330 ml, long neck brown bottle, ABV 6,5%, at home, poured into a snifter.
Pours a very dark brown coloured beer, with a good two finger beige, creamy head, with average retention.
Aroma of roasted malts, coffee and on the background slight caramel and alcohol.
Taste is sweet at first, giving its place to a light pleasant bitterness. Roasted malts and dark chocolate.
Medium to full body, light carbonation.
A very tasty bock.

22 Oct 2012 in Valkenburg, Holland: Cafe De Grendelpoort is having a Bockfest and this was one of the brews on-tap.

Very dark, most likely the darkest Bok I saw during my stay in Holland. The head was also the whitest I saw on a Bok this time around.

The aroma and taste were of roasted but not burnt malts with red berry notes in both the smell and mouth flavours. Coffee, prunes and plums can be added to the taste thoughts as this is a complex and interesting beer.

Medium bodied and easy to drink: pity there were so mant to try, or I could have stayed on this for another one or three!

Poured a 1" head which dissipated quickly. Clear burnt umber brown in color. Smell and taste both are mildly chocolate malt, and it's followed up by a pleasant long acidic zing. Really a pretty nice Bock. What was most notable of all was the massive amount of sediment in the bottom of the bottle (must have been at least 1/4" solid thick sediment and it came out during the pour as big globs). It didn't bother me, I've just never seen so much in a bottle.

A; nice brown color no head

S:chocolate and malts

T: chocolate,rosted malt, and a hint of larier with a nice hint of bitter.

M: the malt is sticking in your mouth some chocolate also in the aftertaste.

O; good beer nice winter beer light chilled its becoming better.

A: Pours very dark amber with large chunks of yeast. The head is thick and tan, and laced with yeast, resembling oatmeal.

S: Plums, prunes, raisins, along with just a hint of yeast. Very estery.

T: Surprisingly sour. I don't know whether this is because of the wheat, or if the bottle is old. (I'd be curious to try this fresh in the Netherlands.) The rye and wheat lighten the taste considerably. The start is very dry, followed by a sour center, and a dry finish. The oats contribute a slight astringency, but it's not powerful. There is also a hint of salt I'm picking up.

M: Much lighter than a traditional bock. There's a bit of warmth, but the overall feel is much more summery than a regular bock. Christmas in July?

D: The watery sourness drives down the drinkability of Jopen Bokbier. The bottle conditioning is generally a good thing, but the huge clumps of yeast actually detract from the experience (see hefeweizen or Cooper's Sparkling Ale for a better yeast-in-the-glass example).

Rich mahogany with tons of sediment. That's right, a bottle conditioned bock with yeast floaties all over the place. Small, light tan head gives way to a steady stream of bubbles. Wow, the nose is amazing. Intense caramel and dark malt sweetness with vanilla in tow.

A blast of dark fruit (not plum, not raisin, but something elusive) in front, closely followed by a beautiful melding of vanilla and slightly roasted coffee-like malt. The underlying sweetness brings honey to mind. No hop flavor, but just enough bitterness to prevent the beer from being cloying.

Jopen Bokbier is medium-bodied with medium-high carbonation for the style. Alcohol is totally masked by the heavy caramel flavor. This beer has more flavor than most doppelbocks I've had, and I would drink this regularly if I could. This has easily become my favorite bock in one beer's time.

Second price winner is "some" bock tasting event.

A: Drak brown almost black color with a one finger light brown head.

S: Roasted malts, toasted bread, dark fruits, caramel and light alcohols.

T: Burned malts, hints of dark chocolate, coffee and even liquorice. Perfectly dosed on the sugars.

M: Medium carbonation and a medium body. Dry finish.

D: An extraordinairy bockbeer. Has some Oatmeal Stout character in it. Very drinkable.

Bought this beer at the Bierkoning in Amsterdam. This beer is brewed with Malted barley, Wheat, Oats and Rye. Nice! Poured into a Westvleteren glass. The beer pours a hazy dark-brown color with almost no head, and some messy lacing. Contrary to some other users, I didn't experience any problems with yeast sediment in my glass.

Smell: Not too strong for a bockbeer. Some candy, bit caramel, roasted grains, spicy hops but also (or mainly) very fresh (green apples)

Taste: Quite different than the smell suggests. Roasted coffee, dark chocolate, lot of grains, not fresh at all. As mentioned by Absumaster, there is some not sweet caramel taste in this beer. Also I taste some very will hidden saltyness. The aftertaste is bitter and a bit dry

Mouthfeel: thick for the style, high carbonation that stimulates the tongue.

