Very dark brown , with moderate , quickly-dissipating tan head.

Smells of black coffee, cocoa, roasty malt, slight woody char, and something faintly sweet.

Flavor is that of a cup of coffee, with a brownie that's topped with a dab of maple cream. It's much less sweet than a brownie , though. About the right amount, in my estimation. No danger whatsoever of it being described as "cloying" . Finishes with a light touch of dark-chocolate bitterness, that balances the sweetness.

Feel is moderately oily, with light, very fine carbonation. Just enough to let you know it's beer, not a liqueur , and that it's not flat.

Overall, very enjoyable. The aroma , when opening the can, and pouring , is quite strong. I was expecting a somewhat overpowering, coffee-forward beer. But no...…. imbibing shows a very well-balanced brew. They seem to have hit the mark that they were aiming for. As with their other big stouts and porters, this avoids the pitfall of being too sweet. Well done! If there is any fault with it, (& this is nitpicking) I wish it had a bit more carbonation, and creamy feel. I'd like to see a version with oats in it. In the meantime, this is quite good as-is.

25 July 2020 - Beer #151

Corona Day #135

Price: $8.49 at Milk & Hops Ramen Bar in Manhattan

Appearance: 5 - all Bock with a pleasant, frothy, tan head.

Nose: 4 - coffee stout, no maple.

Taste: 5 - man, this is a PERFECT breakfast stout. The coffee, maple, and stout are blended to perfection.

Mouth: 5 - among the smoothest beers I've ever had. The bubbles are so tiny they're almost not there, except they are.

Overall: 5 - these guys are sneaky good. Now I'm even more upset that the barrel aged version sold out right before I got there.

Stay safe out there, my friends.

Cheers!
