First had on draft into pint tulip, at Meantime, The Old Brewery, Greenwich, London. None of Meantime's highly-regarded porters were available at the brewery. This superb "session stout" was a satisfactory stand-in.

500ml bottle served in a snifter glass.

A: Beautiful bottle art. Nice purple cap and label. Pours a deep black color forming a small beige head that dissipates quite quickly. Not much lacings but a small layer remains for a long time

S: Coffee! Delicious. roasted malts, dark chocolate, yeasts and... COFFEE! :)

T: Follows the nose. Roasted malts, dark chocolate. A mild sweet upfront and a bitter roasted end, and... COFFEEE!

M: Watery medium to low body. Mild sweet upfront and a delicious mild roasted bitter aftertaste

O: Very drinkable. Indicated to coffee lovers...

Drank from my Duvel Tulip.

A - Pours a dark ebony colour with a tight off white head that stays the distance.

S - The aroma is very plummy with a mild roasted note w/ slight coffee hint and mild tobacco scent

T - Plenty of coffee and Molassis here with a noice boozy kick at the finish

M - Smooth, low carbonation and full body.

D - A very good exampole of the style.

A - Poured into a pint glass a very dark brown with bright ruby red highlights when held up to light. An inch of dense beige head that slowly falls away.
S - Vanilla, slight chocolate and roasted maltiness. A vauge appley note...
T - Bitter sweet chocolate is the first obvious character, followed by some roasted bitterness and a very slight floral hop hint.
M - Medium bodied, pretty low carbonation, lingering roasty and chocolate taste.
D - Apart from the apple note in the smell this is a top drop. Quite a sessionable stout. Some fresh, plump oysters went down nicely while sipping this.

Dark brown, nearly black pour with just a tint of ruby. Two finger caramel-colored head with good retention and decent lacing. The nose has some solid roast with hints of cocoa, coffee, leather, and a touch of smoke. The taste follows suit with hints of coffee, dark chocolate, tobacco, cocoa, and smoke. Medium bodied with light carbonation but a bit thin for a stout. Overall, a solid English Stout, but nothing too special.

Sampled at the Cambridge Beer Festival 2008. Surprised this isn't in the directory yet, as someone commented that it was "great in the bottle" which means it's being served in at least two ways, and has likely been around for a while.

Appearance: not opaque (surprisingly), brown/cola in color, with a small head

Smell: overwhelming toffee/caramel notes, with some roast and vanilla underneath

Taste: heavy diacetyl, this one. my tasting note was "caramel and chocolate covered popcorn with a bit of vanilla"

Mouthfeel: medium body

Drinkability: average, not subtle at all which hurts drinkability when the flavors happen to be so intense

Pours very dark brown, almost black with lovely off-white head that slowly fades to a thin layer, no lacing. Aroma is dominated by roasted grain, some coffee.

Taste is roasted bitterness, charcoal, bits or dried plums, very dry finish and long lasting light roasted and bitter chocolate aftertaste. Mouthfeel feels thin, low carbonation.

Overall, although the beer seemed thin and boring in the beginning, it slowly grew and developed its unique flavour, but sadly there was only one bottle. Excellent session beer.

A: Deep brown with barely any head.

S: Strong smell of roasted malts and coffee.

T: Burnt coffee, malts, some dark fruit - fairly bitter with minimal sweetness.

M: A bit thin/ lacking in body, though the carbonation level is just right.

A fairly typical, unexciting stout - drinkable, but not one I'd particularly want to have again.

Reddish hue for a stout with minimal beige head. Nose is chocolate with a touch of fig. Quite spicy and somewhat fruity for a stout with relatively little bitterness. Not far off a scotch ale, but maybe slightly less sweet than that. Very pleasant.

From a 330ml bottle.

Look is very dark brown with a reddish tint when held to the light. Visible carbonation builds a two finger, off-white, fizzy head (audible pops & crackles) that recedes quickly.

Smells of coffee, cocoa, wood, and some spices.

Tastes of toasted malts, coffee, and a little bitter chocolate . Slightly bland.

Thin body verging on watery. Dry aftertaste. The level of bitterness is good. Moderate carbonation.

A traditional English stout. But sadly very light bodied and a touch gassy. Ordinary.

310ml glass at The Local Taphouse.

Pours a black that seems semi porous with the view and a reddish tinge around the edges. Has a quickly receding head of light mocha coloured foam.

Smell is of tobacco, brandy soaked dark fruits, some chocolate and coffee. A lot there, but it does seem a touch thin, as though there is a vacuum inside and.more should be there.

Taste is of dark chocolate, milk chocolate and a touch of dark fruit in the finish.

Mouthfeel has some solid English stickiness to it at the end. Doesn't have the thin feel that the nose leads you to believe is coming.

Overall a nice stout that has more to it than the ABV of 4.5% would have you believe. Prefer the tap version to the bottled version which was tasted about a year ago.
