Blend of "Hollandish" Oud Brouin {around 3.5% alc/vol} , "Dortmunder" lager bockbier {around 6.5% alc/vol} and the "primeval" beer. The "primal" beer has been aged in traditional wooden barrels. It introduces lactobacilli, Brettanomyces and other microflora into the very complex blend.

Squat little stoppered bottle, interesting label.

It's royal purplish red, an attractive deep colored brew. A purplish-grey head, finely carbonated but quick to exit, though it left lots of sticky clumps of lace.
The nose is tangy fruit and mildly malty, cherries come to mind, a vague whiff of grass.
The flavor has the expected tartness, malty, but with significant fruit, the sense of cranberries and a bit of lime. Then follows a mineral hoppy finish. It's light in the mouth, creamy and spritzy, very refreshing at first, but gets a bit sweet and syrupy as it warms up.
A nice red ale, but not a slam dunk.

On-tap at Brouwerij Lane, Brooklyn, NY

A: The beer is crystal clear but very dark garnet in color with no visible carbonation. It poured with a very thin beige head that eventually completely faded away, leaving only a thick ring of bubble around the edge of the glass.
S: There are light aromas of sweetness in the nose along with some hints of sourness.
T: The initial taste has a bit of initial sweetness along with flavors of black cherries—this is followed by some hints of sourness from the barrel aging towards the finish.
M: It feels light-bodied and quite smooth on the palate with a light to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very well balanced. It’s neither too sweet nor sour and is quite easy to drink compared to others in the style.

Lovely balance that falls toward fruit, but comes back with a dry grain finish that keeps this from ever being cloying. The sourness is controlled and does well to cut down what might be an otherwise large flavor of chocolate malt. Also a touch woody, but the body expresses no oak. I don't know if any was used, but it would benefit from some neutral to give this a little bigger mouthfeel. That said, it's refreshing: at once quenching and mouth-watering. Noble.

11.2 oz. swingtop bottle. Very dark brown burgandy color. Some hints of ruby around the edges, but mostly very dark. Thin white head disappears quickly. The nose is very wine-like. Grapes, oaky, other fruity smells. Very tart, acidic and sharp. The tartness drops off at the end. Dry, no bitterness. Medium body, very low carbonation. Some good flavors picked up from the oak. Very interesting beer. Not the most drinkable, but very good.

Pours a dark ruby color with a tan head that leaves decent lacing.

Smells of moderately tart raspberries backed by slightly sweet medium malts.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Slightly dry medium malts up front are joined quickly by tart raspberries and cherries and slight musty flavors. Midway through the flavor profile sweetens a bit, carrying through to a mildly tart finish. Mouthfeel is good, with active carbonation.

Overall this was one of the least-sweet Flanders Reds I’ve had in a while and it was certainly enjoyable. Worth a shot.

Served from tap into a Trappe Door tulip. Poured a deep yellow reddish brown with a half finger light tan head that remained throughout. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, raspberry, strawberry, sour, wood, and sugar. The flavor was of sweet malt, strawberry, raspberry, fruit, sugar, wood, and subtle tart. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a good brew. I went into this one not really knowing what to expect at all. What I found really wasn’t too bad. There was a huge amount of sweetness going on that made this one quite refreshing and easy to drink overall. This nice touch of tartness going on really helped this aspect as well to make it fairly well balanced. It would definitely be easy to drink quite a bit of this before realizing you had done so. Definitely worth trying if you get the chance.

On tap at Ashley's in Westland.

A: Somewhere between deep crimson red and maroon. 1 finger whit head.

S: Sour fruit and vinegar.

T: Different than the other sours I have tried due to the finish. Sour cherries with other fruit notes followed by a malty, sweet finish.

M: Medium carbonation and light to medium bodied.

O: A very good sour because of the finish. I would drink it again.

Great treat on draft at the Exton PA Drafting Room. Nice looking beer. Deep mahogany red with a light beige head that left scant but noticeable lacing. Smell is nice and funkified. Definately pick up the lactic sourness, but a distinct mustiness is present also that is also present as a flavor component. Something that I found ever so slightly amiss in this beer. Nice sweet component to the beer which balances the strong sourness, but that dirty kind of musty taste didn't sit right with me. I think I like a bit cleaner sourness in a Flander's Red. Perhaps it was just the rather strong sourness that makes me think its a bit musty. Decent mouthfeel. I wouldn't drink more than 2 or 3 of these, but all in all pretty good.

It came to me a ruddy but lively brown with glints of red in the bar lights. A thin film of off-white head dropped away to frothy swirls. Flits of lacing lay on the glass.

The aroma carried vinegary notes of ripe cherries and plums, backed by some sweet and sour dueling, as well as earthy tones of nuts and cocoa.

The first sip cascaded in cheek-sucking sour ripe cherry and a gone-over vinous twist. More overripe berries punch through, carrying sweetness to battle the sourness, but currents of chocolate and some nuttiness lead a decided funky barnyard stomp into the mix. The finish was quick, with a flash of pruny sweetness promptly bested by a shortly lingering dryness. The interplay is an interesting tide of crisp characters.

