Originally reviewed on August 20, 2006. On tap at the brewpub. Below the name of this beer on the plaque with its’ name, it says (Guinness Style). Yeah. Here I was, pleased by the fine example of a Blonde Ale I’d just enjoyed. And then this beer. Thin pale brown, with orange fringes. This is a stout? It looks like a weak ass brown ale. A greasy schmalz of gray head. Aroma of lightly honey dusted warm old Hersheys bars. Coarse. Absolutely no carbonation. At all. Boo. Light roasted caramel, with edges of burnt toast, crappy stale American chocolate and maybe a few grains of Sanka that came from a jar under the sink fo my old house, where it was kept with the cleaning supplies since my parents bought the house in 1986. Then, this incredibly artifical sugary glow, like fake raspberrys, only metallic and in a chocolate or nutty tone. Parts with a passing thought of hops. This beer really couldn’t get much worse for the style.

A - Looked like a stout and poured like a stout. Mediocre head and little lacing.

S - Very little smell to this at all. No nose on this beer even as it warmed.

T - The taste was bland and very subtle. I expected there to be some normal coffee or chocolate notes, but there just wasn't much complexity in this beer. There was an expected roasted barley/malt taste but nothing really stood out with this.

M - The mouthfeel was on par with a stout. It coated the palate fine and had very little carbonation.

D - I don't drink many stouts, but I do understand what it takes to make a good one. I will never have another. This is a very sub-par beer that is mediocre at best.

A-Deep,dark brown with dark hazel edges. A thin, light tan head graces the body and leaves spotty lace.

S-Light roasted malt aroma, a touch of coffee and not much else.

T-A lot more flavour than expected, especially considering the rather unexciting aroma. Good roasted malt body and pleasant coffee bitterness in the finish. Even a touch of licorice sneaks in to surprise your palate.

M-Thin for a stout and more like a hearty brown. Medium-light body is helped along by the surprisingly good lingering roasted bitterness.

D-Not bad and hey, we can't scare the tourists with a REAL stout! The pleasantly surprising roasted flavour helps this one from falling flat!

Had on tap as part of a flight. Pour is dark and opaque, with a thick ring of creamy head with good retention. Subtle aromas of roasted coffee, some bitter chocolate notes. Taste follows, standard stout aroma and taste. Enjoyable.

I tasted this beer at the brew pub itself within the State Park. The pub is dimly lit, but depite the lighting, this dark brew still had some translucence. Coffee fills the nose, but also lemon and some sweet berry. Upon taking a drink, the first thing to hit is the expected coffee, which rather quickly melts away to a strong lemon with notes of under-ripe raspberry. The sour finish caused my mouth to pucker as if I had just sucked on a lemon. Once again the setting probably saves this beer, as the beauty of the park seems to distract me from some of the flaws of this overly tart offering.
