500 ml bottle poured into a stein

a: pours a deep near black, one finger tan head, dissipates slowly

s: deep roasted malts, some bittersweet chocolate and cocoa

t: fairly bitter deep roasted malts, quite thin mouthfeel, feels closer to a dunkel lager rather than a bock, especially at 7% abv.

o: one of the better Hungarian beers, but a bit lacking on mouthfeel and depth to make much of a mark style-wise

This beer was on tap in the bar at the Kempinski Hotel in Budapest. I thought this was the best beer I had in that city. It poured real dark with a decent head. There was a nice malty nose, sort of like a doppel, and hoppier than some of the other beers there. This was not a sweet beer and got dryer as I went. Some in our party thought it had a fermented, soy sort of flavor but not unpleasant. Very nice finish as well. I really enjoyed this unexpected pleasure, particularly in August.

This is a solid bock. Pours syrupy, dark, root-beer color - not too much head though. Smells great - dark molasses. Tastes like bitter chocolate (hops seem to be strong in this bock), coffee, and sweet bread. As someone has noted, it has a definite porter character.

As it warms, the carbonation, or lack thereof, seems to detract. But overall, a very enjoyable bock from Hungary.

Mollasses, soy sauce and coffee, some raisiny plummy fruityness. Too sticky and sweet. One moment i think i really like bocks and then i have a bock like this, and then am not so sure. I mean, its not bad, theres some decent hits of flavour, but like i said, its a bit too sticky, and has a very upfront sweetnes, a bit one dimentional?

Dark brown color with beige head. Smells like dark malts and light roasted coffee. Taste follows with some roasty flavors, not too bitter but also no sweetness. Very balanced overall and easy drinkable. Not bad for a Hungarian macro lager.

Deep dark, almost black hungarian bock.
It's foam is like milky coffe, but last for only a short time.
Smell: nothing special, a usual bock, but a little bit sweeter, with a hint burnt sugar.
Taste: like it's smeel- sweet. Too sweet, for me. That makes it hard to drink, but some spicy flavors help to balance it.
After-taste lasts for a long time, and the bitterness of hop comes out(bisede the sweetness, of course).

This beer poured a long lasting creamy tan head with medium sized bubbles. There was good lacing on all sides of my glass. The nose was both chocolate and licorice. The body was black. This is one very smooth beer in my opinion and one that I truly enjoyed drinking.

A nice deep garnet color as it sets in my Leute Bok Glass, the head portly in size, frothy and light tan in color; the lace is a nice covering sheet. Nose is sweet caramel, lightly toasted grains, a bit plummish; decent as noses go, the start sweet and the top skimpy in feel, the finish pleasantly carbonated. The hops spicy in their bite, dry as a desert bone aftertaste, a nice if light “Bock”, drinkable and decent in its own right.

This beer is funny: it isn't like a bock - or at least it isn't similar to the kind of bocks (bock, double bock or festbock) that I tried in Austria. It is much more like an Imperial Stout or a Baltic porter with much viscosity, breadiness and malts and comes with 7.3 ABV, all good! I think it should only be revised if this is really supposed to be a real bock or if it is just the name.
Nevertheless, this is perhaps THE best commercial beer made in Hungary now! A good one indeed!

I had this on tap while doing my grocery shopping at Nagy Vasarcsarnok. Upstairs they have stalls of typical Hungarian folkfare/grub. Wasn't expecting much from a Hungarian brew since the Arany Aszok series are really nothing to brag about. So I casually ordered this to wash down my sausage and langos. Sniffed it, and instantly I detected a pronounced caramel, vanilla essence. Swirled to agitate more and the bak was definitely releasing scents of dark chocolate toasted coffee beans. The beer now had my attention (again, I wasn't expecting special anything beforehand). I raised the glass and took a look at it. Definitely coffee soil black, not too much head, little lacing. Gulped some beer down and boy, was I surprised. Tasted as good as it smelled. This would be good as a standalone dessert. Very full bodied. Mouthfeel was nice too. I'll order this again. Happily.

One word of advice: This beer is pretty strong. I had a half-pint to go with my meal and two hours later, I'm still feeling slightly buzzed. Made for a great shopping expedition. ;)

Whoa, this is a pretty meaty beer. Deep and dark colour with plenty of complexity. Not one to skol by any means. Sweet and roasted at the same time. Not to sure if I could manage a six-pack of these - but a couple of these with a large schnitzel would do the trick.

Very dark brown to black with a nice creamy solid brown head and nice constant carbonation. Sweet all dark malt aroma and flavor; hints of bittersweet chocolate. Very robust. Medium bodied and smooth with a rich mouthfeel.

A nice solid dark robust bock/dopplebock hybrid.

Pours very dark brown with somewhat average off-white head and no lacing. Also there was almost none of visible carbonation.

Very malty and roasty aroma with lots of dark fruit and a bit of alcohol. Taste is malty toffee, quite sweet with limited spicy bitterness. Aftertaste is long-lasting and is quite sweet, maybe even a bit too sweet.

Overall, an excellent bock, I enjoyed it a lot and will try to find it on-tap as well.

Reviewed from notes.

On-draught into a .5L glass in Budapest.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: ~4cm wide. Khaki colour. Nice creaminess and thickness. Good consistency. Soft and supple. Good complexion. Pretty good (6-7 minute) retention. Light inconsistent lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as it recedes.

BODY: Dark cola black. Opaque. No yeast or sediment is visible within.

Appears adequately carbonated. Not a unique or special appearance for the style, but generally appealing.

AROMA: Dark malts, cream, black malts, and faint herbal hops. So light in terms of intensity it's hard to identify anything. I detect no yeast character, alcohol, or off-notes. Hop aromatics are quite light and vague.

A pleasant albeit reticent aroma.

TASTE: Dark malts, cream, black malts, caramel, sassafras, herbal hop notes, rooty earthiness, and some mild malt sweetness.

I find no yeast character, overt alcohol, or off-flavours.

Simply built but cohesive. Not all that subtle, nuanced, or intricate, but it's passable. Average duration, depth, and intensity of flavour. I do like it for what it is.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, soft, creamy, a bit silky, medium-bodied, fairly thick, and decently carbonated. Suits the taste okay.

Not gushed, hot, oily, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.

OVERALL: Drinkable but largely unremarkable. It's nice for a mass-produced dark beer, and I'm glad this is a standard go-to in Hungary, but I wouldn't bother with it again, nor would I recommend it to friends. Very average.

Looks like dark syrup. Light brown dense head that held all the way down. Very malty and molasses on the nose. A rather messy mix of baker's chocolate, molasses, burned caramal, cashews, .. Every sip brought up another thought, it was too messy for me to like or place any finite characteristics on. No notable aftertaste, suprisingly thin for as thick as it looked, very lightly carbonated.

Had this recently on a trip to Budapest and reviewing from notes. Had on tap at an amazing bar in the Jewish Quarter.

Huge malt flavors with some toffee. Some butter in there as well. Cocoa or mocha - some sort of bitter chocolate. Creamy on the palate, yet drying in the finish. This is one of the best beers I've had on this trip so far.