Medium bodied, it lays on the palate with a fruit juicy tart astringency the exercises the 'buds.

There be plenty of tart sassiness here, but it's simple to take it in stride as a comfy compliment to the flavor elements that come into play. It's utterly drinkable, quenching in its way, and alive in the mouth, sparkling and tinkling as it crosses over. It's got everything you'd expect in the style, and while it isn't incredible, it is memorable, and outright good, and that's a commendable achievement.

Appearance – 11.2 oz swingtop bottle from Luke's. Poured into a wine glass it is dark brown with red highlights when held up to the light. The thin off white head quickly falls back into the beer without leaving any lacing.

Smell – Cherries, funk, a bit of vinegar and sweet malt. Its solid, but not exemplary and the vinegar like aroma makes me worried.

Taste – The taste is much less sour than the smell indicated. It is tart, but well balanced with a sweet caramel/toffee maltiness. The cherry aroma carries through in the flavor nicely, making the beer taste a bit like cherry preserves. Hops and alcohol are basically non-existent.

Mouthfeel – A bit syrupy for the style with low carbonation. I would prefer a bit more carbonation to help lighten the body.

Drinkability & Notes – Not an overly complex sour red, but well balanced and easy to drink. An interesting varient of the Flanders Red, and if Wild Brews is correct soon to be gone.

Poured a reddish brown with minimal head and lacing on top of an aroma that I can only say is sweet, like caramel or just plain sugar, while also this wicked sourness and funk. Taste is more of the same as there's an underlying sweetness combo'd w/ tart fruits like cherry while this sour funk patch just keeps going. Easy to drink yet a sipper b/c it just keeps mixing it up and then finishes with a rather crisp, sour finish.

11.2 swing top bottle pours a deep clear reddish brown color with a nice creamy light brown head that leaves a sticky lacing in my glass. Fruity vinegar aromas, cherry, sour apple and vinegar flavors. Medium bodied with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel, finishes sour, very delicious.

Pours a deep reddish brown. Fingerwidth head that stays a while. Smell is of very tart cherries, a little woodsy character and malt. Taste is actually sweeter than the smell would have you guess. Still a tad sour in the middle, but the sweetness of the malt and cherries dominate. I like that this beer is a blend of a sour and a dortmunder; it works well.

Enjoyed on tap at Blue Monk. Very dark head with lots of lace and a quarter inch of retained head. Sour cherry and wood aroma. Medium bodied. A bit of vinegar in finish. Comes across most as a mellowed Flanders Red. Satisfying, very good drinkability.Wood taste is only nominal.

Slightly chilled 11.2oz. swing-top bottled served in a wine glass.

Pours a medium brown color with a touch of red. Quite highly carbonated. Interesting grey-brown head.

Smells of tart cherries and lime with faintly earthy and grassy aromas.

Tart cherry and lime flavors somewhat overpowering the more complex woody and earthy components; not particularly balanced. Very subtle vinegar flavor. Dry finish.

Good mouthfeel and quite easy to drink and quite refreshing.

Not my favorite Flanders Red Ale, but worth a try.

Poured a deep red,almost translucent maroon, with a short lived creamy white head that left sparse lacing on the glass.

The aroma is fruity ripe apples, plums with almost a cider vinegar like quality.

The taste is refreshingly sour, wow what a refreshing taste. This cleanses your palate and your sinuses. No lingering aftertaste to speak of. No heavy maltiness nor even a hint of hops.

Mouthfeel was good, light carbonation coupled with the sourness made for a well balanced sensory experience.

If it was not so pricey I coul make this a regular "after yardwork" beer.

Smells like a stinky sour cherry lambic, looks like a dark brown ale. The color of red-tinged bark with a miniscule but solid white head, left a good snail trail of lacing behind. A smooth chocolatey-malt taste of black cherries, sugar, caramel and overripe sour berries. Great light and silky mouthfeel, very drinkable beer. Free of aftertaste and very refreshing, we drank Spuyten dry of this stuff.

First, I must assume that I have the right brew, as I bought this in the US, therefore am going with the assumption that this is the US Non-Saccharin Version. Poured out to a dark red / amber color with a very nice head and good lace around the glass. Odors of sweet grapes and plumbs that have fermented. Very Nice. Flavors of sweet fruit and dark berries are most present, as is a slight sourness that lurks in the background. Also a slightly roasted quality was present, which added to the limited complexity of this beer. Finished smooth, with some bite toward the end, but just enough to get your attention and invite you back for another sip. This is a good sipping ale. Highly recommended. If you have never had a Flanders Red, this is a good place to start.

Almost opaque from the side, a deep, deep ruby under the light. A finger give or take of large-bubble offwhite head. Laces decently.

That signature tangy sour smell of a Flemish sour; more vinegar than citrus or anything. Sort of an apple cider vinegar nose.

