Poured into a tumbler, Kanon is clear gold with no head or lace, still looking.

Smell is light, sweet alcohol.

Taste is pretty neutral, with hot alcohol being the primary characteristic, with a rubbing alcohol finish.

Mouthfeel is dry, light, spicy.

Drinkability is low, all booze and no real taste otherwise.

30cl bottle. Clear amber with a very thin white head. Very sweet, with notes of malt sugar, boiled grains, bitter hops and alcohol.

A: Pilsnerlike with a short, banana milkshake consistency head.

S: The alcohol is quite apparent. Rubbery alcohol, with a hint of a sweet beer underneath.

T: Very sweet. It has this bizarre flavor of these Japanese candies I tried when young. Not good. There's also a definite cough syrup quality to the taste. Pretty gross.

M: The cough syrup feel of this really ruins it for me. It's almost like tasting alcohol for the first time and thinking "people really drink this stuff? this is how people get drunk?"

D: It's not. I had a few sips and had to toss it. Very disappointing.

This ridiculously strong beer pours a very thin head, about 1/8". The head is persistent, though. Its color is a lovely golden yellow with lots of fine bubbles rising along the glass. The smell is a sweet, overpowering alcoholic experience. The alcohol is very strong in the mouth, lingering long after swallowing. It has a bitter, almost pilsner-like taste. Originally sold in half-liter bottles it was brought back by popular demand, but now in the cowardly 30cl euro bottles. If you're not aware of the strength of this beer and you drink it too fast and then try to stand up you immediately will sit down. Hence "Kanon", the Cannon...

'Het kanon', the cannon ... I'm expecting an alcoholburn, as i'm sure it's meant to give a buzz.

Even though I knew of the poor reviews this beer got here, I still bought one bottle 30 cl to find out for myself.

First smell from the bottle seemed rather fresh hops. It pours into a clear darkgolden drink with decent carbonation, but a very poor head.
The smell and taste are hops, some citrus, decent malts, peppery, but these seem unable to escape from the very dominant alcoholburn.
Aftertaste is soapy, the mouthfeel is dry.
This could leave you with a headache after a few hours.

This grolsch is very obvious: giving a buzz with one small bottle.
I'm sure many people like this stuff because of that.
Cheers to them.

Not bad for a strong lager, very hard to find.

Visited Amsterdam; made a grocery store run and picked up a dozen random bottles. This was one, and I didn't even check the ABV until halfway through (shortly after thinking, "good lord, this is sweet").

It *is* sweet. Cloyingly sweet. And sharp. And malty, but otherwise bland and only slightly beery. Interesting, I guess, but no one's version of a great beer.

Picked up a 500ml can at Albert Heijn supermarket. A beer calling itself "Kanon" is not something I can resist.

I wish I had though.

Kanon pours like a lazy lager, slightly gloopy but bright and golden. Mildly carbonated, with a bit of white fluff pretending to be a head. Visually interchangeable with any other "superlager" (think Gordon's Finest Platinum and siblings).

The nose, while initially pleasantly fruity, quickly turns ugly: solvents and booze, with a bland undertow of dough-like malt. A bit chemical. Literally takes 2 seconds to lose all fragrance in the glass.

Flavour is booze, layered with booze, with hints of booze and a delicate touch of booze. Seriously: it's a mouth-numbingly boozy and altogether unpleasant monster of a beer. While there are plenty beers around with higher ABV, this is one of those beers which seems to be designed just to show off the booziness.

Overall, this beer does not seem to be designed for people who actually enjoy drinking beer. People who enjoy getting drunk possibly might like it, as it gets the job done quickly, if a little unpleasantly.

Poured from a 300 ml bottle. Minimal head that also dissapeared straight away. Colour is clean, dark yellow. Strong taste, expected from the high alcohol but other than that, nothing. Midly carbonated. it's okay if you have difficulties to go to sleep although you have already drunk a bunch of normal lagers.

Whoever thought this is a Marzen must have wasted it's tasting ability with all these imperial IPAs.

The beer pours a clear, dark golden color with a thin head and a medium amount of carbonation.

Smell is sweet malty with some straw notes and some alcohol notes. These notes are not heavy or anything.

Taste is Aaaah... alcohol, burning alcohol, the kind that burns a hole in your stomach. The sweetness of the malt is covering up some of the alcohol, but not enough to give the beer whiskey-like booziness. Other than the alcohol and sweet malt tastes, there is not much else going on. After 1 bottle I feel a big cannon stampeding through my head and I feel that this is a one time experience. Not bad, but alcohol is not the reason to drink beer.

Malt, very sweet, alcoholic smell, Appearance is golden, head is uneven and disappears with the speed of light. Taste is sweet/malt and strong alcoholic, the base is neutral. You need knife and fork to swallow. Further a strong alcoholic dry mouthfeel. Even in the aftertaste alcoholic.

This beer was original one of six (I think) beers to celebrate the 100 year birthday of the swingtop. The other beers were must better. But probably due to the Dutch pilsner culture this was the beer that had a great impact. Three of these and you need only a glass of water the morning-after to be intoxicated again. It reminds me of Eku 28, not taste wise, but more image wise, look what we can brew. No Grolsch, leave the high ABV beers for the microbrewers, they can make tasty ones, and stop brewing this. Try Grolsch Amber again!

We pour a glowing golden brew. It holds a one finger head of big tannish bubbles. This shows nice retention, leaving spots of lacing all around the glass. Carbonation appears highly active, and no sediment or haze is noted. The nose is sweet, with huge booze, and cloying synthetic strawberry sweetness. The malts are adjuncty and bitter, but lighten up with a pale toast around the edges. With warmth come light banana esters, but even these seem forced and fake. Our first impression is in regard to the surprising bitterness. As we sip, that same cloying sweetness from the nose comes in the form of dextrin sugars and concentrated berry syrups. Booze is apparent right off the bat, giving black pepper spice and lactic sourness. The middle peaks with fusel, fiery booze, decimating all flavoring besides the pale malt base. The malts enhance a bit towards the end, with more caramel sweetness and depth, and some of that toast from the nose begins to seep out. Otherwise, the booziness reigns king and continues through to the end. The aftertaste breathes bitterly of booze and stale adjuncty malts, under ripe bananas, and light caramel. The body is medium, and a bit on the syrupy side, while carbonation is higher. The bubbles prickle the tongue, and leave a big foam throughout the mouth. This initially coats, but eventually dries with astringency from all the massive booziness. There is okay slurp and smack with each sip. The abv is huge, and the beer drinks slowly for that reason.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the nose. While it seemed way overdone, muddy, and forced, some of the notes enlivened the nostrils. The flavoring suffered from being overly boozy, and you really had a hard time getting past that to find much of anything at all. Had they been willing to subdue that a bit more, it could have potentially been a much more curious, complex drink.
