Bottle shared by Radek, best before June 2012. Served in a snifter.

Poured a deep dark burgundy, with a light brown head; only a moderate tan collar is retained with a bit of lace. Nose is grapey/vinous, dark malts, some saltiness and sweeter notes as well. Taste is a turn for the worse. Salty as heck right off the bat (brewed with saltwater or something?) as well and some sourness which comes through. More sour grapes and acidic wine notes, chocolate and a weird hint of tropical fruit flesh. What the hell. A genuinely weird beer, most definitely not an English porter - most defintely not anything really, a sour/wild variation of the style perchance? We struggled to determine if this was the brewers intention to create this or a product of bottling, but this was just too off-center for my liking.

375 ml bottle with freshness date March 2012, into tulip. Pours murky, rusty dark-brown body topped by mid-sized light tan head that gradually retreats. Red wine & cherry-pie aroma of Brettanomyces with faint sweetness underneath and some spicy alcohol.

The flavor is very vinous with prominent tart-berry acidity and salty sharpness that act in synergy with each other thus the beer seems much saltier than its Saphir brother brewed with salt and without Brett. Brettanomyces strain has consumed much of the remaining complex sugars thus providing rather high carbonation and palate-cleansing, dry finish with bitter mushroom aftertaste typical of a Brett. This is a good, vivid beer but not something that I actually see as a porter as any eventual roasted notes and non-roasted malt flavors such as caramel, nuts or toffee are entirely masked by Brett-derived tartness and salt.

From a bottle into a snifter
Bottled Feb 2012
Best before Feb 2012 (not a typo)

APPEARANCE: A clear brown pour yiels a small, looser looking, light tan head with lousy retention. Pour is thin and watery. Head quickly fades to a swirly wisp and ring. Sienna brown body with no carbonation evident. A ring and swirly wisp remain leacing dots of lacing down the glass. Too thin and watery to be even average.

SMELL: Dark malts, dark fruits, raisins and grapes, plumbs and some tart cherries. A touch of cocoa as well. This is relativey mild, and a little more fruity and tart than expected. Might be infected, but it's still got some potential.

TASTE: Undrinkable. Sour, tart cherries and vinegar everywhere. Old and expired lettuce as well. Horrible. It's sour, and the sour is not an enjoyable sour. Lots of vingear, tart cherries and expired vegetables after the swallow. Some infections work, but it's the old brussel sprouts that ruin this one. Terrible.

PALATE: Thin body and quite watery. Mild carbonation, goes down watery and finishes quite dry. A little puckering, and some acidic notes linger on the palate.

OVERALL: Horrible. Infections are always a lousy deal, but this one couldn't even save face as a sour porter. Too bad this wasn't a 33cl Eszett Gueuze. I'll try a future batch of this one, but take this as a warning for the current batch. Nasty.

On draft at Max's in Baltimore.

The beer is near black with an inch of creamy, sand colored head. The aroma offers ripened dark fruits (plums, figs, raisins), half and half, sourdough bread perhaps. There is definitely a sour component to this beer. While unorthodox, I don't find it off putting, per se. It seems as though my serving is a better sample than those of other reviewers. Decent, though one glass is plenty. Interesting and worth a try.

Deep black colour, slight brown in the light, light off white head. Smell is of lots of roasted malt, toasted, coffee and chocolate, light alcohol as well. Taste is very wine like and quite sour, notes of table salt are present as well, roasted malt, wild yeast like character, leather. Light carb, medium feel, average body. Not bad overall, quite different, I dont know what style this would fall in, sort of all over the place but still enjoyable. Thanks Radek.