Overall: as mentioned by other reviewers as well, this is not a typical German Bockbeer (more ale like..). But man, is this good or what!!

30cL bottle purchased at Knightly Spirits, Orlando, FL

Aroma: scents of caramel malt, brown sugars, small hints of coffe and a bit of alcohol

Appearance: a murky concoction, a deep amber body with a thin off-white head. Virtually no head retention and zero lacing, this beer is merely ok to look at. Lots of yeasty floaties in the final pour, chances are this was bottled several years ago.

Taste: the taste is solid - the caramel malts bring out one of my favorite tastes, but with some hopiness that Belgians would forget. Fortunately for me, the coffee influence on taste is subtle at best. Really a good idea - German style, Belgian influence, but brewed in Holland.

Feel: medium feel all the way - not much carbonation

Drinkability: very easy and smooth to drink, and the fair 6.5% doesn't put you to sleep. I'd have another.

Not a prime example of bock bier, but still a good beer period.

Pours a very dark ruby with white chunks of sediment floating around. I guess I poured a bit too much. Nose is kind of musty with a malt tone to it and just a very slight touch of wood. Robust but mild aged dark fruit skins there as well. Flavor is a nice hearty malt with a touch of dark sugar. A little bit of wood. Feel is nice. High carbonation hitting the tongue. Thick liquid feel for sure. Overall this is an unusual bock. At least in comparison to the more traditional styles. I like it, as it is well made. It just isn't your typical example of the style.

Poured from a 30cl bottle ($3.00 in Detroit) into a pint glass. The appearance is murky brown, tons of large yeastie floaters, 3-finger foam which loses 2 fingers after about a minute. The aroma is bocky, sweet and malty but with a bit of a sour acidic edge to it (almost metallic). The taste is very good, with all the flavors promised from the aroma. Nicely drinkable, but not really worth the price when you can get better versions imported from Germany for cheaper prices.

Bronze-ish brown with a decent beige head and nice active carbonation. Toffee, light chocolate, and a bit of roastiness in the nose. Very similar flavors. Medium-light bodied due to airy carbonation with a bit of roastiness on the finish.

More of a Robust Brown Ale considering it's brewed with an Ale yeast... but nice enough.

A dark, murky color with a head that pours tall but falls fast. Aromas of dried fruit and sweet plums. First taste was a little astringent, but warmed quickly in the mouth and left nice dried cherry and peach aspects. Overall finish was kind of nutty and kind of resinous. Was a decent bok style, but a little dry in the finish.

This beer pours a muddy brown color with a small head.

Smell of hard candy, blueberries and a slight caramellic taste. Some green apples and overall fresh.

Taste is not what the smell promised, lots of coffee and burned, maltbitter tastes. Some caramel, but not the sweetness. There is some bitterness, but in the back. Body is medium and somewhat sticky. The oats in the beer are not very pronounced, but once I found out they were in there, I could taste an 'oilyness'.
Not the best of beers of Jopen, and for sure not a typical Dutch Bockbeer, but a good beer nevertheless.

Selection of the Beer-of-the-Month Club.
Poured a hazy beep brown color with Moderate tannish head. Attractive lacing.
Smell is rich and caramel-like. Nice dark fruit essences also noted.
Absolutely great mouthfeel. Nice, rich, and creamy.
Great drinkability. Very enjoyable beer.

A - Brownish color, hazy with yeast. Big fluffy tan head.

S - Malty, yeasty, with fruit aromas and a sour note.

T - Green apple, a hint of hops, malt, caramel sweetness.

M - Medium body, dry and clean, slightly astringent.

D - Not bad...I wouldn't seek it out, but not a bad beer by any stretch.

A lot of people who reviewed this talked about the excessive yeast sediment. I did not find this to be a problem at all: the beer is cloudy, but certainly no sediment. pours with a brilliant white head into my caracole snifter. cloudy oak brown. great lacing and a thin layer of head remains throughout the session.

Couldn't really pull much out of the nose. Mild for a bock - didnt overpower me with those roasted malts i come to expect. Buttery taste with no hop character. bit of a green apple flavor - i want to say it is a bit farmhouse-like. definitely some rustic flavors. a little sweet with some spiciness.

Fairly effervescent and dry. coasts your mouth but quickly goes away. Drinkability is good, but for some reason it isn't really an all-day kind of beer.

oh well, on to my cellar for more great thanksgiving beers.
