Notes: Collaboration with Brouwerij De Molen

Sin & Remorse is a 4-grain Imperial Stout brewed by Brewery de Molen and Jopen. A multi-grain beer with 38% rye, 24% oats and a touch of wheat. Traditional English Brown Malt tends to add strong coffee and chocolate tones. The result: a beer with full body (De Molen) along with loads of grain (Jopen). A beautiful combination of flavors!

Very nice imperial stout - my first beer from this brewery. “Best before Aug 2039” printed on bottle - a little strange. Pours a thicket very dark brown, almost black color with some fluffy mocha head and small rings of lacing that slowly faded. Smells of medium roast coffee, milk chocolate, malt, caramel, a little vanilla, light nuts and brown sugar. Taste follows the nose, fairly well balanced and a little more malt and caramel and less coffee than the American-made imperial stouts I’m more familiar with. Smooth, slightly sticky mouthfeel, not quite as thick and syrupy as I was expecting. Just the right amount of carbonation. A nice beer and one that I was happy to try.

From the back label: "Bottle date: 20 SEP 2016 12:56 20116 L16299/15"

Appearance: The body is black and it has a large creamy textured khaki head with a combination of large and small bubbles. Very good head retention.

Aroma: It smells like toffee and alcohol.

Taste: It has a nice burnt sugar flavor where there is a bit of burnt caramel, some extra sweetness, and some carbon at the edge. There is some prune flavor along with a bit of anise character.

Mouthfeel: It is very smooth. There is a silky quality to the beer which is outstanding. It is full bodied and it finishes very clean.

Overall: It is a very flavorful stout with a ton of character. It is not your standard stout, but one that has a bit of what might be considered "Belgian quality" to it. It is a bit reminiscent of plum dumplings. I would recommend it and I would drink it again.

A - Opaque black with a sticky medium toffee colored lacing ring.

S - Some light smokiness and char with creme and roasted dark chocolate.

T - Dark bakers chocolate, cream, some alcohol presence, some cherry but with some alcohol booziness. Finishes sweet, dry, and boozy.

M - Rich and full bodied, slick, lip smacking sticky, dry finish.

O - This is an excellent collab, recommended.

Best served at 51+°.
Poured a dark opaque chocolate color with a 2F head in a Stone Snifter.

Aroma: roasted malt, chocolate, cocoa nibs.

Taste: like the aroma with added intensity to the roasted malt, and finished with a light bitterness.

MF: very malt forward for the style.

Overall: excellent IS. The European approach is different than the American IS: more malt forward and a fuller body. Light bitterness. More roasted malt. I especially enjoyed beers from De Dolle. This is my first beer from Jopen.
Excellent beer check it out.

This one pours a fairly dark black, with a small head, and not much in the way of lacing.

This smells really, really strongly of roasty and caramelly coffee- and I don't think there's coffee added. It's so strongly coffee-forward, aroma-wise, it's crazy, with rich dark chocolate and light smoke as well.

This is great, and just gets so much flavor out there without any adjuncts- it's pretty impressive. There's a lot of rich, sweet creamy coffee- caramel, vanilla, and chocolate, with a heavy ashy roast character, and a light bit of smoke. This is super bold and quite well done.

This is pretty thick and chewy, with a good level of carbonation for the style- which means low but supportive.

This is my first beer from Jopen, so I wasn't sure how it would be. But knowing they were collaborating on a big stout with De Molen- I had an idea this would be great.

A: The beer is essentially jet black in color and only has traces of dark brown near the edges of the glass. It poured with a short tan head that left a narrow collar around the edge of the glass and some wisps of bubbles on the surface.
S: The smell has moderate aromas of chocolate malts along with hints of coffee beans.
T: The taste is dominated by flavors of chocolate malts and has hints of spices from the rye.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I thought that this beer would be heavier in body but it wasn't and as a result was rather easy to drink, especially since the alcohol was well hidden.