Taste is remarkably rich, smooth, and balanced. The vinegary, kombucha-esque tartness, sure, but balanced by a ton of sweetness and some malt character that reminds you that in fact the lovely fermented beverage in front of you is beer. Grape tanginess overtones, especially on the finish. Remarkably sweet start, date-like or pruney. There's something very faintly vegetal here, but I can't put my finger on it. Possible rotkraut. The aftertaste is a bit sticky, so consider having with a glass of water. Magnificently complex for a style I had almost written off as one-dimensional.

Mouthfeel is good, a bit prickly, but nothing objectionable. Pretty average.

Overall, this is the best Flemish sour I've ever had. It has a complexity and balance that a lot of sours lack.

Enjoyed on-tap @ the iTap House in Chesterfield, MO for $7. Tapped from the Black, Square Tap Handle w/ Mestreechs Aajt written on it into a 13oz Stemmed Flute Glass.

Aroma- Very strong fruits and complexed ingredient list in here. Has a grape and good amount of sour aroma. Well balanced all around.

Appearance- Received with 1.5 finger head that has great retention. The body is a deep burgundy color with dark red tint behind it when you keep it up to a light. Good clarity in here and the lacing is fantastic and thick!

Flavor- Has the most interesting taste here. A grape juice flavor is the initial flavor and then the finish has some definite cola attributes behind it. Very sweet and the finish is dry. Well-balanced all around though.

Mouthfeel- Light Bodied, High Carbonation, Weaker finish for this cola flavor just stays on the palate all the way through.

Overall Impression- What a strange but good brew! With the grape and cola flavors, this one was shockingly different. A light amount of acidity is in here but for a Flanders Red, I'm sure its not too big of a problem. If you can, get around to enjoying this one! The reason I did was b/c John said they will never be getting this one again and that is was a very limited Sour.

Somehow this one doesn't seem to appear to have any carbonation. Turns out it is very light, but the dark deep ruby tones fail to make up for the lack of head or lacing. The nose is slight soysauce. No, cherry cough syrup. Woody with the faint nose of actual cherries. The aroma of them just sitting in your bowl as well as the medicinal flavor of cherries.

It begins with this intense sourness that just gives way completely to a cherry note that ends with the cherries almost leaving and no sourness or tartness. It is quite incredible that this happens as the sourness just kind of kicks you and runs away rather quickly. Getting used to this one is amazing. I love the way it comes down. I don't think there should have been huge bubbly carbonation, but the slight carbonation is less than amazing. Good beer, though. Maybe some more tartness and some more carbonation next time.

Dark mahogany, with crimson highlights, a sotted cocoa-grey/brown head that adjusts to a slim ring.
Sour cherries in the aroma, rich and beautiful, sort of like Paris Hilton, but not hardly as shallow and insipid...lovely and complex, more like Audrey Hepburn.
Sourness hits the lips, at first, tartness, followed by caramel, sugary for a second, then sour again, a hint of mollasses, then a reprise of cherries, and berries.
Very nice flavor, medium bodied, with a lingering, slightly sour finish.
Gets bolder with the bracing, puckering sour halfway in,...this shows no sign of flagging in the flavor department. Feels even thicker in the mouth, too.
this is exceptional stuff, really. I had no idea what to expect until I opened it. Very nice Flanders red, out of Holland.

Served on tap at Brouwerij Lane in Brooklyn, NY

A: Pours a crystal clear very dark amber in color with hint of garnet red when held up to the light and light amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a half finger tall creamy dark beige head that reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer with a thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Lightly sour/tart with notes of vinegar, sweetness, and cherry.

T: The beer starts out with light to moderate flavors of sweetness and black cherries before the flavors of the wood from the aging process become apparent. The beer finishes with light to moderate amounts of tartness/sourness and some very light vinous/vinegar hints.

M: Slightly heavier than light bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth.

O: This beer is very well balanced between the sweet and sour/tart flavors. Easy to drink and very enjoyable. I would be happy to sip on this beer all afternoon.

The Meestrech's Aajt is an impressive example of the Flander's red style. This version is unsweetened, and I assume their European version is more like the Duchess de Borugone.

It pours a reddish-chestnut brown beneath a short lid of creamy tan foam that drops shortly to a standard collar with just some spider-web surface covering (which is common for the style). It does, however, leave some nice splashes and spots of lace about the goblet.

The nose is grape and cherry-like, with some earthy character (muddy barnyard), and some mild acetone. It's medium-light bodied and gently effervescent. The flavor is a bit more intense than the nose suggests, and includes a wider range of fruit (some plum), more tartness over some sweet caramelish maltiness. The bitterness is limited, as it should be, and the tart character over-rides its sweetness to become acidic and dry in the finish.

Refreshing and exciting!

On-tap 10/2/11 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub in Pawtucket, RI, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark reddish brown color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains light caramelized malts, lager yeast, some hops and some citrus.

T: The taste starts out with an interesting combination of dark fruit flavors that are both sweet and tart. Then some mild Belgian yeast and a hearty but not too heavy malt character come in. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean and dry.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, very mild kick, good representation of style, this is a nice mild and complex beer to drink for a while.
