inverted Glug that resulted in two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, bone-white head with excellent retention. I then celebrated the lovely lacing that it left in its wake. Color was a beauteous Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5) with NE-quality clarity, summoning forth The Gelt Gang of Croesus, Mammon & Midas for a taste. Nose was a real corn-laden downer, full of a silage-like scent that now causes me to cringe & CANtemplate heading for the hills. 8=( Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was actually rather mild, still very much in the maize, but not as pronounced as in many beers in the style. It was the kind of thing that you might not mind drinking on a hot, humid day, but it was not making it for me in the face of the cold Winter chill. If it were not for its use of corn as an adjunct, it might have been fairly pleasant, given its light flavor. Finish was semi-sweet, about on par for the style. Ho hum. CANother day at CANQuest (tm) HQ.

660ml Bottle from Morrison's supermarket (£1.67):
This one is pretty much what I’d been expecting when I picked it up, it was an easy going and somewhat refreshing pale lager that could easily be described and basic and bland but definitely not offensive. It was easy to drink without much in the way of flavour showing, some lager malts and the odd grassy flavours were about it really but I won’t complain too much since the beer serves a purpose. I can’t imagine it will be a beer I’d pick up again unless I manage to visit Indonesia, and if I do then I’ll probably end up drinking it 24/7 over there; it’s also not the worse Asian beer I’ve tried which has to count for something.

Hey, you want complexity?....,Nah, when it comes to Bali, kick back, relax and let go of all your North american demands. nothing beats the heat like a cold one of these. clean, crisp, refreshing like a Heineken.
a simple choice for a simpler way of living.

American Adjunct seems to be popular in South-East Asia for some reason - and although beer lovers tend to criticize them for being poor, they do have a certain quality.
Imagine being somewhere in Indo-China during or after the monsoon with 100% humidity and tropical heat - there's nothing that quenches your thirst and cools you down than an ice cold American Adjunct!
No particular flavors, just a hoppy, light malty refreshing, easy to drink, light beer.
This is just like that, no outstanding features (couldn't tell the difference between a Chang, a Tiger or a Kingfisher perhaps) but does what it supposed to do quite well - quench thirst.

Okay. You're in Bali. Your other choices were Heineken or Tiger, so you went with the local beer.

It pours an unattractive straw, and seems a bit of the watered down side. It certainly doesn't smell like any hops you can recognize. But its hot, like really hot, and there's no shade in sight. Just you, on in an island paradise that doesn't really appreciate beer. You 'neck it' back like the Aussies you're surrounded by would do.

It tastes like a pre-made shandy, and you're not sure if the sugary sweetness is deliberate, or if its under attenuated... But strangely its the perfect thing for where you are. You go back stateside, but no one carries some random Indonesian beer... Even if every bottle is like a time capsule to island paradise.

Golden and carbonated. Fairly well hopped and with the adjuncts not making their presence too obvious. Light bodied and refreshing it goes very well with spicy food in a very hot environment.

L - clear, light yellow, no head at all

S - malty, lager yeast, similar to Bud, Miller, etc.

T - sweet, bland, very slight bitter grassy note from the hops, slightly woody aftertaste

F - thin yet oily? medium carbonation

O - seems to be the only form of alcohol available on Sunday because of government regulations, so it's got that going for it

My understanding is that Bintang is basically identical to Heineken.

It's good for traveling in Bali but probably wouldn't be good enough outside of Indonesia.

Light flavor all around. Hint of pilsner sweetness and a very subtle hop bitterness. Might just be my imagination. Highly fizzy.

Good for the sweltering heat of Bali afternoons. Won't get you buzzed unless you have at least four of them. Maybe that's a byproduct of the sweatiness i experience here.

The only other beer I've tried here is Bali Hai, and that strikes me as a miller high life clone.

Glad there's at least beer to drink on my vacation in a predominantly Hindu society.

Green glass bottle purchased at a restaurant in Bali for 22000 rupiah.

Pilsener. No ABV listed on the label.

Inoffensive insipid taste of pilsner malts. Very minor grassy hop presence. Not metallic nor watery. No off-flavours.

Kind of refreshing. Smooth, wet, light-bodied, overcarbonated.

Forgettable fare from the big guy brewery in Indonesia. Cheap for Indonesia, though, and preferable to competing lowest common denominator lagers brewed in the country.

