Presentation: After a few beers at the excellent Shepherds Rest and The Works it was time to revisit a timeless favorite, The Puzzle Hall Inn. Five Cask Ales on offer but I pitched for the Goose Eye Special, listed on the back Blackboard at 4.2% ABV and a whopping £2.35 Pint, bloody good job it wasn’t my round!!!

Appearance: Copper body with a clear light brown hue and an off-white creamy head. Dispensed via a Homark coupled to a sparkler the head retention was solid at first but soon dispersed and broke half way down the Pint.

Nose: Soggy malts with a freshly wiped ashtray and cigarette butts soaked into a horseshit dollop. Erm, yeah, doesn’t smell good this one.

Taste: Malty start with a dry grainy middle. The finish is also dry and scorched with a parched ashtray dimension that scatters sand and filly busters until you realize that it is nothing special at all. Tasted like home brew.

Mouthfeel: The Cask Ale body rescued this brew, rather than the beer itself. Soft and easy gong but very thin with a shocking dry grainy body.

Drinkability: Fair dinkum and a rushty brew, but nowt worth a wombat’s gonad.

Overall: £2.35 for a Pint, Timothy Taylor’s Landlord was the same price and Young’s Bitter was only £2.05 for a Pint. Guess I was robbed. Much better beers for the same coin.

Goose Eye Special, well, it isn’t. Should be called Goose Eye Below Standard.
