Tyler at Barley Brown's hooked this up so I could share it with the Boise Geeks.... I think this was the hit of the night, in a night littered with good Black IPA's.

Pours pitch black.. nice tan head with good lacing and retention.

The nose screams grapefruit... very pithy hoppiness... light cocoa and hints of malt sweetness seem just enough to balance.

Flavor mirrors the nose ... great complexities .. everything is nearly perfect and in balance... slight caramel sweetness brings out the big roastiness ... the malts help carry tons of oily citric hops.. the finish is long and lingering.. bits of coffee and maltiness with a grapefruit rind hoppiness that never verges on bitter.... just nice hop flavors... very good.

Body is medium with a good carbonation that helps everything jump up and out of the glass... Impressive.

On tap at Barley Brown's, Baker City OR, 8.25.11.

Dark brown nearly black color, opaque, no visible highlights when held up to incandescent light, a real dark beer. 1/4 finger light tan head, pretty quick dissipation resulting in thin ring around edge of glass. Big hop attack in the nose, fruity, grapefruit pith, good citrus notes, some light roasted malt, some pine notes. Taste is pretty interesting, fruity then a wee bit of roast, leading up to a pine forest finish that isn't real bitter. Mouthfeel is well on the full side of medium, minimal effervescence.

This is the Barley Brown's GABF Pro-Am entry for 2011 in collaboration with award winning homebrewer Jason Spriet, certainly a homage to BB's Turmoil. Awesome is a bit fruitier and quite nicely balanced. Even at this ABV, pretty drinkable. A very ,very nice CDA, worth a trip to Baker City for fans of the style.

On tap at Belmont Station on Portland. Actually one of the better beers I've had during my week in Oregon. I arrived just a bit too late to get their Tankslapper but this did me OK.

Color is dark, almost too dark and scary, which is the worst quality.

Aroma is heavenly, very earthy floral and citrus. Has that great syrupy DIPA smell I enjoy.

Taste smooth and very nice pine flavors but just a bit to bitter on the finish.

I would drink again but not too much of this. 8% is not too bad but there is other beer I need to try! Not sticking with this tonight.