High D+ / NOT RECOMMENDED

Big bottle the night after the review above (since there's barely fuck else to drink on the island). +/- 4.70% ABV.

Crisply overcarbonated, with an imbalanced sweet malty taste. All pils and pale malts. No grassy hop character.

Serviceable for pairing with Indonesian rice dishes, I guess.

High D+

07/24/16: Another big bottle since this is the cheapest most ubiquitous beer in eateries across Bali. Cost this time was 40000 IDR per large bottle at a touristy Western joint.

Yup, still lackluster. But it's inoffensive enough to pair with food when almost ice cold, even in spite of its many shortcomings.

We've all had worse. At least this isn't watery like many U.S. brewed budget pale lagers.

After my merry-go-round from Belgian Tripels, to handfuls of IPA/DIPAs from upstate NY to California, then German Weisse's and British Ale's, I found myself craving the standard. An idiot I hold close to my heart once told me: "Sometimes you just gotta have McDonalds, you know?"

How pretentious for me to say, and of course this is no Micky Ds, but for your basic adjunct lager/pilsner, this will do. I came across this easy-going gem on a trip to Bali, Indonesia, and was pleasantly surprised by how it filled exactly what I needed in that kind of humid, tropical weather; paired with local flavors, ofc (Babi guling!). Good fizz and fair amounts of malt. Very light beer that pours a lighter shade.

Format: a standard green 330mL bottle with a pretty ordinary macro label.

Appearance: pours out a pretty nasty yellow colour with a very thin white head that dissipates almost immediately.

Aroma: a very weak aroma of cheap grains and adjuncts with some florals or vegetal notes.

Taste: again very weak with cheap adjuncts. A nasty fug is evident -which turns out to be vegetal rather than the floral - however is still very light so doesn't impact too much.

Aftertaste: the flavours drop away pretty quickly per the style. Just a throw-down, cheap macro lager.

Mouth feel: quite light in body which comes across as watery. The carbonation somehow is chunky and yet makes the beer feel a bit flat.

Overall: an okay throw-back lager but that's about it. It has been designed for the hottest of hot weather where flavour is not as important as refreshment. You can still find better for under AU$40 a case though.

Pours a typical clear golden color, topped with an average white foamy head that immediately settles down.
The aroma is easily picked up, some malts and lots of grain.
The taste is sweet at first, slightly bland - lacks some bubbles. Balanced body with a tiny amount of bitterness in the finish.
Drinkable, but that's it.

330ml bottle poured into pint glass 18/3/14

A pale yellow with lots of big bubbles feeding a finger of foam that's gone in seconds and leaves several patches of random lace

S sweet grains, cardboard, floral hops are faint but there, not skunked but has a chemical thing going on that doesn't work that well, smells like a corona or something similar

T doesn't stray far from the smell, not overly offensive but not exactly pleasant to drink, tastes like cardboard

M thin and watery, bubbles foam it up and its flat in seconds, vegetal aftertaste leaves something to be desired

O not quite awful but undesirable, tastes like so many other crappy warm climate macro lagers I'd pass if given a second chance

I didn't buy this one because I thought it would be good I bought it for the country tic. One of those beers that you could drink on a hot beach if you had to but I'm not on a hot beach in Indo

Bottle at Pelangi, Amsterdam, Netherlands

A: The beer is crystal clear yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high head that has good retention properties and only died down a bit.
S: Light to moderate aromas of adjunct malts are present in the nose-corn stands out in particular.
T: Like the smell, the taste is a little sweet and has flavors of corn and adjunct malts along with a very slight amount of bitterness from the hops.
M: It feels light-bodied and a little smooth on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink but isn't very flavorful and seems a little bland.

Bottle of 330 ml, bought in the Netherlands where it's imported. ABV 4,7%. Ingredients are water, malts, sucrose, barley and hops.

Pours a golden yellow colour, with two fingers of soapy white head, good retention. No lacing left behind. Lots of activity in the glass.

My nose is a bit blocked, but I only get an aroma of your typical pilsner, meaning some light hops smell along with some malts
.
NIce crisp taste, refreshing, very light bitterness on the finish. Quite malty.I thou Nothing really exciting, but quite good nevertheless.

Medium thin body and average carbonation.

Overall not bad. Highly drinkable, although not really a pilsner but closer to a lager.
